It's funny how Apple used to tout the iPad as a laptop killer. Then they admit defeat by introducting a trackpad to make it more laptop-like.

Of course, everyone here is claiming it's the greatest decision ever. I remember everyone saying a touchpad was not needed; I use my iPad to replace my work laptop, etc.

Well for me, the iPP offers LTE (Macbooks don't) and is an incredible consumption device (Macbooks aren't). I can do almost all "laptop tasks" on the iPP, and I hope Apple keeps narrowing that gap.

Thats great. Don't get me wrong, I like the IPP, I just am not nearly as productive on one. MacBook is also a great consumption device. IMO, you can just do a lot more with a MacBook with fully functional apps. With that said, the IPP goes back to Apple this weekend, the creaking of the device when picking it up also unnerves me.

After using the iPad as a pc replacement for a while. I think there is great progress but for me it couldn’t replace the power of a laptop. Gaming on the iPad is truly a joy, among other things.

These are steps in the right direction, but I’d love to see multitasking further evolved and a few apps start to flesh out the hardware capabilities of the iPad.

With pro apps still in the horizon and Apple tweaking the iOS further to become more of a hybrid tablet laptop...I’d say we are about two years out for a true replacement for professionals (in most instances)
Apps a the key. Mouse support will help make the iPad more Mac like; the apps need to become as full featured as on a Mac.

Office, for example, is more than sufficient for basic work but can’t replace the desktop versions for serious work in most cases.

Of course, that also means more powerful processors. Ultimately the iPad could become the Mac tablet of apps become indistinguishable from the Mac versions.

I like my iPP but it can’t replace my Mac for business use.

We won't know for 100% sure until they're released, but it would make perfect sense.

It's very likely the camera configuration on the new 2020 iPad Pros will be different from the 2018 iPad Pros, which would mean the 2018 Apple Smart Folio keyboards would not be compatible with the 2020 iPad Pros. So how about a 2020 keyboard on a 2018 model? That wouldn't work properly either, because the magnet configuration would be different. Thus the way to bring the trackpad keyboard to the 2018 model would be to create an entirely new keyboard line for the 2018 models, but it's extremely unlike Apple will do that.

IMO the Bridge is a non-starter, because it's a Bluetooth keyboard, and the trackpad is a non-standard implementation. It's basically a hack. If it doesn't use the Smart Connector, I'm not interested. YMMV.
I agree on the Bluetooth pairing being a non-starter as I much prefer to use smart connector, which is why on my 2018 iPad Pro I went with Apple’s Smart Keyboard. However, I still don’t see why Apple couldn’t offer the trackpad Smart Keyboard case for 2018 iPad Pro. These iPads were such a huge leap in hardware from the previous gen that they will likely be relevant for several years, and with people are using these more and more as laptop replacements, I can see apple developing new cases for Gen 3 iPad Pros as well.

Probably won’t, because anyone who wanted a keyboard for those iPads already has one, they were expensive, and most wont buy another.

While what you say makes sense from a practical point of view, that's just not Apple's style. The new keyboard becomes an enticement for people to upgrade.

I can’t see Apple supporting iOS and MacOS the way they are now long term. I believe that iOS and MacOS are eventually going to merge or MacOS is going to go away. An iPad Pro with a Smart Keyboard and trackpad is essentially the rumored ARM MacBook, minus the Mac.
Yeah they’ve actually said they aren’t going to do this. No merging. Just adding capabilities

iOS sucks and the iPad is a terrible computer.

iPad is a tablet. IPadOS is a touch based tablet operating system.

IMHO, There is no better tablet on the market. If I am wrong, please suggest a better one.

Tablets can be used for a wide variety of tasks, including productivity. Some of these tasks are better performed on a tablet, and some are better done on a traditional computer. It really depends on the individual’s workflow. Some folks need to take a powerful MBP with them everywhere. Some folks can use their iPad for mobile needs, and a desktop for heavy lifting back at the Office. And, some people can do just find with iPad only.

i'm not talking about accessibility support. i'm talking about what the article says "using a mouse or a trackpad on iPadOS similar to using a mouse or trackpad on the Mac". no one needs that. current mouse accessibility on the iPad is fine.
Why do you care? Do you use every single feature on an iPad? If not, are those features "stupid"? Your use does not match millions of other people and what they do (or wish they could do with the addition of a mouse) with their iPad.

No one is forcing you to use a mouse/trackpad.

I am sometimes coding via Cloud9 on an iPad on-the-go, and having a more accurate way of clicking around the IDE would be more than welcome.
I still have the original 12.9” iPad Pro and am waiting to switch to this year’s iPad, especially if this is true about iOS14 (in which case I doubt my old iPad would get support for it anyways).

Because windows sucks, and the surface is not a great tablet?
People need to stop with this...
I used Macs since OS 9 and jumped over to Windows 8 with a Surface and it was the best computing device I have ever owned, other than my Surface Book 2 which I currently have. My old 12inch Power Book g4 comes in third. Windows doesn't "suck" anymore and is really reliable actually and can run on some low end systems that a Mac couldn't dream of. I have seen windows 10 run on 2gbs ram and as long as you didn't have a lot of tabs or apps open it ran fine. Imagine MacOS running on 2gbs of ram. Surface is a great LAPTOP in a tablet form factor, which is nothing that Apple has yet. They have a mobile phone running in a tablet form factor. iPad OS that you have today should have been what the second update to the original ipad and its OS when it was first released. It amazes me they are just now adding rudimentary features that everyone else making tablets has had for more than a decade. Heck Windows had it in their XP tablet edition back in the day.

I use MacOS, iPadOS, and windows 10.

Windows sucks.

Surface is a “great laptop in a tablet form factor?” Ok. But, as I said, it’s a terrible tablet.
