Correct.

Frustrating that so many pretend this isn't the case...
No, what's frustrating is how few people care. I keep seeing comments like "I don't have anything to hide" and "If you haven't done anything wrong you have nothing to fear". If a company is willing to spy on you why do you think that they will ethical about not distorting or changing the information if it's to their economic advantage?

ArsTechnica: Evernote apologises for its new privacy policy, but...
http://arstechnica.co.uk/business/2016/12/evernote-admits-it-communicated-poorly-about-privacy/

Quote:
So Evernote will in fact be starting its machine learning program in January, and humans will be reading notes with permission (which was true before, too). It's unclear what exactly has been delayed or changed other than how sorry everybody feels. In addition, the company has not actually changed its Privacy Policy. In that policy, they still state that employees read users' notes without permission for undefined "troubleshooting" reasons.

Which suggests that EN can easily give the same files to others. Perhaps it's time to be concerned about making EN support requests, since the staff may be prompted to read private user files, without permission or notification.

Also, what about legal discovery process etc? Tricky when the facility has the keys. And with all that advanced search capability, what's to stop "government actors" from live trawling for various words & phrases etc, as they did with Yahoo?

Of course, I doubt that a mere Privacy Policy has ever prevented any of that.

Yeah, I just moved everything into Apple Notes, and out of Evernote. It is a fairly simple export process, but a bit time consuming if you have a lot of notebooks (each notebook needs to be exported then imported separately). Notes is simplistic, but does everything I need it to.

I setup an 'On My Mac' section for things I do not want to sync, or be online, plus you can password protect individual notes. I am fairly certain since the new Notes used CloudKit everything that syncs through iCloud is encrypted. At the very least, I know that the one thing Apple does well is privacy.

There is an inherent flaw in how we as end-users are able to protect our data.
Truth is: We've lost total control. We usually have no control over where our data is stored and all those EULAs and privacy policies are changed arbitrarily.

So you decide to use a service one day, you've read their privacy policy and the next day it reads a completely different thing. Sure, you've been notified, but you're already locked into that solution and invested a lot of money to use it. So you all of a sudden have to agree to some weird passage that allows them to do whatever with your data/information, pass it on to sub-contractors and third parties, etc.

That includes Apple with their almost monthly new TOS. How am I supposed to read that 100 page stuff and ask someone with legal expertise what this actually means for me. It seems they almost expect you to have a lawyer at your disposal! Maybe I should employ one full time? Oh... Wait... No... I don't earn enough by faaaaaar to be able to do that.

There should be a worldwide law that demands privacy by design and default and allows the customer to keep his service without agreeing to new policies (albite with less features since certain functions might not be covered).

I'm sick and tired of trying to run around to protect my bits and piece.

So, in other words, the TOS has become a POS. ;)

And yet, when someone's note ends up wrong from a glitch or deleted, etc., they won't remember this complaining and they'll complain "why didn't Evernote do something?" Lol...

PS I'm against the old policy.

It's not like employees aren't already using the system to take notes with and couldn't use their own to check the machine learning.

These companies keep picking away, and fortunately people are still paying attention. Screw them all. I don't do social media, I have nothing voluntarily to do with Google (even searches), I don't use third party email clients or messaging apps, and I have Little Snitch on lockdown against all but necessary outbound traffic.

What email and messaging apps you use then?

I just moved to One Note a couple of days ago because of this. Can't say I'm completely happy with One Note either - it crashed yesterday! and I seem to have lost my tags… but it took so long to transfer everything I'm going to try it out for a few weeks and see if I like it.
[doublepost=1481987194][/doublepost]I think I'll try importing into Apple Notes too - looks a bit basic but could be faster than One Note

Well, just like testing of software and even hardware goes internally, not all issues are or even can be found.

I gotta say, I think Apple Notes is pretty robust now, especially on iOS since iOS9. The simple drawing/sketching/writing tools, attachments, inline photos, and checklist support, and the Siri ability especially--they've all made AN a good alternative for me. I use Siri with it now for making lists instead of reminders. It's super quick since you can add multiple items to a list on a note in a single voice command, instead of one at a time like in reminders. And now since MacOS Sierra/iOS10, you can share notes to allow others on your team to edit, so it does 100% of what I need it to do. Of course, it's not EN or ON (I was using ON before), but I've found the more basic organizing approach has made made my notes more disciplined. I know I sound like a sales guy, but it works for me. Let's just hope Apple sticks to their privacy guns.

Too late!!!

I've already deleted all my notes and wiped the app.
If for any reason in the future I find that my notes still on their server, there will come a law suit.
