It sounds like they need to add a technical person who understands iOS and Android to their board. A brand new phone with no apps? At a minimum you need core apps to conduct basic functions.

So all of these companies should share what cost them untold amounts of money to build and mature over years out of the goodness of their hearts with no financial benefit so competitors can benefit free of charge and eat into their own profits. If the EU wants to force this, these companies will need to buy into / compensate the larger companies for their access. Nothing is free.

Go back and read your comment. It's a ridiculous statement and it sounds like you simply don't like the USA.

Not any more ridiculous than the comment I was replying to. And of course I was hyperbolizing. My point is simple: US laws are biased towards the interests of large groups. Be it food quality, privacy, health, employment — the safety of an individual citizen hardly matters.

We critically need legislations protecting personal data. Making money of collecting invasive personal data of private individuals is not ok.

Funnily enough, Apple seems to agree with my sentiment. If the proposed law passes, Apple is likely to win, as it will primarily hit Google, Facebook and Microsoft.

Everyone seems to assume that there would be some automatic sync between platforms in place. I highly doubt that. I assume it’s more like if you use service X but would like to use smaller service Y, you should be able to „share“ as in take your data from X to Y otherwise you may never leave X cuz Y is too small and therefore X becomes bigger and bigger with Y never having had a chance.

i remember a while back that the EU wanted for messenger services to be interchangeable like a WhatsApp user should be able to write someone on Telegram etc. aka „Sharing data“

There are so many technical issues that aren’t addressed in this bill. Legislators are clueless about tech, which is why it’s in Tech’s best interest to self-regulate. The video game industry learned a similar lesson when they created the ESRB.

Selectively quoting me to change the context doesn’t make me suddenly agree with you.

😂😂yeah I’m sure that’s a good plan -that’ll show ‘em and the 450million people that live there! Oh... wait.

(that better?)

Exactly. Let the EU deal with the ire of their constituents. They'll quickly learn not to implement this kind of trash.

BTW the point here is, if both Apple and Google threaten to stop selling in EU, the threat alone would likely be enough to get EU to retract this garbage before it even takes affect. And if not, again, the ire of their constituents certainly will.

If consumers can't understand how the proposals would actually benefit them, you've got a problem.

Will Apple be allowed to pre-install the AppStore app? Because if they are not allowed to do that, we are all forever stuffed.

Understand the idea of consumer choice. But how will any device be useable without any installed software. A computer without software is a paperweight.

I heard that there was a time when Windows in the EU would offer during its initial setup to install any of a few browsers that the user selected. This might have just been a proposal that never actually became law.

The same idea could apply to the App Stores on iOS and Android - it could offer for the user to have any of a few App Stores and Web Browsers on their device. Pick the ones you want, then the others get uninstalled to save hard drive space for stuff you actually want.

Probably the EU would have some process for getting the Apps and Browsers that are permitted to appear during that initial install.

Apples competitors have convinced the EU to fight Apple for them with the govt since its too hard to fight in the market. Typical cronyism masquerading as good for the consumer regulation. Also known as the bootlegger and baptist problem. If you think the govt knows best for markets you missed the history of the 20th century.

WTF, didn't think the EU could get any stupider but there it is... no pre-installed apps.. So I guess nothing works anymore.. if you can't have a app store or browser installed to start then how the hell do you use it!! Who are these idiots making these rules! Also, to many companies consumer data is how they make money honestly, for better or worse we don't pay for apps like Facebook, Twitter, Google Search, Apple Maps, etc... they are free because they collect data and in some cases sell that data. While I think consumer data should always be anonymized and not sold to bad actors or for other bad use cases... the only way I can see anyone in the EU using technology going forward is going to be paying a lot more for it! Also these tech companies worked very hard making system to collect and analyze this data, there is no way in hell they will share it. The EU can go F itself imo with these rules.

Honestly all that needs to happen is give people the damn choice, let them pick their own browser, mail client, assistant, notes, whatever.. but at least there has to be a default at first. As long as their is an option I am happy... Apple still has a long way to go with this, but have started with the Browser and Mail.. now they just need to let me change my other main apps like calendar, maps, assistant, etc...

Honestly, Apple and Google should just pull out of the EU, let the languish and start to fall even more behind with sub par tech, see how their citizens like it when they can't use Google Search or buy an iPhone...

Research these things. The US does have far lower consumer standards then the EU for many many things
Translation: The US is a freer country than the EU. Thats how many in the US see it. Its always a trade off. There is no perfect balance. The US optimizes differently.

Makes sense to me, but sadly the UK is leaving the EU so it won't apply to us. :(

This is actually the first time I’ve seen something and thought “thank god we’re leaving”.

A move like this won’t just impact Apple and Google. It negatively impacts the end user experience as setting up a device just became tedious and long winded and will kill some apps as people will just become disengaged.

Really bad idea from the EU. Very much a “solution” that exists to create a problem it pretends to fix.
