I think once the tile-like devices are launched then you just just add one of those to so many things. Bikes, cars bags etc etc. Will be great though once headphones and watches etc have them built in so yeah there might be a period of having to buy new stuff.
absolutely, but that defeats the purpose of this integration though, doesn't it? and headphones and watches that you mentioned are too small to comfortably add the airtags too, i imagine.

Well, these trackers are basically useless for theft, unless you want to go all vigilante and try to steal your item back by yourself. The police will be happy to tell you that these mean nothing to them, and will provide no help.
All police departments work this way? Or are you making a really broad generalization?

There are a limited number of Find My accessories available at the current time, but Apple expects more manufacturers to add Find My support in the future.
For some reason, it's often the case that Apple makes a sleek standard like this and very few people adopt it, meaning realistically anything that supports it will cost more. Hope it's not the same story this time.

Even AirPlay 2 is often not implemented properly on TVs that "support" it. On my Vizio TV, it works less than half the time. I know it's not some other factor cause my Apple TV works fine with it.

Would love if this could be used to allow me to “find my” kids android phone. Unfortunately I don‘t think this would allow that unless it was within Bluetooth range.
That should be possible. Find My works by having every new-ish, Internet-connected Apple device in the world act as a sentry by scanning for nearby BT devices.
If you lose an item and someone else with an iPhone, iPad, or Mac comes close to it, it can communicate with their device with the approximate location of the item relayed securely and privately back to you.

I'm sure someone will program a Raspberry Pi with Find My and a remote detonate command.

(But yeah seriously, this seems more for finding lost items rather than stolen ones)

In other words, I have to make a proposal for a device without fully implementing the technology, before learning finally how it’s done? So, no-go for the maker community?
As of right now, that’s the case. Hopefully that changes. I’m hoping there will be an open sources work around like there is for HomeKit. My device got rejected, so I don’t even know what info they have available.

"If someone steals an accessory with Find My built in, that person will not be able to link the item to their own ‌Apple ID‌ account."

Wow, that'll teach 'em. All they end up with is a $2000 bike, what an idiot.
To be fair, its an eBike, so the "engine just won't start"

This appears to be a bad software design. I get the Tile-like crowding finding feature. However, said feature appears to alert thieves. I wouldn't want everyone and their mother able to track one of my devices.

Let me quote the article...

"The Find My network that allows lost devices to be found through crowdsourcing is anonymous and encrypted, so while you will get info on where your lost item might be, you won't see who discovered it unless they contact you after you've provided a message and a phone number."

Nobody but the owner can track lost or stolen devices. Everyone else are just anonymous "nodes" of communication in the network.

I am loving this but not loving the need to buy new devices - I have three Chipolo trackers that I use a lot. At the moment I have to use the Chipolo app to find missing items (keys and wallet generally not where I thought I left them) and would have loved to have the existing items integrated (understanding the UWB function wouldnt be an option).

Just about to message a Kickstarter project about including this in some upcoming headphones if possible...

I can't imagine how many notifications you'd get on a train. Or if you're an uber/lyft driver.

Note to self, don't pair your secret tracking device with your iPhone.

"If Apple detects a Find My accessory that is on your person or moving with you, it will send you a safety alert. This is so you can make sure no one has planted a tracking device on you."
The item has to be put in Lost Mode, otherwise it can’t be used to track you and won’t cause safety alerts.

Pied Piper has entered the chat...

I really like what Apple is doing but I really do not appreciate this. I understand where Apple is coming from but I planned on sewing a tag into my backpack and hiding one in my car as a simple but effective way to track it, if it was ever stolen. Now any thief would see they are being tracked.

Also what about on a bus or subway? This feature could quickly have people's phones going haywire with safety warnings.

Very true. I was in London in late 2019 shopping with friends. One of them had her iPhone stolen while we were having dinner and we managed to use Find My to hunt the guy down to some dingy pub and he quickly gave the phone up after we made it ping. I was surprised he left it on. Wouldn't recommend people doing that but we were a couple of 240lb ex marines with CQC training.

I have no faith or trust in the Police, in the UK they are completely and utterly useless and weak and in the US corrupt and unpredictable. Depending on the value and location of the item I'll either lock it so it's useless for the thief and replace it or attempt to get it back. My view is if Apple enables us to just 'brick' stolen devices their attractiveness to thieves gets far far smaller. I've never understood why people steal iPhones anymore, the spare parts aren't worth a great deal and it's a serious hassle to try and get money for the stolen parts.

This sort of thing would be ideal for travel luggage that can just get lost.

Prolly as useless as find my AirPods. If not actively connected to your phone it doesn't work to actually find the item at the location.
