Mine is going back tomorrow.
It's the third MBP for me with severe static/noise coming from the SSD and I just can't take it anymore. And it's really making me sad, because I really like the new keyboard after a day now and this screen / speakers ... *sigh*

Well that’s what puzzles me. I can use my old MBP comfortably at 60% brightness but I need to bring it up to 80% on the 16” to reach the same brightness

Is it an effect of tru-tone? That certainly alters the brightness as well.

I was curious what everyone thinks about the new 16".

  • What spec did you order?
  • What are you upgrading from?
  • What kind of work do you do on it?
  • How is it performing for you so far?

  • What spec did you order? I've had the 16" for two days now.
  • What are you upgrading from? My prior laptop was the 2018 15".
  • What kind of work do you do on it? Large amount of emails, drafting operating procedures, presentations, creating videos, PhotoShop, LightRoom, streaming, etc.
  • How is it performing for you so far? I tested the laptop in the Apple store for two days before deciding to upgrade (FYI, use the trade-in program if you can. It's worth it). The first item I tested was the keyboard. I spent a good 10-15 minutes typing and then typing on the older models to compare. There is a noticable difference in travel and there is difference in the spacing between the keys. I found myself making less errors (I type about 100 words a minute) on the new 16" keyboard. Performance wise everything is the same. There isn't much difference between the models that is only a year apart. However, I do like the ESC and fingerprint buttons being separate. My one grip is I wish the made the trackpad smaller. There is no reason for it to be so large It should be cut inside the Command buttons. As for the screen. The additional real estate is not noticeable at this point. Perhaps when I start using 3-4 programs at once it may come into play. But, remember it's only larger by .6" which isn't much.
My suggestion: If you're interested in the laptop test it at the store (if you can). One of the offices is two blocks from an Apple store so it's easy for me. With the price tag of 2,500+ (with taxes...because tax is money too!) it's a steep price for such a decision. The last time I want to test is the battery. My 2018 15" did not last more than six hours off battery, and this is performing email/browsing/etc. Nothing processor intensive.

The screen on this thing is not 500 bits as Apple claims, whether that’s a software or hardware issue remains to be seen. Multiple YouTube reviewers and myself have noticed this. In fact, my 16” screen is dimmer than my 2014 13”
Is it plugged in? Default is to dim display when running on battery.

I tried one at my local store. Its big and heavy (thats what she....).

Sadly, not for me as I travel a lot and this beast is heavy. As nice as it is, I will wait for the MBA or 14"... I suspect the 14" will be heavy too going by this bump from 15". Every gram counts in my case, then again I never needed the power that this 16" has I don't edit video or audio or game.

A good move from Apple, looking forward to spring ;)

Well according to Kuo, it is staying at 13. So likely just adding the keyboard, if he is correct, so wouldn't get any bigger or heavier.

Apple is constrained by the limits of technology and physics; there is only so much they can do. They went too far on slimness with the last iteration. Now, they listened to their pro users instead of the "prosumer" and built something that's suitable for real work again and can take a beating.

I say Kudos to them and thank you. After years of suffering with a 2017 15", I am thrilled with this upgrade.

2016 MBP 2.4gHz 8-core 32GB RAM 8GB Video...

Crashes literally every time I close the cover to put it to sleep. I've had it 36 hours now and it must have crashed a dozen times. Yesterday I left the office with 100% battery, this morning I pull it out of my bag and it's hot. I open it up and yep, it crashed again. When I get it booted, it's at 33% battery.

I've installed MS Office and a few other minor applications. I don't see anything that is preventing it from going to sleep, and this crash-on-sleep issue happened BEFORE I installed any software.

I'll be speaking to Apple Support today. I'm ready to wipe the machine and try a rebuild, but ... what a pain.

Other than that... SHOCKED at the quality of the speakers. I moved my Bose to another office. Beautiful screen, wonderful fit and finish, and I love the keyboard. I might type a TINY bit faster with the old keyboard, but it was loud as heck and I had failing keys despite being fastidiously clean. Yesterday was the first day in years that I wasn't scolded for typing too loud next to the Polycom microphone in the conference room -- and I typed through the entire meeting.

Mine is due to arrive tomorrow and there is a temptation to return it, only due to cost!

So my machine with 10% discount and AppleCare comes to ~£2,800. This is the 8 core 2.3/16GB RAM/1TB SSD/5500M 4GB upgraded base model.

I have the option to also get the XPS 15 8 core 2.4/32GB RAM/ 2T SSD/4k OLED/GTX 1650 with 4 years cover (inc accidental) for £2,577 (and that is without negotiating down price, just the online price tag).

To spec the equivalent MacBook in UK would come to around £3,700 (including 10% discount + 3 year AppleCare).

So, is MacOS, 16:10 screen aspect ratio, far superior speaker and mic worth the premium?

Hmmm

I owned a Dell XPS 15 for a year and a half and with the number of Windows driver/update and Dell firmware issues I dealt with, I’d absolutely say the extra cost of the Mac was worth it to me. The XPS is awesome though if you can get one without any hardware or software issues

True, although it is safe to say MacBook's these days are not safe from software issues (Catalina anyone?) and historically, hardware issues (speakers, keyboards, screen).

Just bizarre how big of a price difference there is to be honest.

That gave me a smile: my late 2016 15" MBP with touchbar, 16 GB and 512 GB SSD is worth 340 euro using the trade-in program in Europe. I was curious and tried the US website and it gave me a quote of 0.

I have the same generation laptop, only difference being that my SSD is 1TB, and the quote I got to trade mine in was $1,060.

Probably a good idea for you to try the site again if you are seriously wanting to trade in your current machine.

I am not a Pro but love the new 16" MacBook Pro. I love being able to use Apple's latest and greatest to fully enjoy all the efforts and contributions that the Pros worldwide have made to make the computer what it is today.

  • What spec did you order?
  • What are you upgrading from?
  • What kind of work do you do on it?
  • How is it performing for you so far?
  • Base model in space Gray
  • Upgrading from a 2015 13" MBP (and also kinda upgrading from a 2019 13" that I used for a week until I returned it and got the 16")
  • I'm a Computer Science student, so coding and running VMs, and other basic tasks like writing essays and light video editing.
  • Very well. I'm so happy with this computer and I'm growing to love it more every day. I don't think I've been this attached to a Mac before haha. It's flying through everything without a problem and so I couldn't be more pleased with the performance so far.

So I was being a bit of a jerk. But it just seems to me like this machine is pretty much a wish list from everything this board has been asking for for years, including me. The keyboard alone is worth it -- yes, it might be a little slower to type on than a butterfly, but its vastly more comfortable. More importantly, it's not going to fail on me with the slightest crumb, like the 4 butterflies before it. Even the extra horizontal screen real estate is nice. I am genuinely thrilled with the machine after only 24 hours.

FYI I put "prosumer" in quotes to distinguish from an actual prosumer; a "prosumer" vs. a prosumer is someone who *thinks* they need the latest and greatest technology, and too much money to spend on it, but really just browses the web, posts on twitter, and edits some video twice a year.

Where do you see people complaining in this thread? I read people posting their feedback on the new machine. In regards to labeling consumers, I don't tell others how to spend their money.

I've only been using mine for a few hours. It's interesting. I got completely used to the butterfly keyboard, using it for three years. Two seconds on this new keyboard and I'm totally over the butterfly keyboard. This is significantly better.

Otherwise, colors look great, computer is noticeably faster than my previous one, it isn't getting too warm. :)

Unfortunately I am noticing the cool whine/squeaking noise. All computers have this to a degree, but on my past MBP I could only hear it if I put ear up next to it. This is more noticeable. So we'll see. I'm picky about these kinds of things. One of my friends has an MSI laptop that has that noise to a horrible degree; I don't see how he can stand to use it. This does seem to be SSD-related.

I am seeing a very bright area in the middle of the LCD on mine. Especially apparent when scroll on white pages (like MacRumors forums in light mode)! Anyone else having this defect?

My 2018 15" MBP doesn't have anything like this.

I've just ordered mine

  • Base model in Space Gray customized with 1TB SSD
  • Base MBP 15" Mid2010 + 8GB RAM + 256SSD
  • Now I'm compute science teacher, so development, vm, video editing, and, of course, other basics like writing, keynotes, etc.
Is supposed doesn't arrive until Dec 11th, but I'm impatient after almost 10 years since I bought previous one.
