Not at all. Apple should be proud of the new Weather app.

I will still use CARROT Weather, but for a vast majority of people, Apple's Weather app is the best weather app out there.

I have been a CARROT Weather user for a couple years now. With iOS 15, I'm debating whether I should cancel my sub and just go with the iOS weather app. Although I still appreciate the UI and customization that CARROT provides. Though I thought they are going to lose the Dark Sky API, so I'd take we'd have to choose another weather service to pull data from.

Apple in 2020 acquired popular weather app Dark Sky, and in iOS 15 some of those Dark Sky features have been incorporated into the official app. Apple's Weather app has received a major design overhaul in iOS 15, making it a much better weather resource.

Design Overhaul

The Weather app in iOS 15 has an updated design that makes it easier than ever to see the information that you want to know at a glance. The Weather app adopts the card-style interface that's also been used for the Settings app, separating different information into sections.

There continues to be a main view with the weather conditions on an hourly basis that you can shift through, and a new 10-day forecast view lets you know what weather you can expect in the future. The updated 10-day forecast shows expected conditions and has a bar that makes it easier to see the temperature over time at a glance.

Scrolling down through the Weather app will bring you to new weather modules, where new graphical weather data has been added. There are modules for air quality, temperature, UV index, sunset and sunrise, wind, precipitation, humidity, visibility, and pressure.

For each of these modules, Apple provides graphics, context, and more information than was previously made available. Apple shows the specific direction of the wind, for example, and provides details like when precipitation is next expected, what the UV level will be like throughout the day, temperature adjusted for humidity, dew point, and more.

Weather Maps

Apple in iOS 15 added full-screen weather maps that provide overview data on expected precipitation, air quality, and temperature. You can get to the maps by tapping on the default temperature map and then tapping on the stack to change the view to precipitation or air quality.

There's also an option to access the weather maps from anywhere by tapping on the small folded map icon in the bottom left corner of the app.

The precipitation maps are animated and show the path of incoming storms and the intensity of rain and snow, while the air quality and temperature maps let you see the conditions in your area and the surrounding areas. You can zoom in or out as far as necessary.

Air Quality information is limited to Canada, China mainland, Germany, France, India, Italy, Mexico, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, UK, and the United States.

Next-Hour Precipitation

When it's going to rain, snow, or hail in the next hour, you can sign up for next-hour precipitation notifications to get a heads up.

Next-hour precipitation notifications are available in the United States, the UK, and Ireland.

Animated Backgrounds

To go along with the updated design in the Weather app, Apple offers thousands of new animated backgrounds that provide more information on sun position, rain, clouds, storms, and other weather phenomena. Backgrounds change throughout the day and the night and shift based on weather patterns.

Animated backgrounds are available on all devices with an A12 Bionic chip or later. Earlier iPhones will not have access to the more detailed animations.

loved dark sky!

Macrumors is calling them Precipitation maps, not radar.

quote from the article:

"The precipitation maps are animated and show the path of incoming storms and the intensity of rain and snow, while the air quality and temperature maps let you see the conditions in your area and the surrounding areas. You can zoom in or out as far as necessary."
Yea so it’s not actual live radar like every other weather app on Earth has, it’s a giant dark inaccurate blob that shows estimated rainfall. I don’t know what Apple was thinking with this, it’s not a big deal, but if they can’t get something this simple right, my god.

Crap, this is the first software thing my iPhone X won’t do. I like those animated weather backgrounds. Looks like I’ll miss out on a bunch of new ones. :( Otherwise, my iPhone X still feels fast.
The iPhone X isn’t capable of running a small animated video, the chip it comes with just isn’t powerful enough, that’s why you can’t watch videos on iPhones earlier than the XS.

Still no detailed hourly breakdown. It’s pathetic how sorry apples stock weather app continues to be even after the Dark Sky acquisition. They literally have all the data now. Just integrate it or better yet just make the DS app default.
You would logically expect the stock weather app to be the worst one available.
1) There's no point in releasing a third party version that's worse (even though people do).
2) If you buy a better weather app then Apple gets 30%. More money in the bank.

Well, if weather backgrounds are the biggest new feature (excluding incremental updates to existing features) then I won't be upgrading my X any time soon. (I would like to be able to do proximity detection on AirTags though, but that's not a new feature to this phone.)

Apple bought Dark Sky, arguably the best 3rd party app on the market. They’re integrating it into the stock weather app but doing a very half assed job at it.

Indeed. My own weather app used to use the Dark Sky API until Apple closed it (and I retired from software development).

That sunset tile goes in the wrong direction for people in the southern hemisphere - the sun goes from right to left, not left to right.

It'll be odd every time I look at it!

That is breaking news! 👀
—or is the position of the sun still fixed at the center of the (this) Universe? 😉

What do the bars between the temperatures represent?

Good point. I think that the coloured line is the expected range of temperature for a given day, but that lines for all days are based on the minimum and maximum for selected time period. So the larger grey lines are the range (minimum to maximum) of temperatures expected across the entire 10 days. I am a scientist and honestly I wonder how useful this display is. Why do weather apps and forecasters on TV assume people cannot read simple time series charts??? And the cloud/sunshine/raindrops icons are of absolutely no value whatsoever in a place like where I live (Scotland). Whenever I see them I think 'd'uh, that about covers the possibilities'.

That makes sense. Appreciate the info. Thanks very much.

I wish they'd make a widget like the existing Dark Sky widget for watchOS. I'm mostly using Weather now, but not on my watch because the complication options just aren't quite there.

Perhaps a stock Apple Weather app for iPad will be a crown jewel WWDC announcement for the upcoming iPadOS 16?!!

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
How about an Apple Weather Station TM to go with that weather app?

Especially if the data from all of them were fed into the weather forecasts. Like the AirTag leveraging coverage from all the iPhones out there, the volume they could collect would be huge.

While I really appreciate iOS weather …. I’ve stuck with Carrot weather for now especially because my most used device is my iPad. I really hope Apple keeps Dark Sky around. I love Carrot because of the Apple Watch complications. I can see weather for the week with sunrise/sundown in the middle complication.

The quality of a weather forecast greatly depends on your location. For example on my location (The Netherlands) Dark Sky isn't the most accurate, hence I don't use the standard Apple weather app. On my location WeatherPro and Weather&Radar are accurate.
