This is a serious thread. I forked out over 3000 GBP on my MBP. What do I tell the Mrs? How do I tell her that I can't feed the family for the next month?

I think we can safely say this thread is tongue in cheek…

However the best way I find is to either just slip it into daily life and hope she doesn’t notice.

Or say it’s a new work laptop

Or take something really nice home for her

Or surprise her to a weekend away

Or get a divorce

That’s the one. Advance until apprehended. If challenged I’ll say it’s the 2019 MacBook Pro (flogged on eBay a few months back) and that I’ve ‘just not used it for a while’ ???

I always say it's far 'easier' to ask for forgiveness than permission.

It's like this one time, at band camp, when I came home with a €300 Bose Soundlink mobile speaker...No, it was not pre-approved.

I told the wife, “Oh there is stock for the new MacBook Pros. I think I’m going to buy one, are you ok with that?”
“Yes.”

Oof. In my world there's a big difference between non-disclosure/surreptitious upgrades and outright fibbing once caught!

As I run a YouTube channel where I sometimes have items sent to me for review, I always use the excuse "its a review unit sent to me for free" ;)

Maybe try and say at least your hobby is (potentially) productive - compared to £000s on bikes / cars / whatever.

Also you could try and say it's just spending some lockdown loot due to the lack of holidays.

You can point out that they are in short supply and you were scared to miss out? That one can be quite compelling and has the benefit of being true if you wanted a BTO this side of Xmas.

Hopefully the smile on your face when you play with your new toy will dissipate any anger?

"My 16" is a leaf blower, so I can't hear the music I'm making. The new 14" looks good."
"OK!"

Does anyone else take 20% off the price when she asks how much something cost?

And still get told off.
VAT is 21% here and I always take that off (as I buy it on my business). Still get eye rolls

My father and I have done this several times with my mother.

My father usually hides the new stuff and gradually brings it out as he removes the old one progressively, until my mother no longer sees it.

In fact, my dad had an Apple Watch S4 Space Grey and bought a silver S6 and my mom didn't notice yet.

With my partner I don't need to hide it, he just bought a Watch S7 because he felt like changing, and I'm waiting for the 27" or 30" iMac M1 Pro to come out and as soon as it comes out I'll most likely buy it.

I told her that I am going to buy new macbook, she does not like it. But she thinks it cost half… ehmm .. if she knew ??
