The definition of entitlement. No, removing a watch face will not magically grant your outdated processor the ability to do stuff the third-generation can do.

Still love my steel series 0.
No. This is Apple doing what it does best - practicing planned obsolescence of it's products.

Ugh Apple, seriously? I’m an owner of the stainless steel 1st gen Apple Watch and I’m not looking for an upgrade yet since it’s in a pretty good condition. Why should my watch not get the watchOS 4 features if my watch’s hardware is practically identical to Apple Watch Series 1 except for the faster processor. Ridiculous!

I would rather have Apple remove other useless features like ToyStory Watch faces and let me use a feature that I was actually looking forward to.

Like omg, my 1985 bmw won't go as fast as your brand new m550i xDrive. I'd rather have bmw saw off my roof top and attach a rocket the back of my car and let me go as fast as you. It's not fair.

Most likely less capable heart rate sensor is the culprit.
Except by using Cardiogram I can get resting heart rate with no issue. I smell Apple just took the feature to make people upgrade. Also nowhere I can read that Apple changed the actual hrm hardware between S0 and S1...

Under 'Elevated Heart Rate' Notifications' in the Health app on my iPhone, 'Show All Sources' has no data.
I've got the watch Elevated Heart Rate set to 100 BPM, and the only trigger and notifications come from my Heart Watch app. Not sure if there is a glitch..

So the elevated heart rate warning should only go off if 1) your heart rate is *measured* over your threshold value AND 2) you have not been active for 10 minutes.

Can you confirm that this has happened to you? If not, then it makes sense that there’s no data there.

Maybe try sitting still for 10 minutes, then watch a movie that gets your heart rate up to 100. I personally can’t get my heart up that high without exercising, and I think putting the watch on after a workout wouldn’t set off the alarm. Someone on here has to have a high enough resting HR that they can do this, right?

And the hardware limitation is?

Happy to hear the reason . And we can debate that

Let's jump in and defend ....Smh ;)
[doublepost=1506060318][/doublepost]

How does CPU affect HR? Let the iPhone do the number for series one, its connected all the time and u will need legacy data for calculations .

Or do you thin all the data is stored on the AW and it's constantly calculating your HR patterns ?

EXACTLY! The Watch CPU still has to run the HR sensor, collect the data and sent the data to the phone. While that may not seem like much it is a lot more work doing it constantly than just once every 10 mins.

Even in batches that is still MUCH more data that has to be collected, and transferred.

The series 1 is no slouch, let's be honest. It seems to do fine with all the other fitness stuff. I'm not saying not not CPU, though I have doubts

Just to be clear we are talking about the 'Series 0'

I am not saying it is not capable. It is 100% capable of doing this but it would take a much much larger battery hit than the Series 1 onwards.

What I am saying is the dual core processors are able to do much more than a single core processor while using much less battery. So the sustained load through the day of collecting and transferring data is less of a hit to the battery on a dual core than a single core processor.

EDIT: Just to be clearer. What we are talking about is the ability to do more frequent HR measurements which is turn allows for more accurate measurements of other data point such as resting heart rate.

Your wrong. Calculating the resting HR dos not tax the CPU ans more than showing that heart rate over the day graph. The original watches were left out be purpose Not by capability. If health would be a big Point for apple they would not have crippled the S0.

I’m honored to be in conversation with such a high ranking Apple engineer who knows their computing capabilities and business strategy. What else can you tell us?

I’d expect Apple employees to know which you’re goes where...
smh.

What?
The Watch still has to control the HR sensor logic and constantly shuffle HR to the iPhone. Considering the 0 has a single core, once you add all these little things up it could result in too high processor load.

The dual core processor is likely what allows for the sustained work load of HR measurements.

What are you talking about? There are several apps that calculate resting heart rate for the Apple Watch and they work on S0.

I'm surprised to see so many comments before mentioning this. Cardiogram has a constant monitoring feature.

Even if I want to upgrade my watch, I don't have any choice now. There are only 4 aluminium models to buy now in my country.

Just tried out the series 3 models at the local Apple Store, they're really fast.

Guess I’ll be upgrading! I tried drowning the watch in mud at a competition so I got a reason to upgrade. It survived..

Except with Cardiogram you can do exactly that on S0 with no hit on battery life.

PS - I am not affiliated with Cardiogram

Is not about new features but something that I already had it. Heart rate alert, it’s gone. I have atrial fibrillation and that helped me a lot, specially while sleeping, alerting me so I’d quick take my medicine and everything is fine. Found out last night on the worst way possible. Like someone said, I didn’t need Toy Story face and other “features” like that when I had something so important that was taken away from me. I have a stainless steel 42, bought it when was launched but got very sad about this, thinking about Xiomi Amazfit bit or something else but won’t be forced to upgrade to a new Apple Watch just because they want. Ridiculous.

I have an original 42mm SS and unfortunately that feature went a long time ago. You seem to have had it longer than most. My vanish with 4.1.

I actually found it annoying as well.

I managed to buy an Amazfit Bip with allows HR readings every 1 or 10 min (you can choose), shows resting HR, links to healthkit and is updated quite regularly with new features. Battery life is anything from 30-45 days on a single charge (I charged mine twice since Jan). It has GPS and barometer and sleep tracking natively. Super light too. I cannot recommend it high enough to be honest. Less than £47 now.

I wish Apple would add sleep tracking to the Apple Watch. Maybe June we will find out! :) or not! :(

Several sleep programs in App Store. They use analytics on the data from the Apple Watch. I use AutoSleep that works for me. Allows personal tuning of the apps sleep calculations and integrates nicely with Apple Health App. Might give it a try.

I tried all of them and none are as accurate as the Mi-band I had before which was about £6. The Amazfit Bip is even better. The every 1 min heart rate must help.

It will always be like this until Apple incorporate sleep tracking natively.

Just FYI the heart alerts were never available to the Series 0 models except maybe in Betas.

It's another one of those features that was actually there on my watch till 4.1 then it went. Same for HR being recorded during movement, walk, running, etc. Then it just disappeared.

Still don't understand why series 0 can not do resting HR. Nothing more than a calculation but Apple restricted to Series 1 and up. Most likely to encourage an upgrade!
