I just installed iOS 15 beta 5 this morning and my XR feels extremely fast compared to iOS 14. I had this feeling of my phone being destined to be left behind sooner rather than later but currently it’s flying through things that would cause it to hang before. Like task switching, text selection, opening a new browser tab… yes, basic stuff.

I installed the beta over my previous install so everything is intact. Unfortunately some apps still don’t come up in spotlight search so that wasn’t fixed but I’m impressed by the speed overall so far. Feels like an iPhone again.

I thought the bottom bar for Safari makes sense since most phones are much taller nowadays. I don't get why people want to keep the address bar so far on the top.
Years of muscle memory. I just opened Safari on my iPhone, and I realize I hold the device expecting the bar to be at the top.

In any case, I feel like offering people a choice is the best way. More choices in the interface layout is very much appreciated.

Airplay on my iPad mini us a mess. Trying to add multiple sets of Homepods just doesn't work. IOS 14 does it very well, just open the airplay from the now playing in Apple Music app, and you see a list of all Airplay devices, just tap to add them to the currently playing devices. on this Beta, it switches the stream rather than adding it.

The revised Safari design in iOS b6 is much better than its floating predecessor, but it’s really awkward that Cancel sits at the top instead of right of the url field. Cancel is 50 times more useful than the damn mic icon that occupies that spot. There already is a mic icon at the bottom that does the exact same job…

I’ve literally been saying (for years) that browsers should have a user interface with their URL bar at the bottom.

Because it makes sense. It is good design. While holding your device, your thumb can easily reach the bottom of the screen. You hold your device at the bottom, so that’s where our thumbs are. It has NEVER EVER made sense to keep the URL bar at the top, where you can’t hold your device and tap it at the same time or with one hand. It has never made sense.

Years and years of such backwards, stupid design. I’m actually grateful someone finally took note of how much more sense it makes to include it at the bottom. Hopefully this makes other browsers do the same, since I don’t use Safari because it lacks features and is crap compared to the competition.
I’ve always said my thumb is not detachable.
Just because the first device had it that way doesn’t excuse this. That needed to be changed with the iPhone 5.

Missed change (unless I'm stupid and it was changed for beta 5): "drunk" no longer suggests 🥴 as an emoji; it is now accessed via "dizzy"

While it's good that they are offering choices, but it's hard not to think this is a defeat for the new Safari design. I hope they put more effort into it though as I think it's overall better. Still some quirks, but much more comfortable to use.
Personally I love the redesign in beta 6 and I am so glad they tweaked it - while the floating address bar looked nice it unfortunately overlayed the content underneath it so you couldn't interact with content which was frustrating. The latest changes in beta 6 mean you can now swipe between tabs straight from the address bar, and can actually access everything, including bookmarks and tabs straight from the bottom of the screen - it's =fantastic compared to the previous beta versions and the iOS 14 top address bar location.

The only thing I think could still be improved is when you click the address bar it opens up and the Cancel button is sitting lonely at the top right - this is different to every other Safari element including the tabs, bookmarks, share sheet, etc functionality which can all be controlled from the bottom half of the screen.

Ooh, the new tab/menu bar on iPhone is perfect now. I liked the move to the bottom but the old one was unintuitive and confusing, with buttons hidden and just having the tab floating on top of the page content just messed with my mental map of the interface - even though it was simple it was confusing. This new one is spot on.

What I’d like to see now is the option of having Safari on iPad, when it’s in narrow mode (ie les than half the screen), have it work like the iPhone version. Intuitively when it’s in that mode my brain assumes it works like iPhone, but doesn’t.

You’re right, it does lack features, like: mining your data, being bloated & slow, and heating up your laptop like a mutherf*****.

Did b6 break Spatial Audio on iPhone for anyone else? AirPods Pro and Max handle it just fine with iPad Pro M1 and ATV 4K running b6, but with iPhone 12 Pro I just get plain stereo (or at most Atmos without position awareness). Restart didn’t help.

You guys top or bottom

Definitely a bottom… When it comes to my browser anyway. I love my 12 Pro Max but putting in addresses in the address bar was always a pain. Even with the bugs that the implementation has had in the betas, I have enjoyed having it on the bottom from day one.

I agree that it’s more polished now and better than ever. The swiping between tabs was there before but is much more clear and easy to use now.

Beta 5 was missing the icons for emojis on the keyboard and would not replace words with emojis. Beta 6 brought them back.

Oh FFS. I admit I was one of the ones who hated the bottom bar and gave a little cheer when I learnt they'd given you the option to choose. So I installed it just now, moved the bar back to the top, sighed a sigh of relief... and promptly went to the bottom of the page to get to the address bar. What's a girl to do?:D

My biggest complaint is the change to the icon/group spacing on my iPad (5th gen). I spent a lot of time arranging them just how I wanted (on a page and between pages), but now it’s all changed. I suspect it’s related to the icon size option, but I was fine with it. Now I’m just pissed off.

Just ditch the half dozen or so iPad home screen widgets that Apple stomped down our throats with brute force, and the grid will return to its normal 6*5 layout. The second you add a widget to the screen it switches to 6*4 and wrecks everything again. iPadOS 15 widgets do to your icon layout what bowling balls do to pins. The downside with a widget-free 6*5 layout is of course that it’s a bit like going back to iPadOS 13 since Apple ripped the Today View column out, but you can still swipe it in from the left.
