I live in France and we have 3G network since Q4 2005. In UK and Italy since 2003. So what?

BTW I confirm what a friend (who is working for a phone retailler) told me: iPhone is too large :(

As a proof, people don't want to walk in the street with a 30Gb iPod because the device is too large. They do prefer iPod nano so far. And if you consider the iPhone even bigger than a 30Gb iPod... so.

i walk around with my 30 gig ipod in my pocket all the time. i've used my roomates nano, and it's smaller, but i would say both work in my pocket.

I think it being large is a good thing. Thin phones such as the RAZR are awkward to hold.

you will have to explain how the razr is awkward to hold. The razer is really wide for a cell phone. Most cell phones are narrow than the razr. The length of the razr when open and in talk mode is going to longer than the iPhone.

The razr is one of the wides cell phones out there really the only phones that are larger in that way are the smart phones.

The only time I really experience what I mentioned is when texting other people. I just prefer something meatier.

This is a fact. Four years ago, the most advanced smartphone ever, Sony-Ericsson P800, failed to be a mass product because it was too large. Same thing will happen to Apple iPhone :(

The P800 wasn't too large. It was too UGLY. It looked like a blue brick. That's one major difference with the iPhone. Second, smartphones are increasing in popularity and the tendency is towards somewhat bigger phones. Third, the iPhone is more than a phone. People all seem to forget that. It's a phone & ipod in one. If you want a small phone, you buy a small phone. If you want an iPod and phone in one, you buy the iPhone. It;s about teh size of an iPod.

a lot of us really do not have 2.
What
And for me my iPod is to large for an object
is
Any one who is like me in that case would know that this phone is 2 large for them.
with
Top it off the iPhone is to wide
all
the only difference between the 2 is the iPhone is 0.4 inches longer than the 30gig iPod.
the
and from the iPod test I can tell you that it is just way to large for my taste.
2/to/too?

The 30 GB ipod is larger than the nano because it has a HARD DRIVE in it.

And the iPhone.. now whining about size?

WTF? What do you want? A phone so small that you can't even see who you are calling? Or can't see when you're flipping through albums? Seriously, for every innovative product that comes out there are a thousand, make that a million 'critics' who seem to be better at designing phones themselves.

I have always wanted a phone, a photo management tool and an ipod in one.. this is it, and much more of course. And thankfully, it's a good size so i can bloody see the videos, pictures, etc.

PS - Why don't you all complain about how big Digital SLR cameras are? How about a nikon d50 that fits on your pinkie finger? Ooooh.. that would make everybody drool.. but try using the bloody thing!

Personally I like a good old flip phone, Something that fits in the pocket and does not feel awkward against the face.

My Dream Apple Combination wud be a 60 GB WideScreen iPod(with all the features of iPhone sans the phone) with an ultra small iPhone Nano. And both of them not costing more than 600$ together. I`d buy em without any second thoughts et all.

From what I can tell its no bigger than an SLVR. I have no problem with mine. Apart from the damaged speaker

Quickly! Email Apple and alert them of this FACT so they don't make a mistake.

I'll wait here and keep guard until you return.

I just called Steve. He told me the second generation iPhone will have 300GB HD, 12" multi-touch screen, fully functional Mac OS X 10.10, A3 printer and scanner, Fax, size of 1"X1"X0.2" and will be free with a free tariff for 24 months contract and 5000 free minutes.

What exactly do you want? Nothing comes for free and for each added option, space and money is required. Sit back, relax and wait for the damn thing to hit the streets. :)

Rubbish - 3G is only really starting to come into its own. I pick up a new phone every year and my N73 is the first one where I've bothered getting a 3G handset or card and it was an afterthought. There's still not enough compelling content and the networks (aside from T-mobile) need to sort out their data rates. In all honesty, until very recently, it was 3G handsets which were too big to be attractive for the features they offered.

I'm in Europe and the problem with the P800/P900 (which I owned) was that it was bulky. The iPhone isn't. It's thin and that's the difference - it's also probably less likely to crash regularly which is what narked me with my p800. Looking at my current N73 and the iPhone pictures side by side, the iPhone looks far more sleek and pocketable.

My last 2 phones (N70, and 6680) have had 3G too, but I don't use it. Not with the current price plans from Vodafone - the last time I tried using it (and not even heavily) my monthly bill came to 300 euros, far more than how much the phone cost me. I know the networks here are very disappointed with the take-up of 3G, I can only assume they don't use (or have to pay for!) their own network.

I used to have a Motorola V50 which I loved the size of, but if you need email, web usage etc. you can't do it well in that form factor.

IMO, the two biggest mistakes Apple are making with the iPhone are:
- they're pricing it too high, so people assume it's designed to compete with smartphones aimed at the business/enterprise market, when I believe it's more an (expensive) phone aimed at the huge consumer market.
- they called it the iPhone, instead of a name indicative of a portable computer with a phone built in.

Here in Europe (UK, Germany, France, Italy, ...) people hate large phones. What about in the USA?

Perhaps... but I can tell you that in Asia the trend is the larger the better now. Personally, I don't look just look a the phones size but the relation with the screen. i.e. Nokia 8800 I don't like because its such a small screen for the size. The iPhone I think is perfect size but then again I'm not the ones who keep my phone in my pocket. For those that do, that might be a problem. We'll see I guess.

Man, when did full-size iPods become too big to pocket? Wasn't even the original iPod pocketable, hence the tagline 'a thousand songs in your pocket?'

I missed that memo. And to think, I've been cayrying my big old 30gb 3rd gen iPod around with me at all times all these years. What a sucker I am!

The main reason the minis/nanos sell so well is because they the cheapest ipods that come with a screen. Most people have small music libraries and don't need to larger capacity of the hard-drive based iPods. Why pay more money for more space if you aren't going to use it anyway?

I think the iPone has a nice blend of size and features. The price is (might be?) the problem. That and Cingular in the US.

Then don't buy it! Why post this? Do you think Steve himself is going to read it and all of sudden redesign the iphone just because you don't like the size?

Face it, all mobile phones are a pain to carry around, especially for men. Most of us rely on some kind of a holster anyway. If Apple or someone else comes up with a really slick one for the iPhone, then size is no problem.

Give it some time and it will be even better. The thing is, I wouldn't want it much smaller since you want to have a big screen - there has to be a trade off at some point.

D

It's true that there has to be a minimum size for it to be useful, but a huge phone that won't even fit in a pocket isn't much use either.

I tend to agree with the people who think the iPhone is a bit too large for comfortable use. I like small phones myself.

for those intrested

my input from having been allowed to actually see the iphone up close and personal. it is not too big. it is pretty much the same as the razr. almost an inch taller, and not at all noticably wider. the pictures on the apple page are actual size, print it out cut it out, and put it up to 90% of phones ive seen here in the USA, and it will seem quite comparable, not at all overly bulky.
as someone earlier here said. i am also going to personally wait till the nano version. All i really want is an ipod video/phone. let me play movies, music and my sell, thats it. make it the size of a nano, i will buy same day. regardless of almost anyhting else. just do all 3 well

This is why mobile phone market is quite different in Europe. We do prefer small phones. Here in Europe we have 3G network in every countries since 2 years and even our 3G phones are small. iPhone has a too large form factor for our customer requirements.

You may be right. Notice that Apple is not selling the iPhone in Europe until after it has been out in the US for about a year. By then there will be another phone.

In my opinion you if you are going to compare the size of the iPhone, you cant compare it with the rest of the wireless industry. You are comparing apples and oranges if you do, even though they are fruits.

In the keynote Jobs is clearly out to target the Smartphones sector of the wireless industry, so it would only be fair to compare it them. As of right now the iPhone is not that big at all, it is decently sized and well designed.

To the OP, the reason why the Sony Ericson P800 flopped is not because of the size. If you were around when the phone came out or even got a good look at one yourself, the phone was also decently sized. The problem with that damn phone was that it ran for 1000 USD that no carrier wanted to carry it! The phone was just too expensive for any ordinary people to buy! It soon became a boutique item that even today that line of phones are still sold at mostly boutique stores.
