This is presumably because Apple is handling the Send Later on their servers, meaning your device doesn't need to be online or even turned on at the time of sending. They can't do that for SMS, because that's tied to your SIM.

Good point, and I guess that makes sense. Personally I think having it at the app level makes more sense in most use cases, but I can see the logic there.

There & Back Again
Two things:

1. Pumped for Send Later
2. I hope they fix how slow it is to just send a pic - it has been slow the last few iOS releases on various devices. Hate it!

All this and still no archiving. Crazy to me.
Agreed.

There's no neat way of exporting messages, or even an easy way of removing various media over a certain age, so you just keep them until your iCloud fills up or you set an expiry.

I don't really know why it bothers me, as I can't remember the last time I scrolled back more than a few days in a messages thread, but I just don't like the idea of having them auto-delete.

I can speak to my scenario. I am in a chat with some older folks for whom whatsapp or telegram are just not an option. Texting is hard enough so they just use the default to keep friends and family in the group up to date with their lives. RCS means no more blurry pictures and better compatibility because sms sending errors are fairly common.

I remember one time I needed this one person to take a picture of their medicine bottle so I could verify they were taking it correctly, it could be dangerous not to! Because of how awful the sms quality was I was struggling with each picture. Apple lost a lot of points with me that day for not supporting RCS sooner so I could just verify someone I cared for was dosing their prescription correctly (elderly and all that).

This is actually one big reason I’ve soured on the company. For all their breathless commercials about saving lives and privacy this was a very important moment where someone’s safety fell counter to their selfish platform ambitions. Apple has to do better but I realized then they are a very petty company at their heart.

The greatest feature is that Android users with green bubble will have the ability to change color of their bubbles into rainbow pride colors :)

Yet no alert separation of likes from new messages.
Exactly! "Like" notifications drive me nuts. Yea, I just had to stop what I was doing to know that someone saw the thread. I don't mind the feature, but I definitely don't need a notification.

Scheduled send is Server-Side. The moment you send a Scheduled Message, it is sent to iMessage servers. Even if you turn off your device, the Scheduled Message will still be delivered because it is handled in iMessage servers. That is not possible with RCS/SMS.
Well, that is just a poor excuse. Apple still feels the need to be divisive.

Apple could easily have made a choice to do client-side scheduling for non-iMessage recipients.

That’s interesting. I can’t imagine a scenario where I would ever schedule a text.
I use it to send birthday messages. I have coffee about 5:30 on weekdays getting ready for work. While I do, I look at my calendar items and schedule birthday messages for later in the day when people might be awake. I pick random minute times so its not exactly on the hour, it feels more untimed I think. Some people dont use focus modes so I keep them in mind when I send.

Do text effects and formatting work if you send to an Android or iOS 17 device?

Well, my IQ is high enough that most of these features are not worth anything. But I'm sure that teenagers and 20 somethings having trouble getting through high school or college will find them quite valuable.
I doubt this appeals to folks outside the loop. Its features for the sake of adding features, not value. As I stated above, if they were really serious about material improvements and safety RCS would have been a thing long ago.

Most years the iMessage updates seem dumb to me and useless. Eg the stickers and Messages “App Store”.

This year they’ve really hit it out of the park. Biggest thing is ability to do tapbacks with emoji like every other major messaging platform. No more cringe “HAHA!” reacts that come off as sarcastic. Genmoji will make this even more fun no. Maybe the boomers here won’t appreciate it ;)
