what is the point of live wallpaper? why do you have to touch and hold the screen for it to go active? doesn't really make sense to me.... am I missing something here

Useless as far as I'm concerned... just a gimmick for those who are into such things
I agree with you. It's stupid that we have to hold and touch to see a little animation. I liked the samsung galaxy idea (as you tilt the screen, the "galaxy" moves slightly towards the direction. Again, its a gimmick but a neat one at that and just another way to customize your phone.
It is just a gimmick for the nerds to impress other nerds.
Only if you like Live Photos on by default. Otherwise, gimmick.
It was something they added awhile back because we were complaining they never add enough gimmicks like other OEMs.
If this impresses the nerds, then the nerds would probably be doubly impressed by the live weather on my lockscreen and homescreen, courtesy of the Forecast jailbreak tweak.
I agree that it would be cool if the liquid/clouds/sand in the live wallpapers flowed in the direction you tilted the iPHone. I'm guessing that would take more programming to connect it with the motion sensor/acceleratorometer. Probably use a bit of GPU processing as well.
As it stands now they are pretty to look at even when they aren't moving, but a little busy for my taste. It's a neat trick to press the display and see the wallpaper react, but I haven't played with it like that since the first day or two I had the phone.
Wallpapers with motion are kind of a cool thing on some Android phones -- and when implemented properly don't drain battery. The iPhone version is pretty pointless though and I don't know why Apple even bothered.
Live wallpaper: another Apple brain fart. Apparently the company is full of sheep, people who fail to speak up when some bigwig trots out a new and dumb idea. Other farts: 3D Touch, causing phone to get heavier and fatter and, along with the re-introduction of glass to enable wireless charging, resulting in the 8 Plus being the heaviest phone on the market; loss of headphone jack, an idiot move if there ever was one.
Considering my constant (and irritating) comments about the camera not being flush to the housing…where do you get FATTER?!
I just don't see it. My 6s+ is still thinner than my iPhone 5 and my son's SE.
That's really interesting to hear your negative thoughts about the iPhone in general and iPhone 8. So my question to you is, with all these complaints, then why do you own the iPhone 8 according to your post listed below? Seems like Apple as a Company and the iPhone are not for you if you're this distraught.

For the most part iPhone thicknesses have been slowly increasing since the iP6 (thicknesses don't include the camera bump).

Then the argument that many have proposed to me that the bump is a result of the thinness of the design no longer holds any water.
If the X is thicker than the 5, and the 5 has a flush camera, then the bump on the X, the massive abcess that it is, is something intentional. A design element that Apple has adopted. Apple could make it flush - but they choose not to do so.
Confirmation then of my suspicions that Apple is intentionally keeping the bump because they want to - not because the design forces them to.
Going to have to remember your chart here for the next time someone tries to tell me the bump is there because of the thinness of the design.

It can go flush at the expense of the quality of optics and OIS strength. The bump will always remain, and I'm glad that it does.
Definitely a pointless “feature”. I guess it shows off force touch? It was introduced on the 6s series, so that is the only possible explanation I can come up with. Another possibility was that Apple hoped developers would try to be more creative with force touch too. At the end of the day, I never use them.
Wish they moved all the time. Really cool effects that I'd take the extra battery drain for.

As mentioned in a few other threads, this 6s+ of mine is my last iPhone until the bump goes away.

As to live wallpaper. I already have live weather. Whatever Apple was trying with that I don't get and really don't care about.
