We will have to disagree about Apple being forced.

Also, Apple wasn’t fighting about keeping Lighting, they where fighting the EU, because the EU law makes it very unlikely for innovation to take place now on the USB-port types.

Let’s say the USB group wanted to develop USB type D, which would be far superior to USB-C. It wouldn’t be possible under the law, as it would require every vendor to pretty much change to the new port type in like a year or two, which isn’t feasible.

Edit: yes next decade, I should have probably been more clear about that in the original post.

We can agree to disagree. It’s most likely due to the mfi certification of proprietary lightening cable which brings revenue for greed. Also they wanted to eventually go to MagSafe and make a cable-less phone (like the audio-jack).

The EU is rules-driven. This decision is not "sparing Apple Maps" as stated in the headline, it is just an application of the rules. End of discussion.

Some people like to endlessly criticise the EU, but really everything is rather straightforward ... follow the rules.
It is NOT rules driven. It's driven the desire to punish success by an American company. Apple Maps on iPhone is no different than any other application on iOS that the EU has brought down the hammer on. The only difference is that Apple Maps has not been as successful in the EU as other applications on iPhone has.

That’s exactly right. No gatekeeper status ONLY because it’s not successful. What changes how the rules are applied? Well, if Apple has the audacity to be successful with Apple Maps in the EU. So, I mean, for the Apple folks in the EU wanting to know why Apple Maps sucks, there’s literally an incentive for Apple NOT to make it better so fewer people use it.

And that article was written in 2020. Anyone who had listened to what Apple said previously knew that Lightning’s time was coming to an end. People that WEREN’T listening are quite sure that the EU, that were all about microUSB were behind USB-C. They weren’t behind it until it was already done and being rolled out worldwide! They changed their minds after realizing that everyone was moving to USB-C anyway. Not because the EU wanted it, but because it was designed, by folks NOT in the EU regulatory sphere, to be an effective replacement. Not empty words on a page “do what we want but literally we have no idea what it even means to do what we want” but folks interested in actually improving the connector that future devices should use and then working sensibly towards that goal.

And Apple are STILL fighting the legislation. We have USB-C primarily because the EU regulators weren’t involved! And, those who actually know how to present and develop new ideas and get them agreed to, did precisely that. We’re NOT having progress made on the NEXT big thing because not Intel, not Apple, not ANYONE is going to be able to get tech companies on board as long as the EU maintains their stance on the restriction of progress.

When Apple removes all ports because they can’t physically put a USB-C port in the phone a lot of people on here will scream about how Apple is just trying to sell magsafe devices. But it’ll be the EU’s fault because they killed Apple’s incentive to make a smaller, better port and ability to put it on phones in the EU.

I do not understand the EU. Your looking at Apple Maps as a gatekeeper? The fact that you're LOOKING AT IT. I'm done with the EU. Ya'll can keep it. What about Spotify??????????????????????????????????????? 🙄

What people say on here (a lot of bs) is irrelevant. Apple has released the MagSafe tech. Everyone is using it and it’s being done to standardize before States get involved. No. The EU wants to incorporate it. But standardize cables so consumers do not need to buy multiple proprietary cables for different products (a good thing), plus a reduction of e-waste.

Apple was clearly moving to USB-C. Just because they weren’t doing it fast enough for tech nerds doesn’t mean they weren’t. (Side note: my mother in law delayed buying a new phone because Apple switched to USB-C - she didn’t want to buy a bunch of new cables. I suspect she’s much closer to Apple’s typical user than you or I are).

Hell, shortly after Apple switched they started offering features on Pro phones that required USB-C’s bandwidth. But sure, Apple was going to stick with Lightening to make a few million on MiFi licensing.

All the EU did was stifle innovation. Remember, they wanted to force everyone to move to Micro-USB two years after lightening was released. Why anyone thinks they should be allowed to set the port after that, I will never understand.

The EU tried to standardize on micro-USB because it was “unlikely better port would emerge”. Do you think they were right (even though a better one already had)? Or were they wrong? If you agree they were wrong, why are you so convinced they are right now?

We do have human excrement in SF. Loads. That much is true.
Not a fan of that. We even have poop tracking apps. I'm not saying everywhere here is bougie but it's a big land.

I dont know where I stand on the USB-C iPhone debate actually.

USB-C significantly better than lightning, and lightning was bound to be obsoleted since it was unnecessarily proprietary and licensing fees kept (certified) cable prices sky high. Also for its time, lightning was quite good. Before USB-C existed, there was nothing like lightning (going into the port in either orientation was a novelty)

On the other hand, when I think of 'cutting edge technology,' EU is not exactly top of mind 😛

Can both parties be wrong for different reasons?

Pull your ear if you were put up to saying this. Don't you guys not have free speech?
Like, won't an unmarked van pull up V for Vendetta style if you even slightly dissent?
(I understand you may not be in a position to be able to respond to this)

Has anyone here been jailed for saying F orange Hitler?
Could anyone reasonably argue with a straight face we have any shortage of that?

And can't you not even buy a pointed kitchen cutlery under a certain age, you know, to cut meat with?
That seems rather odd for such a supposed safe place...

I guess I ought to start chilling in Plato's cave and tuning into the BBC to educate myself. They're the real ones.

pardon my tasty word salad

I am legitimately envious of the restrictions you guys put in your food. It's terrifying what we got in ours. Can't even read or pronounce most of it assuming we're even afforded the privilege to know that it's in there.
I think I speak on behalf of most Britons here when I say that you’re writing sounds like a parody of the most ardent Fox News viewer.

I can only suggest that you use chatGPT to fact check some of your prejudices against the state of order in the UK. Compare crime statistics, social problems and other markers between London and your own nearest city.

If someone gets shot in the UK, it makes our national news! It’s talked about for days, we see it but very rarely. When someone gets stabbed in London it’s a national news story, thankfully it’s a lot rarer than it feels sometimes.

Do your own comparison research, awaken your critical facilities.

2024 had 503 mass killings recorded in the USA, mass killings being defined as 4 or more people. Projected to be 22% down, so around 400 events where 4 or more people murdered.
In 2025 then just over 500 murder victims in total in the UK.

Chicago is looking at a 49% drop in the number of murders since 2021 when recorded 800, so somewhere around 400 murders.

So one city in the USA has about 4/5th of the UK total despite a 49% drop in 4 years.

Murder and violent crime is much less in the UK then the USA.

Ultimately Apple is small potatoes as far as toxic American companies go.

I’d rather the EU go hard and rip out X and Meta that are rotting our societies.

And put a heavy boot on Google and Microsoft’s throats ….they are hardly better.

Chicago is a hellscape no doubt. But what are the respective populations of each country ?

Anyways I don’t care to get into a spatter already a bit bored

I think there’s a reason steak knife’s require a permit and we’ll leave it at that.

That’s just scratching the surface I just don’t wanna get suspended here for spouting off. Yoy guys have no pretense of free speech there.

That kinda isn’t great on its own lol

Honestly it’s so easy these days to sound informed. Ya literally just ask questions.

We don’t sell knives to children. Who would have thought?

Tell me you’ve never been to Europe without saying you’ve never been to Europe

Probably just watches Fox News, my American mother in law does and the things she comes out about my country with from watching it are some of the most absurd things I’ve ever heard in my life. Apparently I’m already living under shariah law and there are daily riots in the capital. The last protests I could find that happened were farmers protesting inheritance tax about a month ago.

To clarify, multi-millionaire farmers protesting. A proper working class uprising!!😂

Hey. Fun fact, Steve said Lightning was the Apple phone cable for the next decade. Guess what, Apple put USB type C in their phones at the end of that decade.

I am not saying the EU didn’t do good in making USB type C the standard. The USB protocol is a mess though and not every Type-C cable is the same and nothing was ever done about fixing the labeling until recently when the USB standards board finally updated their requirements.
apple only brought usb c to the iPad, iPhones only got them when the EU had laws requiring it. nice try rewriting history.

Apple was an American company. Your country has a proud heritage when it comes to technology, the history behind Silicon Valley is really worth reading, I admire your defence.
Apple is now a Global company, its shares are owned by banks and pension funds all over the world, by individuals from 100 different companies. It sales take place in over 100 countries.

My point is that Apple knows it has to comply with different regulations in each country, it has evolved its structure over the decades to do exactly this. There are people in the company who relish the challenge of creating a single product that is compliant throughout the global community. If they could just make a single widget that was acceptable they would be out of a job or bored witless. Instead they have to strategically evaluate how to extract the maximum profit out of each region they can, what a great puzzle.

So don't be angry, Apple aren't angry, they are enjoying the challenges that the global community bring them.

The rules are open-ended.

The commission can designate something a gateway based on

A) some objective criteria or
B) subjective, qualitative criteria:

8. The Commission shall designate as a gatekeeper, in accordance with the procedure laid down in Article 17, any undertaking providing core platform services that meets each of the requirements of paragraph 1 of this Article, but does not satisfy each of the thresholds in paragraph 2 of this Article.
[...]
(g) other structural business or service characteristics. [which aren't specified]
