Then the EU should have mandated the possibility of a one out click. As mentioned before these politician-lawyers don't get tech.

True, but tech companies who “get tech” do so in a way that is not in your interest. So you have a choice between people who don’t get tech but try to protect consumers and people who get tech but try to exploit consumers. So, take your pick.

I prefer the lightning connector to usb c for the iPhone. Reversible and small. Why take a step backwards?
USB-C is also reservable.

I don't think the USB-C port is as durable, and I'd rather damage three cables than one port. Not that I've damaged even one Lightning cable in the last five years.

I think it's time to throw Apple's arbitrary, proprietary chargers/ports out and force all brands to adopt the same standard so that we can charge our phones, smart watches, tablets, laptops, etc., with the same cable/ports.
Apple's Lightning predates USB-C and protects the device more. Switching is fairly ridiculous, and to be totally honest it annoys me they're doing this on the iPad. For sure it's going to get them more revenue in device repairs.

It would also kill CarPlay in my car, and come with other downsides. My iPhone 12 Pro is sufficiently water resistant as it is.
Sometimes I think it is the only way to get car makers to actually implement wireless CarPlay. I'd be willing to live with an adapter for a while if it would mean I didn't need to worry about this in the future.

why are private companies forced nowadays to give service, adopt technologies or create technologies by force?

Private companies come together all the time to develop new worldwide standards and have done for decades. Apple is almost alone in this apart from Sony.

Buy a USB-C to Lightening cable or get an adapter. Cars are already coming out with USB-C ports in them and some have wireless CarPlay.

The quicker Apple makes the change the better, IMO. It is stupid to have iPads with USB-C and iPhones with lightening.

No no no, you’ve got it all wrong, trillion dollar corporations are just our benevolent caretakers. /s

I prefer lightning to USB-C tbh. Not sure the right wording but the lightning cord feels more secure and tight in the charging port. Like it feels firm like it won’t pop out by accident

There is a lot of FUD here. I own the first iPad Pro with USB-C. It is charged every day, there is absolutely no difference in reliability or stability between Ligthning and USB-C. The only difference is that Ligthning cables tend to break while I didn‘t manage to break a single USB-C cable until now.

The only reason Apple sticks to Lightning is that Apple is in total control of Lightning. This also relates to Apples MFI.

I’m on this bandwagon, I charge the magic keyboard, Magic Mouse, AirPods Max, AirPods Pro case, AppleTV remote, connect iPhones for testing builds to the PC and many more that I forget via Lightning cables. I also connect a couple of android devices that are USB-C and an iPad Pro 11in USB-C, also to test devs and builds and whatnot.

My personal takes:
  • The USB-C cables are hands down clunkier, thicker, when they unfold or untwist they even move the phones around.
  • The USBC tips are massive compared to the lightning cable and the “plugging/sitting” experience has a lot more friction. Hard to explain.
  • The USBC plugging experience is the only one that has fooled me into thinking that it was plugged to then find out that the next day the iPad didn’t charge or that the phone didn’t connect to the Mac.
I can imagine how chaotic everything will be when all of that will be USB-C. At least the keyboard/mouse I charge them a couple of hours every few months.

TLDR; I’m not entirely sure that Lightning is all that useless and that USBC is the silver holy grail bullet… it’s perfect for thunderbolt devices/screens/egpus/eSSDs etc that are there on the back of a Mac mini or iMac where it won’t move, maybe larger devices like an iPad Pro but an iPhone or even smaller, AppleTV remotes and what not… I vote no to that.

As much as I would want iPhone to have USB-C I hope this never gets through. Imagine if they did this when micro-USB was the standard. We would have been stuck with that forever. At some point we will get a connector that's even better than USB-C but this legislation would not allow any new standard to be used.
Then they will just update the legislation to point to a new standard, which should be drafted not by a single company, but by all major players.

For people in the states I’ll tell you this, the EU has no power so don’t worry, in the U.K. we left them; they can’t force apple to do anything
Sure they can. Make retail tax 150% for all device sold in the past 5 years.

And this is how the iPhones goes portless... to escape the EU police state
"For radio wave health reasons all devices with wireless charging and data transfer must provide a wired option natively on device."

Hole plugged.

Or instead of state thuggery, how about this: Make a device with a port people hate? Ok, you won’t sell many and will consider changing it.
If you have 99 good things and 1 bad thing with few alternatives. The market forces are not strong enough to force a change, especially if you have ecosystem rent-seeking behaviour.

Oh PLEASE with the environmental angle. Corporations waste FAR more resources than individuals combined ever could, exploiting the environment for profit. If the EU wanted to make environmental progress they'd focus on the corporations and leave individuals with their one cable alone. These smooth brain troglodytes want everyone in the world using USBC regardless of whether the manufacturer deems it appropriate and then what, we'll need the permission of a bunch of politicians to switch to a better port in the future? Give me a break, what a freaking joke!
What about a non-profit working group or a standardization institute like the ISO or IEC?

i'd like to see Apple make all there connectors USB C, only due to my MacBook Pro and iPad Pro are USB C, sick of having so many cables.

Not sure if the EU should mandate for everyone, it'll be interesting to see if it happens

The gov’t should never poke their nose in product design decisions unless there’s a public safety issue involved. Ever. Full stop. The only possible outcome is stifling of innovation which hurts the public in the long run. This is the problem with politics today… too many narcissistic politicians who think they know what’s best for everybody.

If there is a line of USB-C iPhones, it’s cheaper for Apple just to use that exclusively. But, the key is to force them to have a USB-C on-device not via an adaptor.

What about emission standard for vehicles?

What about efficiency rating of residential appliances?

What about cellular radio frequency allocations?

Your “public safety” exemption should be updated to “public interest” exemption.

Out of ignorance, I felt that Lightning was a better connector, but that has since changed. I've had two phones with non-working Lightning connections after the internal contacts bent too much through norrmal usage. Since experiencing USB-C on a few devices now, I must say it's a good connection, and Lightning's days are numbered. I wish it weren't this way, but that's how I see it now.
