Apple released the fourth beta of iOS 18 today, introducing small changes to a number of features throughout the operating system. There are no big additions in this beta, but Apple is continuing to refine existing settings and design choices.

Apple plans to continue updating iOS 18 over the next few months, with the update set to be released this fall. We've rounded up all of the changes that we've found in iOS 18 beta 4 so far.

CarPlay Wallpapers

Apple added new Light Mode and Dark Mode wallpaper options for CarPlay, and the new wallpaper mirrors the wallpapers that have been added on the iPhone.

Settings

Apple has added a new way to access iCloud settings in the Settings app. There's now an iCloud option paired with App Store, Game Center, and Wallet. iCloud settings can still be accessed by tapping on your Apple Account and choosing iCloud from that interface.

Camera Controls

In the Camera section of the Settings app, there is a new "Controls Menu" option under Preserve Settings. The Controls Menu preserves the previously used camera tool when expanding the controls menu rather than showing the full list of camera control options when using the Camera app.

Hidden Folder

Apple has changed the design of the Hidden folder in the App Library. Rather than showing an icon of an eye with a line through it, it is now blanked out app squares, which makes it stand out less.

Dark Mode/Light Mode Icons

The Dark Mode and Light Mode icons are now appropriately synced to the Light and Dark Mode settings on the iPhone when you use the "Automatic" setting under Customize.

With Automatic turned on, the icons now turn dark when Dark Mode is activated and light when Dark Mode is off. This wasn't working in prior betas.

Stocks Icon

Apple tweaked the design of the Stocks app icon. The lines are subtler, and there is no longer a white haze over the bottom part of the icon.

iPhone Mirroring

This is a macOS Sequoia feature more than an iOS 18 feature, but when using iPhone Mirroring with macOS Sequoia beta 4, you can change the size of the iPhone window on your Mac's display.

Control Center

There's a new Control Center toggle for Bluetooth, but it is not yet working. Apple also added a Silent Mode/Mute toggle and an Accessibility Eye Mirroring option.

The Open Music Control Center option has been removed.

These changes are also applicable to the Lock Screen Controls.

AssistiveTouch

There are new Type to Siri and Apple Watch Mirroring options available for AssistiveTouch.

Apple Intelligence

There are additional references to Apple Intelligence features, which suggests Apple is continuing to prepare to implement Apple Intelligence in the beta in the not too distant future.

I don't know why Apple still doesn't let us add our own CarPlay wallpapers or configure what we want to show up in the view that shows multiple things when driving. Like I never need my calendar in there, or my POIs. I mainly just want a large map and large music interface split, and then for my garage door to show up when I'm close to home like it does now.

I have been using the beta the last several weeks and find very few bugs appearing and no apps fail to load yet. Impressed compared to 3-4 years ago where even the release versions were buggy. Nice that they are doing a better job with quality control for iOS

With iPhone Screen Mirroring and Assistive Touch... will we finally get mouse support on iOS like on iPadOS?
Would be a great thing for RDP usage... hooking up an iPhone 15 to a USB-C screen basically turns the iPhone into a thin-client... except for the mouse support.

I think having no icons on a hidden folder stands out more. Just bury that folder in another folder. Also, I think I’ll wait another beta or two before I jump in.

Downloaded the Beta 4 for my iPhone 14 Pro Max and so far the only issues/bugs I've noticed is that when the phone wakes up, the brightness goes all the way down to 0% and also, it sometimes takes a second or two for the screen to turn on upon waking up. All the emojis got reset to their default color as well. 🥴

Finally some new carplay wallpapers! I wish they’d give us the option to use custom ones, that would be cool

I am hoping the battery life is better in this beta. It has not been great on my 15 Pro Max or my Apple Watch Ultra. Also had some issues with location services. Bit a reboot fixed that.

Don’t be inclined to install the ioS18 beta …
Typical Apple bs & lack of care .... there is no way I can downgrade to iOS 17 from iOS 18 public beta (sorry I wanted to take a peek now). iPhone 15 Pro Max [you'd think I'd paid enough to get a little professionalism from Apple].

Mac Sonoma keeps trying to install an update to phone, but fails every time;
Finder cannot reinstall iOS 17 backup & indicating that Find My needs to be disabled on the phone (which it is);
As per the recovery instructions provided here & elsewhere, the Phone refused to do this as well.

I noticed a few things after Beta 3. The first is that the Facebook widget is gone. Probably not an Apple thing, and certainly not important. But, the real issue for me is that while using CarPlay, the Messages app is no longer available. So, I cannot send or receive a text message via CarPlay.

Did you install the developer beta or the public beta. They do recommend not to install on your primary device so it's kinda done at your own risk.

Having problems with a beta? Not a polished & finished OS yet? Who would've thought?

There's no "lack of care" or professionalism? What about when you're warned multiple times to only install on spare/test devices & that it's beta software and you agreed to those warnings before installing?

This is why I think Apple should once again restrict the betas to developers... it's in the hands of too many people
