Just a day after releasing the iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 updates, Apple has already seeded the first betas of iOS 15.1 and iPadOS 15.1. The new updates reintroduce features like SharePlay, and below, we have a list of what's new.

SharePlay

SharePlay is enabled in the iOS 15.1, iPadOS 15.1, and tvOS 15.1 betas to allow Apple to further work out bugs to get the feature ready to launch. Apple decided to pull SharePlay from the iOS 15 launch because it was not properly functioning and was still riddled with issues.

Available in FaceTime, SharePlay is designed to let users call up their friends and family and then watch TV, watch movies, and listen to music together using neat features like shared playlists and TV show syncing for all users. SharePlay also allows for screen sharing.

If testing goes well, SharePlay could see an official launch in iOS 15.1.

Announce Calls

In the Settings for the Phone app, there's a new icon for the "Announce Calls" setting.

Lossless Audio for HomePod

The HomePod 15.1 beta that accompanies the iOS 15.1 beta adds Lossless Audio and Dolby Atmos with Spatial Audio support to the HomePod and HomePod mini.

Vaccine Cards in Wallet

In iOS 15, verifiable health records can be downloaded and stored in the Health app, and this includes COVID-19 vaccination records and health results. In iOS 15.1, vaccination records are able to be added to the Wallet app so a vaccine card can be provided to businesses, restaurants, venues, and more where vaccines are required for entry.

See our previous article for more details and discussion. Discussion should be limited to the iOS 15 update and political comments will be immediately removed.

Other Features

Know of a feature that we left out? Let us know in the comments.

Do I still need to back all the way out of nested menus before closing the sidebar in Safari for iPadOS?

That's why Apple's value doesn't always rest by working for its users.

How does Apple handle vaccination cards internationally? In Europe, there are now several apps that read and check vaccination certificates and can then be used in everyday life. I'm curious to see whether Apple will also support this important topic outside of the USA.

Apple is probably the only company that could implement something like this worldwide. That's impressive.

No fixes for the Shortcuts app? It is super buggy. I’m surprised that Apple released it in the current state.
I've been using the shortcuts app in iOS 15 since June. Haven't run into any bugs but its certainly a massive app capabilities wise so assume there is some use case that you are running into a bug with? That use case is that? Or what's the bug?

The worst thing about iOS 15 is how you can no longer pull down on notifications to dismiss them. So irritating that they won’t add this back. I keep holding out hope that it’ll be reintroduced on an upcoming beta.

I agree. I just end up waiting until they slide back up, then I pull down and swipe them away. Extra steps now for something that was a one swipe gesture before.

for Europe you can use this solution to get your certificate into the wallet app:

I've said this before. Very much look forward to Shareplay. Will really help providing technical support to my parents. I had to help my mom reset her Facebook password a couple weeks ago. That was torture. One of the most frustrating experiences of my life.

I hope so. I’m already tired of having to use Portrait mode, which works much better than Landscape mode as far as the sidebar goes. In Portrait mode, the sidebar automatically closes when you select a bookmark. If you then reopen the sidebar, it opens up where it was before it closed, so you don’t have to navigate through all the folders again. i still prefer the way it was in iPadOS 14 though.

Funny, I hadn’t even tried portrait. I feel like people in Apple are convinced that people hold their iPads portrait more than they do. For me it’s the rare exception— maybe when I’m taking notes.

I don't think I have any special use-cases. I'm just trying to edit/create shortcuts just like I was on iOS 14. Any shortcut that call another one fails - I've even tried completely rebuilding a few from scratch. The app randomly crashes while I'm editing shortcuts. Dragging and dropping actions don't go into the correct location. Permissions are messed up on existing shortcut and clearing them and re-adding them doesn't always fix the issues. On reddit there are a bunch of complaints in the Shortcuts sub about other things that are broken.
