Nope. Brussels actually brought us this decades ago, when they triggered the engineering of a completely new plug:

Remember the "fun" we had plugging this crap at the backside of VCRs and TV sets?

I'd have no issues with an iPhone without wires. We cope just fine without it on the Apple Watch.

Edit - forgot to add that security should also be much stronger if there is no port to plug into and brute force passwords. I'm 100% for a fully wireless future.
Wireless charging needs to be A LOT better for speed, range and public accessibility before I will buy any smartphone without ports.

One of the biggest drawbacks to having a portless (ie, wireless-charge-only) phone is services like CarPlay. Yes, I'm aware that there is also Wireless CarPlay; however, there are still a lot of cars--2020 models even--that only offer the standard CarPlay. Car makers are notorious for the stance of "if you want the newer technology, just buy a new car [preferably from us]."

You're obviously not a developer. Wireless debugging on the Apple Watch is a disaster. Has cost me hundreds of hours of my life. I'd pay extra for a watch I could just plug in.
The blame for that is on Apple and Apple alone. If they decide to go wireless with the phone and make it as ****** an experience, that will be too.

I like the idea of this, but legislation isn't the way forward here IMO.

What happens if someone wants to release a phone with only wireless charging? And then there's the mess of USB-C chargers themselves. Different wattages, and sometimes the spec isn't exactly the same (e.g. Nintendo switch).

I mean, the next logical conclusion is that we ditch wires completely, how does that work with a mandated USB-C port.

wireless charging in and of itself is an industry standard.
Now a different thing would be for Apple to come up with their own wireless charging protocol that would render all wireless phones incompatible with any other charging mat besides Apple ones.

I agree on the premise we need to reduce waste, but if that's the goal I think there is a simpler law they can pass: no more cables and wall plugs bundled with a smartphone.
This way Apple, and other companies, will gradually move to USB-C as it will be convenient for their customers, but in the meantime old cables and plugs will still be useful. I have plenty of Lighting cables, so I don't need a new one when I buy an Apple product. Once they move iPhone to USB-C I'll buy a new cable, or use one that I already have for my Mac or iPad Pro.
Speaking of which, no more earphones in the bundle. It is a waste, I'd rather have a discount or a coupon to buy other accessories.
I've said this for a while. Just get the phone and either lower the cost or provide vouchers/gift cards to get the accessories if you need or upgrades of them at the customer's cost.

Help Apple make money

trick answer: be charged from usb-a

Fantastic, we are quickly moving to one cable to charge everything. The convince of being able to plug my tablet, camera, and other devices into a USB-C cable to charge is smashing. Here's hoping Apple are quick to refresh the iPhone with USB-C.

no, we’re not. You’re looking at the wrong end of the cable.

tomorrow in the news: EU mandates apple to abandon iOS and iPadOS in favor of Android.

there are so many smartphones around the world, wouldn't it be easy for all of the to have a single operating system? wouldn't it be better for the customers?

people aren't morons. if they dislike the iPhone because of its charging connector, they won't buy it. leave it to them. stop helping me, you've done enough: the mobile browsing experience is a piece of s..t because of the mandated 'hello i'm a website that uses cookies' popups, that cover 80% of the screen real estate. thank you, EU.

This is offensive, un-American, and anti-innovation. Apple has developed a better connector, EU says "we don't care, you MUST use what we tell you". If EU had their way, we would still be using wall phones. No computers allowed either since they MUST be compatible with typewriters. They are Luddites and it's a shame that they might be successful in stopping Apple from innovating.

Goodbye Lightning.

I bought US$43 in Lightning adapters last year but oh well. 😐

I'm glad that every computer will soon require a 5.25inch floppy drive. I mean CD player. Wait, I mean DVD player. Or is that Blu-ray? Of course, we also need every country to run at 110 volts, since that is the American standard and we invented it (LOL). Does every phone need to have a rotary dial with specific dimensions?

Trying to lock down technology for every device is a really bad idea. IMO.

Do you want an iPhone without wires? This is how you get an iPhone without wires.
Agreed. While I love usb-c Apple is correct in that it may stifle innovation when you are forced to use one standard. What if they really want to maintain thinness and choose a mag safe connector style. This will allow fast transfer speeds and minimal space requirements but you can’t develop it because of this EU rule?

What a bad idea. So we'll never get a charging solution better than USB-C now. Politicians shouldn't get involved in technology, especially when they don't understand it.

this is what worries me. What if a new standard allows for more efficient, safer, and faster throughput? We can’t adopt until the law catches up?

Government needs to stick with safety and security and butt out of everything else.

When Apple cut all ports on MBP and just put USB-C it was the future and so awesome, but now with this EU sucks, and oh dear lord, how could they?

I personally like this, next should be to sell phones without cables, or/and sell them separately.
Definitely agree with phone only with price drops or some sort of GC or voucher to use if you need to buy accessories.

No to wireless only until wireless ups it's speed/range and public availability.

Not sure where everyone got the idea that Apple has to switch the lightning port to usb-c on the iPhone.. The article says they have to have usb-c on the charger not the phone which Apple has already starting to provide with the 11Pro, ProMax and iPad Pro's..
