I dont think you get the point of it and are trying to do more with it then whats its designed purpose is. Is like taking a 3 cyclinder Geo to the race track and wondering why it isn't performing like a sports car.

Exactly. I know a lot of people want to do more with it, but it's not meant to be a laptop. SJ himself said it's a hybrid. If you need more productivity then go with a laptop. I've enjoyed mine for what it's worth - a surfing device.

I just don't get the appeal of the iPad I guess.

Yup. I don't "get" the appeal of chocolate covered grasshoppers, crickets, and ants, but, yet they are a delicacy to some. The world does not revolve around you. Sorry. If you don't like something just move on. Life is too short.

I'm no Apple fanboy. Far from it. my first system was an 8080a PC in the 80's and I've been Windows since. However, I LOVE my iPad. I take it everywhere. It's unbelievably convenient. Saves time, space, effort, etc.

I can see why some people are annoyed that the iPad can't do more though. I think the reason is that the iPad COULD do much more but Apple isn't letting us use it to the full extent possible. It's Apple's decision to restrict. That's the annoying part. If it was just a state-of-the-art problem then, yea, we have no right to get annoyed at all.

I wonder if these folks post after having an indifferent eating experience at a restaurant??

Funny you should mention this. I went to McDonald's the other day and discovered that they would not sell me filet mignon. Not only that, but the beef they sold me tasted like hamburger! I was also sorely disappointed by the little coffee-mixer straws. I tried using one of the straws to get the aforementioned hamburger-tasting burger into my mouth and it kept falling off!

I thought about returning the burger for a refund, but I heard they might charge me a restocking fee on top of all the other problems I had!

Are you saying that iPad compares to a laptop just like McDonalds compares to a steak house? You might be right but not for the price disparity.

Not really the best analogy. We're looking at the utility of a product not the quality of the product. :)

Does anyone remember when the iPhone first came out, you couldn't even do a simple SEARCH of your contacts? No copy and paste?

Give it time - I think the iPad will grow. The fundamental iTunes dependency and closed Apple app ecosystem won't, but I think the device will most definitely improve.

And then Android will come around 1 year later and one up it. :D

Apple fanboys are some of the most smug people around.

Apple haters are worse.

Go into a Mac forum and post smack about a product while clearly showing you don't know what the product was intended for and what do you expect?

You knew the responses you would get, don't even go there....

I get it's a consumption device. And atnthe price, that's what I say is wrong with it. I hate having to go through apple for any video. I hate having to jump through all kinds of hoops for putting a file on the device. I have atomic browser, and when I reach 4 tabs, it freezes. If u really can't carry around a 4 lb laptop, that's just ridiculous. That is hardly any weight at all. For consuming content through apple, it can't get any better. Butasa true consumption device, it sucks. No south park studois, no hulu, no Facebook videos, no videos on failblog, nothing. I get what its made for, but it doesn't do it at all well. So, whats the point of it. And the guy that posted before me is a douche bag. Yes, if it was a restaurant forum, I would post about it. Notice how it says iPad forum, where you discuss the iPad. So should people not post about apps either now?

Have you tried literally any other applications but Atomic Browser?

Air Video is pretty amazing, it will let you view any video on your PC (as long as there is no DRM) and it will convert it live for you.

There is no Hulu, no Facebook videos, but in time almost all of these sites will convert to HTML5. I guarantee that, the more sites that convert to HTML5 the more viewers they will get from portable devices like these. More and more companies are jumping on the HTML5 bandwagon like Microsoft and Opera. More and more people are realizing how constrained Adobe Flash is, even more so then Apple.

So if you give it a while, you will have almost everything you want out of this device.

FYI - Facebook already did. All new videos are supposed to be in HTML5 now.

I'd also like to know what the OP wanted to do and can't.

I've been able to FTP files to my server and edit HTML files (FTPontheGo), log into my desktop computer at home (Mac) and at work (Windows) using LogMeIn Ignition, draw with various drawing apps (ArtStudio, Sketchbook, Layers, Brushes), take notes in a meeting with GhostWriter (and looking forward to Notetaker HD), write and send a document in Pages, browse the web, email, text (TextPlus), edit a few photos (PixelMagic, Photogene or PhotoPad) listen to music, watch a few youtube videos, enjoy a netflix movie, rewatch the latest episode of "Lost", read RSS feeds, subscribe to a few magazines, buy a few books (and download a few free ones), use GoogleMaps and the built-in GPS to explore a new area... oh, and go ALL F'in DAY without needing to plug the device in! LOL

I personally love the iPad, it is the next best investment since my iPhones. I do t take it everywhere I go because I don't have the iPad 3G, but if I did I would. I plan to take it with me to classes and take notes and write papers.

The only TV series I watch on TV is Lost, and zi can do that on the iPad now. It doesn't bother me that I have to wait a couple of days to see the nex episode. Netflix is also pretty awesome.

I love going days without charging my iPad too.

Macrumors: It's not the iPad that has to change, it's YOU that has to change.

so you thought jailbreaking it would make it into a completely new device? good job

I totally agree.
I have a 13" MacBook and a lot of the time it's just "too much" to bring. The iPad is way more portable to me / for me.

They both need a bag to carry them... its lighter but I dont know if its more portable?? I mean really a 4lb difference!?!?

Apple fanboys are some of the most smug people around. I dropped money on a product I had no clue about? Actually I read a lot on it, and only got it because i knew it could be jail broken. I was just putting out the limitations and how you actually are affected by them. And there are a lot of people coming inhere to see if it's worth buying. So yeah, my opinion matters on that. But hey, keep bin a fanboy thinking nothing is wrong, and that the device is perfect. Just remember the people who complain and demand more is where apples iPhone innovation like being late on everything from multitasking to cut and paste comes from.

It has nothing to do with being "fanboys". All of the complaints you have about it are all things that you would have known about already if you had truly done some research before you bought it. So you either didn't really do enough research or you went ahead and bought it anyway and then started to complain about limitations you knew it had before you bought it.

You know you're not going to find a whole lot of agreement here on your opinion but it's fine if it's not for you. I just hope others reading this that don't own one understand that it is still a worthwhile device for a lot of people. I have plenty of laptops from windows based ones to both 13 and 17 inch matchbooks. This is totally different. While this is not an always with me device, it is a travel companion as well as a relax on the couch and surf device. At that degree it is excellent. While the 13" macbook pro is nice, it is nowhere near as small and comfy to use while reclined or on the move and it's a lot more expensive. Sure it does more but it's an apple to an orange. iPad is what it is, an in between device which does it's job well..

To me, the safari app which im posting from now is worth the price of admission alone. Throw in uber battery life, netflix, abc, kindle and iBooks(if you're into that), goodreader for PDF viewing separate from your computer screen, the games, mail, and host of future apps not even developed yet.... It's a winner for a lot of people. Plus it still amazes me how powerful it really is for how darn thin it is.

Why are you fueling this moron, he's not From Japan, and I doubt he has an iPad and why would you buy a product you didn't have an understanding of? Kill the thread he's an antagonistic jerk with no point. Let's go argue with a bright person that simply has a different, but intelligent opinion.

Oh what short memories we have here at MR

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F9E2JCtWzk8

He fooled a lot of people with those antics. Had them thinking their "cheap laptop" was worthless and the iPad would fullfull their every need. lol

I know what I bought and I'm straight. Just saying.

Some interesting back and forth in the thread, but I haven't seen anyone address his first sentence, "I thought the jailbreak would make this awesome ..."

It has been jailbroken for, what ... a week? Let the community have some time to really open things up before judging that a failure.

Also, you want way more ram, bigger screen, while at the same time you want to make it more portable and cost $200 less? I am confused.

i prefer the ipad at home for light email, couchsurfing, moviewatching and reading in bed.
part of the apeal is its more compact then a notebook so you can easily set it down on a couch or a coffee table. also the battery life makes it more mobile even at home. the quick startup time makes it also quite nice for quick email checks or internet checks.

i also can see myself walking to a nice spot on a remote beach where the sand would kill a notebook and use it for surfing (the internet, not the waves).

also with it being small I always have it in my car. the small size allows me to hide it and the long batteryu life has me not being nervous about running out of power all the time. I wouldn't do that with a MBP.

but yes, it does nothing a iphone/notebook combo couldn't do as well. it just does it more convenient and worry free.

also here it THE only tru advantage i can see over a MBP/iPhone: put the iPad in a ziplock bag (the thin easy see thru ones) and watch movies in a hot tub or surf the web while you are soaking......
