Thank you for bringing this up in the first comment. It drives me up a wall how everyone seems to have just forgotten about that.
Count me in as one of those who ”forgot”.

Or maybe people just never used it (i.e., swiping left and right between control center screens) because it was just slow and awkward?

If I did use it, I can’t say I miss it.

Surely with the added customization, even you two can get control center pretty much how you like it, even if what you will do to customize is to strip out all the new options introduced in iOS 18

To me, it sounds like a win all around, assuming it is implemented in an intuitive and easy to use way.
To me, it‘s not worth the time and trouble to customize it. And then redoing it all next year when Apple decides to implement it differently in the next iOS version. Been there, done that, got tired of it.

I do feel Apple products have lost their zen-like simplicity. It’s sad, because that‘s what first sold me on Apple back in the iPod days. You could walk into an Apple Store (if you could find one, lol) pick up any product and just use it. No training, learning, tweaking, customizing, etc. It just worked.

That‘s what the home app is for!

I don’t use control center for HomeKit because I detest how iOS (Siri) shuffles buttons around all the time. Completely defeats muscle memory. At least if I open the home app, everything’s right there in fixed positions.
I think there was a bug for some people where the control centre icons got randomly shuffled around, especially after reboots.

Luckily, I've not had that happen (iPhone 11) and I have one CC screen dedicated to Hue/Homekit scenes and lights.

I don't use the Home app as I really don't like the way it shows scenes, and have to scroll to see them all. I find the GUI absolutely awful. Like it was knocked up as a demo by someone who would rather be doing something else and then abandoned.

The "torch" icons are shortcuts to the Philips Hue app as I have an Ikea smart plug that works with Hue but not with Homekit. The power icon is also a shortcut to the Hue app and turns everything off. Luckily, my layout hasn't changed since iOS 18 started, apart from the fact in B3 I was able to shrink some homekit icons down to 1x1 and add some more stuff.

Control Center buttons dont move. You're thinking about App Library.

Are you saying they don't move in iOS 18? Because that absolutely do move in 17.5.1. It's a constantly changing landscape on my control center because siri is trying to be helpful by showing recently used HomeKit lights and devices. I have a lot of HomeKit devices so control center is too random to be useful.

Don't take my word for it. Before posting this response I googled and here's a nice summary (not mine) that came up. They agree Siri's behind the shuffling.

Is that iOS 18?

And I am totally with you on disliking the HomeKit app UI. It stinks, but at least it's consistent.

Yep - iOS 18 as this is the thread for it 😁

You may like iOS 18's CC as you can lay it out how you like, even across multiple pages if you wish. Plus the individual light icons change to show whether the light is on or off. The scene buttons sometimes do that, but often don't.

The new CC lets you fix the positions of home stuff. It's very late but very welcome!

I misunderstood, I thought you were talking about CC itself.

Is there no way to reorganize the control center in landscape orientation? Just pulled won the control center while watching a YouTube video, and it looks a mess… but can’t figure out how to reorder the widget in this orientation…

Even when Apple had a landscape mode on the 6 Plus, they were incredibly inconsistent in whether they supported it with Apple apps and OS features.
