Have a question - if I have an existing voice-only AT&T contract and I buy an iPhone can I just stick my current SIM inside and get going?

I don't want EDGE - there's no coverage in my area...

Is this possible? Let me know, thanks.

EDIT - I'm aware that I'd still have to activate via iTunes with the current SIM and than cancel the $60 per month contract within three days to prevent fees being charged like Alex King did...

I've read the answer is YES but at the ATT store they told me the answer is NO. But there's really no need to keep the old SIM anyway, since phone numbers arent loaded in the iPhone via SIMs. You'll probably do better just to port the number over.

No. Activation is required for the iPhone to function, including iPod.

edit: The SIM card may work, but you still need to activate and the phone comes with a SIM already installed.

Yeah - I'm aware I'd have to activate but if I took the Alex King approach and cancelled the SIM that came with, would I still get voice support on the other SIM if I put it in?

Nono - I don't want the SIM numbers or anything - I think they'll be good keyboard practice :D I was just trying to figure out if there's any way for me to enjoy a voice-enabled iPhone for two months before I go live in the EU for a while.
