The physical remote has an IR emitter in it so it can control standard TV/audio devices by sending out an IR code, like the majority of remote controls do. The phone has no such IR capability. So there is no way for Apple to add the capability you want to the phone, it doesn't have the hardware. If it was possible, obviously they'd have done it ages ago.

Except the Apple TV base doesn't have an IR emitter either. In many cases it wouldn't help if it did as I think it's likely many people stuff it in a cupboard or behind the TV or somewhere else which isn't line-of-sight to the TV IR receiver.

IR is old tech and although older phones such as the palm treos did have IR support, I doubt apple will ever add that on the iphones. On the other hand, most recent TV models are actually smart TVs and can be fully remote controlled via Wifi using a 3rd party app, except of course for turning the TV on/off, so Apple could easily add support for controlling smart TVs over Wifi.

Not entirely true. There are many apps on the app store which can control your tv's volume. I've downloaded one which works on my Panasonic tv from 2010. Doesn't need an IR emitter as it controles the volume over wifi.
Yeah My Tifi is one such app, which I use to control my 2014 Samsung smart TV from my iphone or even my apple watch. The only thing you can’t do is turn on the TV, but everything else works fine.

The ONE bug I wish apple would fix, which has been in every single version of IOS for years now is the ability to add text into the "notes" field when you are creating a new contact. Try it... I'll wait... The field isn't accessible. You can not put focus there to type. You have to create the contact, save it, then reopen and edit it to add a notes comment.

This infuriates me as I always want to enter info about where and why I met someone when I add them.

Damn, I was really hoping for more Haptic Touch shortcuts for the XR.
With all the talks of Apple completely doing away with 3D Touch, I really hope they implement more Haptic Touch shortcuts too. I heavily use 3D Touch, I’ll be sad to see it go... if it does.

So... Am I the only one bothered by the lack of consistent placement on "new design" vs "old design"? Why are the first two comparisons old on left and new on right, then the last two new on left and old on right?

Anyway, not a bad set of mini updates... can't wait for the AirPods with Hey Siri, though.

iOS always has something broken. Always a work in progress.
Which is, and has been, pretty much the case with any software (or even hardware, in a sense).

Waiting for the devs to explore the build's code. I have a feeling they might uncover some iOS 13 hints...
It would be a bit odd to have that unrelated code in the codebase for iOS 12.2 (short of them laying the groundwork for something and starting to make use of it in some way, but even then it'd be somewhat odd to have it there rather than a separate dedicated iOS 13 code branch that they've already been working on for some time now).

Any changes to Control Center or Settings/Battery to further support the Smart Battery Case (iPhone XS Max)

I’m liking the full screen remote but they need to change the homekit control center look. If remote can be full screen then homekit control center can be full screen or at least have the ability to scroll over to another page of scenes and accessories. I mean 9 accessories per screen and I have 30 accessories makes the top 9 the most important and it just doesn’t work well.
For scenes there are 8 scenes and I have ohhh 30+ scenes. Homekit app needs to be redesigned also. Scenes scrolling over endlessly is bad. There should be a page for all your scenes like how accessories are in a grid and smaller stacked and side by side.

    • HomeKit screen overhaul
    • Better calendar notifications
    • Clip board that can hold more than one bit of text at a time (also viewable

The remote uses IR to do that, which famously your phone lacks.
Not completely true. On modern smart tvs it can be done over wifi. Because of that, I am able to control the volume and everything else except power on/off on my samsung smart tv from 2014 from my iphone or apple watch using a 3rd party app. I’m sure apple could easily integrate the functionality into their remote app.

That may be a problem with your device and not necessarily the software. I am able to use the notes field just fine when creating a contact on my iphone Xs and so was I on my previous iphone, a 6s, before I got the XS. I can type in there when creating a new contact and also when editing an existing contact.

Yeah, but not that IR is required to control the TV volume because modern smart tv sets allow that to be done over Wifi.

It is interesting that they changed the AirPlay icon in Control Center to the original one instead of the "speaker" one for some things (is it only when AirPlaying to a TV? Then that makes sense). Not sure why AirPlay got a new icon a few years ago anyway... They had the same one as early as I can remember (at least as far back as iOS 6), but iTunes and iOS Music got the new one in some places, yet the Mac has it for Apple TV setup... Hm.

I am left with a red 1 on Settings Icon

Any ideas how to get ríd of it ?
Either you have an available software update or you need to verify or update security settings for your apple id (system asks for that occasionally). Whichever is the case, you will need to open the settings app to find out.

Almost every year an .X update for iOS has included information about the next major version of iOS (or some other Apple product)

Is there a reason why Apple doesn't have a volume up / volume down control on they iPhone Apple TV remote? If I can change the volume with my physical ATV remote, why can't I do it with my iPhone ATV remote?

I would also REALLY like to have a HomePod OS update that allows me to control my ATV by voice - "Hey Siri, turn on Apple TV"

Another Apple product is one thing, a whole new iOS version, that's somwhat different.

Beens happening somewhat more often with some of the more recent updates. Seems like signing out of iCloud and signing back in is something that does the trick.

At the same time many TV sets (even modern ones) aren't smart TV sets.

Nice, but I can't believe they reworked the Apple TV remote layout, but still didn't put in volume controls. If I want to change the volume on my TV, I can use the physical remote, but not the one on my phone? Not cool.
I cant test it now, but im pretty sure that you can control you volume with the iPhones physical buttons, when the app is opened

It depends on your setup. If your TV/soundbar/receiver can be controlled via HDMI CEC, then the IR is not used and the commands are sent via Bluetooth to the Apple TV. Only if your setup doesn't do HDMI CEC does it use the IR transmitter.

You rest your thumb on Touch ID or look at the phone while putting it on the reader. It then automatically pulls up Apple Pay and transmits the info in one go.

Didn’t even know that worked! I would be scared it automatically pays the bill of someone in front of me if I am standing too close tho ...
