More like lightning to USB-C "dongles".
[automerge]1580487917[/automerge]

Please show me on the doll where new regulations have improved tech development... I'll wait...

Show me in reality where and how this doesn’t. I don’t where the hell dolls come into it buddy. USB-C is literally USB 4. It’s the ultimate connector. When it changes the laws will change. Not everywhere is as bad as American you know. The EU certainly isn’t.

The ruling doesnt say that we are stuck with USB-C for the rest of our lives....i mean Jesus....

Effectively it does. Because you are going to have to wait for them to pass a law to change it. Instead of, you know, apple (or whoever) just implementing it.

Have fun with your outdated technology.

Yes, one standard please.

USB-C please.

I do not appreciate having to replace cheap lightning cables. While I had the MBP, it was super annoying not to be able to sync my phone just using usb-c.
The dongle bs is just money in Apple's already too full pockets.

Good on the EU.

So the rest of us have to suffer with an inferior forced charging cable because you, who are already carrying around a laptop sized bag can’t be bothered to carry an extra charger? Gotta love the people who think the universe should resolve around their convenience at the expense of others.
Yea this is baffling me too. All you would need at the most is C>C and C>L. And then the charger for the most power hungry device.

I don't know about Android, but this has not been my experience with my iPhone 8. In fact, my lightning port has been clogged with crud and is no longer usable so I'm exclusively wireless charging. I've recharged from completely dead many times using Qi and had no issues.

Another issue with going Qi charging only. If the battery is completely drained, it can no longer charge with Qi. I've just had a Pixel 3 (dev device) sitting on a Qi charger for 3 hours, and it hasn't charged at all. It's a dev device for when I do Android development and it hasn't been used in a while so it was completely dead. Had to plug it into a cable for it start charging again.

So the EU says this is for environmental concerns? Bull. Someone is lobbying them.

This will instantly create a massive amount of waste in the form of existing Lightning cables & accessories which won’t work with the new connector. Or it will create waste by requiring millions of adaptors to continue using old Lightning accessories.

If they were actually concerned about e-waste they’d do something about the billion or so Android phones that get junked every year, instead of worrying about a few cables.

Absolute nonsense, Apple includes a cable in the box when you buy the phone. If anything Apple should just include a lightning to usb-c adapter to get around this. Means little to nothing anyway, they'll drop the port in the coming year.. just another political hit job to gain points with someone else who's getting money elsewhere.

Apple has previously included an adapter so I don’t see any change from their past decision.

Apple and other manufacturers should have a Qi magnetic type flat charging disc on the back and sides of its products. Something similar to the Apple Watch charging method but only flatter much flatter and the cable movable in orientation. I am honestly surprised this has not happened yet. If it can accommodate data as well then bonus. iPad Pro has the right idea but needs to expand to charging the main unit not just for accessory usage.

Sooner to transition rather than continuing the same process. Change usually brings on these situations, but sooner rather than later.

This looks like it’s actually about the charger, not the phone port. As long as the chargers are USB-C, it’s fine. Apple is already in compliance with this standard with the iPhone 11 Pro, which includes a USB-C charger and USB-C to lightning cable. They’ve supported USB-C PD chargers since the iPhone 8, when they made USB-C to lightning cables available for purchase.
This makes sense and hopefully you’re right.

I mean seriously. Beyond the health stuff, what is the point of that device? It only sells at all because the uber privileged want their shiny status gadgets.
I imagine thewatch makes wearers feel like they're less addicted to their phones, much like nicotine gum makes smokers feel they are less addicted to cigarettes. Personally, I found the watch's utility unimpressive. Someone gifted me their previous watch and I returned it to him a week later.

I don't want to go USB-C on the iPhone. I also don't want the iPhone to be Qi charging only. Sigh.

I am ready to completely switch to USB C. Still don’t get why Apple is fighting this.
Lol, well as long as YOU are ready!

Brilliant that 1.5 billion devices using lighting cables should all switch & have those cables thrown in the landfill.... you know, to keep stuff out of the landfill, derp!

And 3 years from now, when the (already 6 year old standard) gets replaced by USB D or whatever, it’ll be WONDERFUL to not be able to use it. Like literally have it be against the law to use new tech until/unless a new law is passed. That doesn’t sound insane at all.
I’m ridiculously grateful that you welcome the government micromanaging your life all the way down to what you are allowed to plug in.
I guess that helps offset the fact that I think it sucks.
Their bs excuse is embarrassing.
How about if they make a law that the size and thickness of phones & the placement of buttons and cameras can’t change... you’d be behind that? I mean, think about all the cases that could be reused & stay out of the landfill!!!

Sorry, but anyone that welcomes this may as go ahead and go get “EU” branded on their backside... as they’ve clearly accepted being simple cattle, herded & controlled down to teeniest nuance of their lives.

I think you and I are the only ones that understand it's the charger that needs to be usb-c and not the phone...

At least where I live, old chargers are recycled. Throwing it in the landfill would be such a waste of energy and resources. In fact, throwing one in the trash is illegal.

As much as I am all for standardising charging cables, and have been an avid apple user for many many years with many many apple products, what I don't seem to understand is this notion that this new EU ruling they say is to reduce the amount of electronic waste. Surely, this adoption will mean that people who now buy new phones who have existing chargers for home, work, car, office, kitchen, lounge, bedroom etc will have to ditch these and now buy multiple new charges to have in their home, work, car, office, kitchen, lounge, bedroom etc. Thus, now, having to throw away all the old chargers and create mountains of electronic waste in the process and buying new chargers!

I know the long term will be less, but this short term issue is the sudden need to chuck out all the sudden only chargers and buy new ones... Is the EU not getting a kick back from some electronics manufacturers to force people to adopt one technology and therefore having to buy it all again?

Just my thoughts!

I had the AW5 for two weeks, it’s functionality at present is limited for my use case. Not to say others may not find its present utility useful. I just find there is a lot it can improve upon and maybe make the screen bigger, I guess it’s good in that regard that there is room for improvements and innovation.

Yeah great. No wonder Apple will completely kill the port in 2021. I like Lightning, i don't have a single USB-C device or cable. But i rather make the switch to USB-C instead of ending up with no port at all. I want to use iTunes to sync my music library, and to do local backups. A port is also nice for File Transfer or if your phone is dead / bricked for whatever reason and you'll need to restore it.

This is a massive overreach by the EU and the reason why more and more people in Europe are fed up with the Euro politicians.
This is NOT about waste: every month, for absolute no defensible reason, the European Parliament moves from Brussels to Strasbourg at an estimated cost of $125 million dollars annually. According to euronews-com, “the environmental impact is significant and stands at "between 11,000 and 19,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions" a year. These are the same people that can't stop talking about climate change.

This is about being dizzy with megalomania, the power to tell others what to do, power gone to politicians heads like usual and seen almost everywhere in the world. Nothing more.

If companies like Apple included an 18W USB-C Fast Charger in the box by default there would be little reason for people to go out an purchase a 3rd party or one from Apple. In the grand scheme of things this produces more e-waste, pollution, etc but also jobs and an economy. It’s ridiculous that phone companies market and make they phones fast at everything but then include a slow charger, why would anyone not want their device to charge quickly. It just does not make any sense to me. 18W USB-C chargers should be the default provided by all manufacturers.

I like the idea of this, but legislation isn't the way forward here IMO.

It's the way forward when you have pure greed companies like Apple who refuse to do the right thing by the consumer. If Apple had put USB-C on the phone 3 years ago when it should have we wouldn't be having this conversation.
