If you hear about a plane crash, is your first thought "my flight later today might get delayed" or about the people?

Pile-ups are, unfortunately, fairly common. Explosions in hi-tech factories, like plane crashes, are very uncommon.

It's perfectly okay to be concerned with multiple things at once, and be concerned with them in different ways.

If it weren't that way, then we would all have to just completely shut down in order to consider ourselves moral people. Something bad is always happening somewhere, so you should always be concerned with that thing and nothing else.

There's nothing wrong with feeling bad about people dying, while also being frustrated about traffic delays or product manufacturing delays.

If I have a flight later that day, my first thought is, "That could have been me."

And since fatal car crashes are far more common (well over 100 per day in the U.S., and about 5X times that number in China), shouldn't you be even more worried about these events happening to your friends and family, and more concerned about the far larger number who get killed in traffic accidents every day and their families.

Remember that this factory had a lower than average suicide rate compared to the rest of the country, so it might still be a safer place to work on average than most typical factories in that country, even including this explosion.

Isn't iPad made in Shenzhen?

Yes, Foxconn has a lot of factories. Only a few are associated with Apple.

Another great post.

I learned something unfortunate today, apparently many people are mentally not capable of handling more then one feeling / emotion at a time.

What potentially explosive materials could have been in such a factory? Probably something to do with soldering equipment. Last I checked that is generally safe... I wonder if this could have been an attack? I hope everyone is ok...

Feel sorry for the workers, any lead to a cause of the explosion yet?

edit: Just read about the injuries and fatalities, hope no more get added onto the list. No one should have to go through this at their job.

Does anyone know what hospital were the injuries are being transfer to? My mom just called and told me that she received a long-distance call from my aunt saying that she cant reach to my cousin... and he works there too. =|

I've wondered about the ventilation for the outgassing of the various adhesives used in production for a long time. Thoughts to the families of the dead and injured.

Too much pressure on the Chineese factories. Apple needs to get that Foxconn plant in Brazil up by Oct.

I hope it was a tragic accident. Owning 75% of global production can cause sh** to happen in big ways. :apple:

Stop outsourcing apple!

Maybe Apple should stop outsourcing and start manufacturing their products here in the US. It would bring jobs to Americans and for the most part prevent stupid stuff like this, since the US has stricter safety regulations. Combined with this and the tsunami in Japan, Apples production has slowed dramatically. And I would be willing to pay an extra $50 for Apple products knowing that there made in the US.

This is sad news... people dying over electronics... I wonder how the victims' family's feel right now... sad...

Yes because made in the US = safe.

And you can't just make everything in the US. You might be able to assemble it in the US, but some components are made in other countries and such IP belongs to them.

Interestingly, what ever became of the BP executives who sent emails to the companies such as Halliburton regarding less mud for the oil extraction as they "want more now"? Oh yeah, nothing, as BP supplies our government with 60%+ of its needed oil.

As for the topic, we've become a nation of consumers, with horrible education spending and no healthcare as most of our taxes are spent on military budgets, we don't have a country educated and capable enough in competing globally. We will continue to receive goods from large ships from China as they return empty with nothing from the U.S. Sadly, I don't know if this would or wouldn't happen in the U.S., but I can assure you with the ridiculously impossible demand of Apple iDevices incidents such as these are almost unavoidable. This is a sad, sad day. My heart breaks for all those involved, both across the globe and those that have passed in such incidents as the BP oil spill, all in the name of commerce...

Mods, please remove the negative/positive voting on comments. It serves absolutely no purpose but to further inflame others. 3 negatives for someone stating "Prayers go out" to people being killed (PS this isn't about a comment I posted but about many including the image)? C'mon, people...

Voting negatively for a thread on people dying in a factory... pathetic...

Never good to hear news like this! My heart goes out to everyone directly effected by this. Not exactly the best way to kickstart the weekend :(

Actually, the US spends more in education than any other nation as a % of GDP, but don't let facts get in the way.

"While the potential human toll is obviously the primary concern at this time...it is ALSO..."

Learn to read the whole sentence.

That was added AFTER we all started complaining that the first thing that came into Erics head was 'oh no...ipads will be affected!'.

And to those of you voting DOWN peoples simple comments saying 'my heart goes out to the families' - shame on you! Self centered bunch of .....

and another thing. I can bet that if this had happened in a US facility you'd be a lot more sympathetic.

People just died here and all you give a damn about is a stupid iPad. Its a meaningless object. I'm sure others would agree with me when I say I'd rather see iPad production stopped for a month than a bunch of people being killed.

But seriously; take some time to think about the risk people go through just to make your Apple Magic (or any tech) happen. What the industry needs is a Fair Trade standard! :D

True, the same rules should apply for every country. Then it would be about which country makes the best products, not about which country exploits their citizens the most for the cheapest production.

The sad thing is, there is not much we - the people - can do about it, beacuse no matter how much pressure our politicians get, they don't listen to the voters, they listen to the lobbyists.

I hope not too many people were injured, and that they recover well.

Joining everyone before in wishing people working there will all be fine.
That Foxconn company really seems to be complacent when OHSE and corporate responsibility are concerned.

Some of my coworkers spend several months over in china bringing up a manufacturing plant. Safety of the worker and working environments were mere after thoughts.
Its not just foxconn.

The plant in Brazil is more strategic than to help with world wide demand.
Apple wants to tap into the huge population in brazil. The problem is import taxes jack the prices up so only a few can afford them.
Assembly i devices there, now the devices suddenly become more affordable.

LOL @ some of you saying "omg how can you talk about the iPad 2 when there are REAL people who lost there lives!"

Obviously MacRumors heart goes out to the ones who lost their lives, but people also want to know how this will affect other areas of the industry.

Just because you "hope they're ok" doesn't make you a saint.

Ironic though how the building is called the A5 building.

I would too - but remember these are low-quality, absolute crap jobs that no American would want. We're not talking GM union workers pulling $50/hr. Think Mexicans picking oranges, except in this case they're dealing with hazardous chemicals and even worse labor conditions. I'd rather see the US add jobs by rebuilding our infrastructure, investing in renewables, smart energy grids, and a world-class rail and public transport system, as opposed to competing with Chinese and Vietnamese peasants for low-paying jobs.

As for the topic, we've become a nation of consumers, with horrible education spending and no healthcare as most of our taxes are spent on military budgets, we don't have a country educated and capable enough in competing globally. Well, the US has been sliding a lot in terms of investment in education, but our output of R&D, technology transfer, and patents still dwarfs China, which is barely on the map. Basically China isn't innovating or creating anything - they're just completing the most menial, lowest value-added part of the supply chain. China couldn't innovate its way out of a paper bag, and if the flow of foreign capital and technology transfer were to be cut off, its manufacturing sector would be in big trouble.
