So this is getting odder by the day.

Originally I thought that I had a setting wrong or configuration problem with my Exchange server as none of the devices I have (iPhone 3G only, iPod Touch WIFI only, and the new iPad) were not grabbing emails via Push.

Last night, I took home the iPod Touch and the iPad (the iPhone is not mine to take home) and set them up side by side at the home screen. At home I receive the notification (both the badge and the sound) when new mail was received, on the iPod Touch... nothing. I still had to click on Mail and then to the actual account to get the notification.

I read previously that there was a known issue with DNS settings when moving between the office and home, so I changed the DNS on my WiFi to an external address and at the office it still did not work.

It is very odd how the iPad push works at home (iPod does not) at work neither works.

If all worked at home, I could possibility point to our WiFi router at the office, but what is odd is why ONLY the iPad worked at home and not the iPod. This is just getting strange!

The problem might be that for push to work the device needs a permanent connection to the server. Maybe the ipod touch does not keep the connection open.

yes the ipod touch is wifi only and therefore after a short while of being put in sleep it disconnects in order to save battery (if it didnt you would be flat every 4-5hrs) the iphone doesnt have the problem as it is always connected to data so it can recieve calls and texts

Would make sense, except it is the iPad that is working fine (WiFi Only) and again only works at my house correctly and not in the office.

I thought I read somewhere that the iPad does not shut off the WiFi in sleep mode like the iPhone and iPod Touch. It keeps the connection on. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

That would explain why the iPad is working at your house. The WiFi never shuts off on it.

Hmmm.. That could explain things. Can you provide a source on where you read that?

"Persistent" Wifi is a 4.0 feature so if that's what it is then I'm guessing the iPad is based on some of the 4.0 featureset, which makes sense since the iPad supports backgrounds
