No, EU simply doesn't like that USA is forcing their crappy standards (or better, lack thereof) onto the rest of the world. Just because USA doesn't care about safety, personal rights or life quality doesn't mean that nobody should care about it.

Go back and read your comment. It's a ridiculous statement and it sounds like you simply don't like the USA.

The plan would be a major blow to Apple and Google, and result in fundamental changes to how operating systems ship and function. However, it is unclear how shipping an iPhone, for example, with no pre-installed Apple apps from would work, when presumably even the App Store itself could not be pre-installed as it would then be a "preferred" app.
This is exactly how Windows works already. When you log on for the first time, there's a randomized selection screen for the default web browser.

This doesn't make any sense.

Imagine the anxiety of setting up your phone for the first time and then it starts asking you all these questions about which browser you want, messenger service, etc. And if you're a first-time user, how would you even know which one to choose?

It should have defaults, but have those defaults be replaceable. That's all it needs to be. You can be informed of the option of replacing them, but shouldn't have to be forced to make all these decisions up front.

Plenty of people want stuff to just work right away without having to think about it. Then when you're comfortable, you can replace apps. Actually I'd say everyone would want it to just work. Power users can immediately replace apps with other apps. They're already well informed and have a preference. Doesn't matter if the starting app is Safari or Chrome (as an example) because you can replace it.

Good job EU, solving problems that don't exist to justify your own existence. I really wish Apple and Google would stop selling within the EU just to see how long it takes them to retract this trash.
😂😂yeah I’m sure that’s a good plan -that’ll show ‘em and the 450million people that live there! Oh... wait.

So the same EU that enacted GDPR compliance to protect user data is now going to force companies to share user data with any competitor who wants it?

wasn’t there some EU Regulation drawn that a user should be able to take their data to another service if they want to? Maybe that goes hand in hand like if I used Instagram for years but feel like leaving, I should be able to take my data to another app. That’s how I got it

I would prefer if Apple & Google were allowed to pre-install "10" of their apps, AND, more-importantly, in Apple's case, the App Store App was completely RE-designed with input from App Devs !

As it currently stands, Apple's App Store App is NO MORE THAN a Marketing & Advertising Arm of Apple !

Just look at the "Today" tab today, its got an Ad for HBO Max & Apple Arcade at the top !

Also, forcing Apple to Disclose per-Category Revenue Numbers for each of the top ten App Stores around the world, at each Quarterly OR Annual Earnings Release, would go a long ways towards proving at least some transparency to the General Public, & third-party App Devs.

Let's ban pre-installing the OS. For example, PC without MS Windows, Linux server without Linux, Macs without macOS, Apple Watch without watchOS, Mercedes Benz/BMW without Audio software/Navigation/Apps. /s. EU is following the China fascism.
China is not fascism, it’s communism. There is a massive difference here. The EU is nowhere near either.

Some of these ideas might have been good and quite useful about 20 years ago, especially during the Microsoft anti-trust case, but I can see how this could be handled very poorly. All phones come with a stock set of useful apps. However, ensuring that a store or carrier doesn't junk up your phone with a bunch of preloaded garbage would be nice.
