when i was in college a couple years back a cop actually hit a student who was crossing at a cross walk. this didnt even happen during a pursuit or anything.... he just wasnt paying attention. haha!

I have a buddy who was driving in Philly behind a cop. The cop didn't have his lights on. The cop took a left hand turn and since my friend was going in the same direction he took a left right behind him. Immediately the cop put his sirens on and pulled over my friend! Evidently it was a "no turning" lane and even though the cop turned it was illegal for my friend to do it. Nice ticket - not worth fighting for him (and he's a lawyer).

Of all the cities I've lived in Philly has the most arrogant and abusive cops I've ever seen. Maybe I would understand it if they kept the place safe - but they don't even do that.

I played in an illegal poker game with a cop once. And he was cheating. When he lost, (yep, still took him out, even with his cheating:cool: ) he tried to get all up in my face and intimidate me. I just ignored him and got back to the game. That would have been awesome, though. A cop playing in an illegal poker game, starts a fight with another guy. He was looking at all kinds of trouble.

I've seen plenty of other cops breaking the law all the time. My brother in law was a Deputy Sheriff, and the stories he would tell about what cops get away with are truely frightening.

Yikes...playin with fire....I wouldn't mess with that if I lived in the USA.

half a bowl is one thing...but goin down for a sheet can lead to serious time....

Not a cop but I live right near the NYFD training academy. Damn firemen run red lights, drive down one way streets and harass women outside the 7-11.

Bastards think they walk on water since 9/11.

I'm certainly not a cop but I just assumed that there was a reason that they would go through red lights with their lights on and then turn them off afterwards... I can't really *think* of a reason but I just always thought there was one... surely there is an officer or two on the boards that could enlighten us.

I work with the cops, mind you, I'm not actually a cop, but I pick up the phone (so the real cops can continue sleeping)

Anyhoo, when cops need to get somewhere quick (let's say a burgely(sp?)) you don't want to advertise your coming with whaling sirens. However, you do want to pass the roadcrossings quick and safe, Therefor they put on their lights.

Also, here in The Netherlands it's practically illegal for cops to turn on the sirens unless they get permission from the dispatcher.

Oh, and that question about snorting speed? Only illegal whilst driving.

I don't have a problem with police officers speeding, or going through red lights. Sometimes they're on the way to a location where driving with lights and sirens would cause undue attention.

I do have a problem when they ignore red light runners...

you think its ok for police to run a red light with no sirens on just for the hell of it?

i went to high school many many years ago with a kid who was killed when his car was hit by a police car going 95mph without his sirens or lights on... not trying to preach here... just stating a fact...

unless they are chasing someone... i say it BS if they just blow through a light...

I agree. I believe that police are here to enforce the law and to help keep our communities safe.

They have been afforded some powers, and my hope would be that they use it responsibly and legally.

I've seen one pull over a cute girl just because she's cute. And drink while on call. And confiscate fireworks from some kids, then use them himself. And get away with speeding by flashing his badge.

Probably some others illegal things too.

If it's for a donut break, I could try and understand.

besides the usual speeding, running lights with no reason, etc... i saw some cops oggling some college girls in nyc, over the top, staring and making faces. now, not illegal really, and they are human, but what is most ironic is that in nyc, the cop motto or whatever is:

C aring
P rofessionalism
R espect

and it was on the cop car right near where they were standing. just a hilariously sad irony. oh well.

Thats funny. A policeman friend ("associate" may be a better word) of mine has done that several times. Another favorite past time is to just pull people over for no reason at all on slow nights. He's made people do the roadside sobriety tests just because he was board. Jerks...

To be fair, I saw the same cop give several drunks a ride home instead of to jail. And stop a bunch of thugs from harassing some girls. And nail the son of the local college police chief for drinking in public and attempting to use his dad as cover for his actions. And risk his own life to chase down violent criminals. And put a private security guard in his place for trying to act like a cop.

Cops are just people too. Some are bad, some are good, most are a mixture depending on the day and their mood. A lot of it has to do with their 'first impression' of you. One of my buddies got a DUI one time, and besides his abusive behaivor, the cops were also put off by his 'instant a**hole, just add alcohol' keychain. Damn that police report was funny to read!

I should correct my post by saying blow through the red light - after - stopping to ensure no one was coming the other way. Not just ignore the light completely.

i understand this is going to happen from time to time... but at least put the lights on so others are aware that a copper is coming through the intersection... a couple a siren bursts would help as well... then shut them off...

i just have to wonder though... as many times as i see this happen, what is the ratio of hmmm lets not wait for this light to i am actually on my way to help someone out.

In a way, I enjoy cops breaking minor traffic laws -especially on the Interstate. They are almost always traveling faster than the speed limit, so you let them pass then follow behind them at a good clip.

The downside of this, and to some degree a potential excuse for seemingly reckless driving by the cops - is that many drivers tense up seeing a cop car, and tend to drive really slow and self-consciously. This can sometimes create odd traffic snarl-ups, which piss off cops and civilians alike.

I'm sure there are plenty of good cops out there. My "jerks" comment was aimed at the ones like in my post. I do appreciate the tough work they do. The scale does seem to tilt in the "jerk" direction though, when I think of my experiences with police officers. Of all the police officers I know or have met, I can think of only one that took his job totally seriously and was an all around good person, and would NEVER do anything out of line. Thats what a policeman should be, and its sad that I've only ever seen 1.

Yeah, a friend of ours who is a cop was speeding.. to get to Dunkin Donuts.

He even admitted to it, too.

It's a tough job. You couldn't pay me enough to do it.

To the OP, I used to live in South Bend and was proud to call several SB and St. Joe County Officers friends. We worked together on a number of youth programs. I have two thoughts.

1) There are a lot of spoiled brats at ND. No, not all of them, but more then any other campus I have ever spent time on. A lot of these kids come from the east and west coast and get a bit of a culture shock. South Bend is not the "Big City". Sorry Junior. Telling the officer that daddy is a big shot lawyer or politician in Boston might help you in the court room, but not on the street. If you smart off to an officer, you shouldn't be shocked when you get a ticket instead of a warning.

2) A lot of police officers come from a military background. These guys are trained to be agressive. They are also trained to protect themselves. Kind of foolish to get in the face of someone who is a former Marine Hand-to-Hand Instructor (which one of my friends was...) and expect him to take it from you.

Sorry to get a bit off topic, but your post bugged me.

Yes, I have riden with a cop who just wanted to see how fast their car would go (135).

in my town of just under 2000 people, when the cop, police chief, or city council member/mayor (in the city car) is likely to be:

1) your friend
2) your spouse
3) your parent
4) your child
5) your cousin
6) your in law
7) your hs teacher
69) your next date (or ex who is intolerable but likes to come over for the occassional sleepover)
9) you

then yes, i see cops do stupid things all the time...nobody is going to turn them in

sure, he he

but that "california stop" (which basically amounts to rolling over a stop zone at around 5-10 mph) is common among all the cops here...male, female, old, young, short, tall, high ranking, low ranking

...i wonder if we californians invented it? ;)

I have seen cops speed run stop signs red lights and so on before.

The speeding one with no lights is quite offen they are going to a call or going after a speeder and are blowing by the non target cars catching up to the speed to turn on the lights.

As for a good cop store that involved the cop speeding with no lights deals with when my brother went off the road and rolled his car (car was total brother walk way with a scratch on his hand and on his foot). The cop who went out to is went out there doing 120 (lights on I believe) and he took my brother about 70 miles back to ablien TX where I was heading to pick him up and take him back to Tech. But on the trip back to ablien the cop was doing 90 mph and didnt turn on his lights. His reason for speeding was he knew my brother just really wanted to Dennies and wait for me to get there and pick him up. Mostly he knew my brother just wanted to be out of the cop car and that he unconfitible. Getting him to Denny's ment for my brother that some one was on the way and what not.

Nice cop.

Oh also from the same State Trooper who took my brother back to town. "When a cop is writing you a ticket just you rememeber that they enjoy speedding as well". This same Trooper stated part of his reason for joining the force was so he could drive fast. But that being said general speaking cops are very helpful and do put there lives on the line. Yes you have some bad apples but for the most part they deserve respect. You know they dont get any during the day.
