And here I say it again, how is iMessage this far behind when it’s this critical to their platform strategy. And then it allows stupid things - like viewing the original message after editing.

Exactly what value does that offer?

They are cementing in their demise.
I actually kind of saw this coming. I think the premise is that someone could use the edit feature with nefarious intentions. For example, I could send my landlord an iMessage asking “Do I still owe rent for this month, if so, how much do I owe you? ” and they could respond with “Yes, all $1600” and then I could go back and edit the message to read “Did you get my envelope with $1600 in cash to pay rent this month?” Then when I’m in court facing eviction I can use that as evidence to show the judge I paid in cash and he acknowledged receipt.

May not be the best example, but I think that type of potential scenario is why they’d want to have some kind of edit history. If it was an honest error and you didn’t want them to see what you sent at all (if they didn’t already read it) then just unsend and resend a new message.

this is the first ios release ive been looking forward to in a while. so tempted to just install the beta

I don't see the update at all, I'm with the previous version 20A5312j.
Any idea why is not visible for me?

So why still no option to delete a imessage?
It happens alot you send the wrong message to the wrong person!
Editing that message is not an option as they can still read the original.
It's a fine line.

Imagine the following scenario. Your brother sends you a message "You're a jerk!"
You read it when it arrives, but they delete it, or edit it to say "You're great!"

Without edit history there's no way you can tell your mom (or in a more serious case the proper authorities) what you saw, and the sender can claim innocence, unless you screenshot the result.

I recognise the wrong recipient issue is real, bur we've lived with the consequences of that since SMS was invented.

It's supposed to be a chat app, not a documentation system. If it is supposed to be a documentation system, they need to build it out that way - including the ability to export chat logs at the very least. I have no idea why they are doing this instead of what would make sense/be immediately comprehensible.

It also means that any textual communications you've had with someone else are automatically legally binding/enforceable documents. That's a HORRIBLE idea/precedent.

To me, editing messages is about editing typos, not ideas. If you change your mind about the content of your earlier message, you make a new message telling about it. I’m glad I can check what was edited.
You clearly have never been bitten by this. I sure have... messages (venting) about work stuff that were supposed to go to a trusted friend ended up going to a coworker, and there was no way for me to fix it. The best I could do? Say "sorry that wasn't intended for you." I lived, but not without excruciating embarrassment.

I mostly use anything BUT iMessage these days for that reason alone. Signal, IG Messenger, TG, WhatApp. I have them all, and Apple is letting iMessage turn into a last resort for me and everyone else. Given the fact that all of the rest of those messenger apps make it possible to communicate with Android people too, we're already at the point where iMessage simply isn't even in the running for group chats almost all of the time.

Again, what value does it provide for the recipient to see that you changed the phrase "dick blood soup" to "duck blood soup?"

The tech that powers iMessage is clearly not scaling out well if this is the best they can do after 11 years. I stand by my criticism, they are flailing in the wind here, and their inaction is cementing in their demise.

I would trade all the new features for a 5x7 home screen.

Every beta I send the suggestion worded slightly differently to just copy/buy Niagra launcher. Would be much better than the current homescreen or app library. maybe don't do exactly that, but its a start in the right direction.

I am aware it’s an option but I strongly prefer to do updates and restores over USB. I’m not sure what apple expects us to do with the IPSW or how anyone else is using it if it doesn’t even work
I'm pretty sure you need the beta version of iTunes in order to do it.

yes but Whatsapp and all other services already got those. It is very tricky when you are divorced and have multiple family groups. Sending wrong pictures in groups suck :)))

The fact that iPadOS doesn’t have the same lock screen customisation is somewhat backwards.
iPadOS still doesn't have battery health and you worry about this? But more importantly to me, trying to install this beta hard crashed my iPad mini 6, to the point of going into recovery mode.

Yes, that's correct. I can find battery health by other means. Hope that's ok with you?

Still disappointing that the 'remind later' option in Apple Mail (on iOS and Ventura's Mail app) doesn't hide the email until the later date/time chosen. That's sorta the purpose in using a 'remind later' option, having the email pop up again in the inbox at that chosen time. Not sure if this is just an oversight or what...

I got about halfway done responding to a coworkers message before it quit and sent me back to the home screen. I then went to check through a feed and it did the same not even 2-3 minutes later, so I’m assuming it’s not fixed. Although it’s entirely possible that it won’t work properly until MS releases an official update for iOS 16, which may not be until shortly before or upon launch.
I’ve been using Teams since beta one all day, every day (on an iPhone 13 Pro Max). In beta one it crashes constantly. Fixed in beta two, and it has pretty much worked flawlessly since other than an occasional freeze when I sent a chat message—but if I close the app and reopen, the message was always successfully sent. Not sure why others have run into so many problems with it…

So by your logic, they should also allow people to view unsent messages. 🙄

I agree 100%. It defeats the purpose to leave the message in the inbox. The point is to have the message disappear until needed. This iteration of the feature is a complete disappointment.

Just a quick heads-up to those who use Bluetooth devices to connect to your vehicle. In Beta 3, these worked fine, as they did in all previous iOS versions, but in Beta 4, ZERO accessories to connect to Carplay or your vehicle's bluetooth are supported. This means things like Spotify and Pandora no longer work, because iOS 16 Beta 4 sees Carplay as "Unsupported Accessory".

This broke in both iPhone and iPad. Neither of them work now, and downgrading to 15.6 requires a full reset, losing all data, because you can't restore from a 16.x backup copy you may have taken.

Also, because iOS backups aren't real backups, anything you've installed from the App Store and exists in your backups that is no longer in the App Store, you can't reinstall it, so you end up slowly losing apps over time.

You've been cautioned.

I'm sorry you're experiencing issues, but your post is unclear. You say "zero accessories" are supported, but then you don't actually mention any accessories. What are you talking about?

Later, you refer to apps that aren't working for you (sorry to hear that), but then you claim it's because "iOS 16 Beta 4 sees Carplay as 'Unsupported Accessory.'"

I'm running beta 4 with CarPlay with no issues.

So, either you're experiencing an issue that at least some other users aren't experiencing, or you appear to be describing your issue inaccurately.

I'm completely underwhelmed by these changes, I want apple to add functions that I really, really need even if I don't know I need them yet
