What we need is a better external monitor support or larger iPads and a magic keyboard or external keyboard and trackpad.
Imagine in the near future where most home TVs can wirelessly mirror iPad contents with cheap wireless (Bluetooth, UWB) keyboard + mouse. All they need is the iPad for light home and school use.

can this be true, or almost true ?

Let us hope so...?!? ;^p

If so, it bodes well for a M1X Mac mini...!

To beat a dead horse, I want a Mac mini with the following specs:

10-core CPU (8P/2E)
64GB RAM
32-core GPU
1TB SSD
10Gb Ethernet
$2999

Should be a beast with the (forthcoming) Metal API-enabled Blender 3.0; I have been trying to get back to 3D on the Mac (had a Power Computing Power Tower Pro 225 with a whopping 64MB of RAM running EIAS back in the day, but then I lost my license dongle whilst moving), and this (again, forthcoming) version of Blender seems just the thing to take full advantage of the horsepower within the ASi SoC...?!?

And if the chart above is true, just think of what that means for the Jade 2C/4C based Mac Pro variants...!

Jade 2C = ~160,000
Jade 4C = ~320,000

Those kind of graphics scores could really push a 3D Renaissance on the mac OS platform...!

do you still think the 64gb of Ram can be a thing?
yes that gpu performance can push hard the 3D Renaissance

can we see Monday a silent upgrade for the M1 with 2 fans in it with M2?
they done it before with the ipad 3 to update the SoC 2 times in the same year

I am hoping Apple will use some variant of DDR5 RAM (LPDDR5X...?), because a SoC that integrates CPU cores & GPU cores with a Unified Memory Architecture (UMA) needs all the bandwidth it can get...?

I would rather see Apple tiering their RAM; entry-level Macs get to choose between 8GB or 16GB, mid-level "prosumer" Macs get to choose between 32GB or 64GB, high-end "Pro" Macs get to choose between 128GB or 256GB...

Wouldn't that be a long shot? The A15 uses LPDDR4. At best, the next M chip, hopefully built on the same TSMC node, would use that.

I don’t think there are any hard constraints here. The phone is perfectly ok with slightly lower bandwidth, so LPDDR4 likely saves them some money. They can choose a different option for the laptop.

The A15 (and previous iPhones/iPads as well) use LPDDR4x at 4266MT/s.
The upcoming "M1x" is going to be manufactured on TSMC 5nm and presumably on the polished version that the A15 uses. After all, they've already made a couple/few tens of millions A15s on it, and if the rumors speak truth, the M1x will have 4 times the performance cores, and up to eight times the GPU "cores". Given that it is destined for laptops Apple has every reason keep power draw down, so no HP version of the process.

The memory subsystem will be critical for real world 3D-graphics at least. The A15 doesn't scale with GPU resources (4 -> 5) even before thermal throttling, which is likely due to bandwidth constraints. How Apple deals with the memory subsystem is of considerable nerdy interest, but will actually matter in practise too.

Exactly. I believe that iPad is great for content consumption, note taking and maybe some creative applications (can’t judge since it’s not my area). But tables are woefully bad at dealing with multiple documents at once which is what a lot of people need.

It’s unfortunate, because I do think it’s related to the platform (being iPhone derived), and in some cases, lack of 3rd party support. But yes, for me it’s turned into a useful productivity companion, but not a Mac/Windows replacement.

If these estimates are correct, then everyone in the Winders World (me included) will have a jaw dropping moment.

M1 destroyed any Intel Integrated Crapware. So again if these are correct estimates then M1 was just a warning shot about graphics and gaming on a Mac. Let’s hope developers jump in.

So let's ramp these up for some hypothetical Jade 2C / 4C SiP (System in Package) numbers...! ;^p

Jade 2C - 20-core CPU (16P/4E) / 128 GB RAM / 64-core GPU - (estimated) 80 Watt / 340 FPS...???

Jade 4C - 40-core CPU (32P/8E) / 256GB RAM / 128-core GPU - (estimated) 160 Watt / 680 FPS...???

Looks like the Mac Pro lineup might be crushing the competition whilst sipping at the mains...! ;^p

I've read through this thread, and the overall sentiment seems that it'll be lucky if the M1X GPU performance will come close to the 5700 XT.

So my question is, realistically, how many years/iterations of the M series chips would we have to wait till we get GPU performance on par with a RTX 3070 and 3080? That would be my sweet spot for the video editing I do.

Hence, I'll decide on selling and upgrading my present M1 16GB after just one year, or wait another year hoping there'll be a further boost in performance this time next year.

The thing is, it all depends in the clock frequency of those chips. If they can scale well within different thermal enclosures, a 32-core Apple GPU could reach even to 15TFLOPS or higher in a desktop form factor.

How does your M1 compare to the 3070 for video editing? The benchmarks I saw using Premiere put them very close.

Unlikely.

This is almost certainly due to chip shortages and issues with supply chain. There have been zero rumors that the M1 products are getting an update at this event. Plus they would never do a silent update announcing M2. We're still in the early days of the transition so Apple is likely going to be very vocal about their new mac chips for a few years. Maybe in 3-4 years when M updates start to become normalized, we may see more updates via press release, but for now, I strongly believe all mac updates are going to happen at events.

maybe they want to be vocal on the upcoming redesign macbook air with M2 in the spring
But, im skeptical also ..i think there are a lot more chances that we get the new mac mini than this imac upgrade

They wouldn’t silently announce M2 though. That’s why I don’t see it happening. The very first product to come with M2 will be announced at an event when they can make a grand M2 reveal.

Im betting the only macs announced on Monday will be macs that come with the M1X chip (whatever it is called). I’m guessing 2X MacBook Pro and 1 Mac mini.

so you are betting your house on mac mini also? Nice, nice, i would love a mac mini

Actually, Mac mini makes perfect sense; M1X MacBook Pro laptops as the focus, but a M1X Mac mini desktop offering as well, for those who don't need the portability of a laptop, yet still want to experience the latest Apple Silicon SoC...!

Then the 27" M1X iMac follows up in the Spring of 2022, leaving WWDC 2022 to preview the Mac Pro lineup, which will ship December 2022...

It seems we are ignoring NPU. NPU is like Nvidia Tensor core. What if Apple add more NPU cores for Mac Pro?

By NPU (Neural Processing Unit...?), I assume you are talking about the Neural Engine cores...?

If the rumors of the Jade 2C & Jade 4C chips are true, then the Mac Pro lineup will have either a (collective) 32-core NPU (Jade 2C) or a (collective) 64-core NPU (Jade 4C)...
