I don't do much travelling so the weight difference between the air and a 13" MBP was not a factor. I wanted a computer that could help put my 7 year old PC desktop to rest and as stated earlier..the air is not a good "primary" computer.

The stunning macbook air seems not satisfy everyone's taste!

So can you guys who have purchased macbook pro explain the reasons why you do not like mba???

Really easy... For $300 less I got a faster processor, a SuperDrive, two USB ports, FW800, Ethernet, an SD Card slot.

I took the savings and bought a FAST 128GB SSD which also lowered the weight of my 13" MBP to 4.2lbs.

The MBA is slick, no doubt, but it's not all that practical for what it costs. If it were $800 then it would be a no brainer 2nd, 3rd, 4th computer.

Let me educate you, then.

You cannot (effectively) run Pro Tools son a Macbook Air. I think that was my point.

I like having a portable computer for Pro Tools. If the Macbook Air had a single 6-pin Firewire port, I might consider it.

Tracking in Pro Tools is not terribly demanding on anything other than drive performance. Location recording is pretty much what I do. I use a Fujitsu T2010 (1.2gHz ULV Intel dual core) Tablet running Vista to track 16-simultaneous sources with a 003 Rack and a Firewire drive on a SIIG Firewire PCMCIA card. Not a single hiccup, and the Fujitsu weighs about 3.5 lbs. and gets a solid 4.5 hours off the battery.

I regularly used my Dell Latitude X1 (2.5 lbs) with my Mbox 2 and a pair of Crown CM700 for stereo recording. The system drive on the Dell is a 1.8" Toshiba 4,800RPM. Not a single hiccup when I used a Firewire drive.

I mix everything on a desktop with a 30" Dell monitor. That is hard to lug to club or a studio space, though.

Nice.

I used my Air for location recording with PT and an Mbox 2. It worked just fine, though it's not a supported setup by Digi. I even got my Dell Mini 9 to run PT8 for recording. It's a pretty slick setup, the Mini 9 just sits on top of the Mbox.

Right, I used the Dell Latitude X1 a couple of times with the Mbox 2 on the system drive. It usually worked, but on occasion it would crap out and overflow the drive buffer. Not a problem for anything non-critical, so I would use it for rehearsals and such.

Good idea with the Dell Mini 9. It's about the same size (but thinner) compared to the Mbox 2, eh?

At least they put Firewire back on the 13" Macbook Pro; the Digi user forums were all going nuts, thinking Apple was phasing out Firewire.

The weight reduction your claiming seems too much. It is not hard to work out so what drive did you have before and what SSD drive do you have now? I would expect it to be no less than 4.4lbs still.

The Air was a test to see if the Unibody design was a viable choice. The computer is actually more durable then it looks. However, the tiny size and the thin design is achieved through a 2mm CPU/GPU heatsink which is practically attached to the inside of the case. It looks like a really refined netbook with a bigger screen size. I do a lot of gaming, and you really need a fast CD drive and a good computer (the Air fails both) so it is only an option for the super-rich, or the businessmen who have brittle bone disease, and therefore cannot carry a full-sized computer. XD

I have MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro. I am neither super rich nor am I a businessman with bone disease. I am just a college student looking to carry the lightest Mac to class.

If I had a powerful desktop, I would have seriously considered the MBA over my MBP.

The major diturant for me are the issues I keep hearing about heat and the general instability of the computer.

Not to mention, they are bound to update the look of the MBA any time soon.

Can You tell me why you need to make repeated threads asking arbitray questions about a computer you most likely do not own? If you're in the market then do a search and see the pros and cons of the MBAir over the MBPs. Or at the vey least consolidate your threads.

Yah no joke. Why do research on your own when you could post like 10 threads asking "should I"-"what if I"-"is this good enough"

Most people will tell you MBA is cheaper in quality. In fact, the new version of MBA is slower than the preceedor.

Mac officially had said, "if you like the thin, slim and light quality, MBA is your choice; but if you are looking for performance, MBP is your choice".

Firewire and RAM here. I occasionally need to do video/audio recording on location. While I could get USB audio gear (at extra cost), Firewire is the thing for video.

I could live without everything else, but not that.

Amorya

I could answer your thread in one simple sentence: the 13" MBP offers more features and better performance at a lower price, but will elaborate a little bit.

Let's examine some of these "extras" that you get for a couple hundred less...

-Glass multi-touch trackpad
-Cooler operation
-Upgradable HDD and RAM
-SD Card Slot
-Glass display
-Firewire
-Ethernet
-Extra USB Port
-Optical Drive
-Better processor and graphics performance

At what cost? A pound or two? It made more sense to go with the 13" MBP.

the air runs hot and is very unreliable, i literally tossed my refurb in the trash and never thought about buying another.

it would restart itself , had tons of issues with heat , battery life sucked.

+1. And heat = noise as the fans kick in.

The new revisions are reputed to be better but I still see comments on the threads that it's not solved for all.

Plus now there seems to some kind of line issue on the screen which seems to be very common and annoying, although I have not personally observed.

its retarded in my opinion. no cd drive? i no its super portable but damn wtf? 1 usb slot also. i mean this is really for people who got money to piss away.
