Actually, the vast majority advised me to do a clean install. Also, while reading other threads here on the subject, I found quite a few people suggesting clean installs, and seemed to notice more complaints from upgraders than clean installers (could have simply been the threads I chose to read.)

I solicited answers from sources other than this board as well.

It turned out to be the right decision. I reclaimed wasted space, and was up and running in about 90 minutes total.

As I said before, thanks for the help as well as the helpful and friendly attitude. It's much appreciated.

Just for the record, only one person in this thread actually recommended the clean install. Many others questioned the need for it and suggested either an upgrade or an archive and install.

I'm glad it worked out for you. This issue always generates a lively debate, which has never resulted in any consensus.

Only one person in this thread, yes, but the overwhelming response including the other sources was for a clean install. That doesn't mean it was the right choice, or that is "the" way to go.

Debate is a good thing. I find it allows you insight to others' thoughts and reasoning.

It did work out well, and I must say... the Apple hardware beats any I've used within the same price point over the past many years.

I was compelled to register after reading this thread. Seriously, I have done 2 leopard upgrades which is a 45min job both times. If you really care to spend hours doing this then do the erase and install option, otherwise just do the upgrade and either way back your critical files up.
