All of the outrage because they mentioned the production question at the end of the article is just weird. Anyone who is offended by this story needs to grow up after they climb off their high horse.

EXACTLY! People act like their more righteous or better people because they send "prayers" and their one "thought", like that does anything. So chill out, they asked both questions in the article, about the injured and iPad production. Also, this isn't a major disaster, these types of accidents happen more often than you think.

I'm curious to find out the cause of the explosion, hope not too many more people are seriously injured.

On another note, does anyone else think their fire truck sirens sound like slide whistles?

I wouldn't be one here, either. Obviously, I'm in the minority here at MR, the internet's primary home of US and Europe factory worker wannabees.

I have a friend who is setting up manufacturing in your neck of the woods. I'm all for it though (bringing as much manufacturing back to the US as possible).

Ipad 3 rumor is starting to make more sense now. If you have to rebuild the production line you might as well update the device.

Wow! Talk about a quantum leap in your logic there (and a highly flawed one at that). An explosion in a manufacturing plant equates to an indicator of a new version of a product? Absurd...

I'll definitely say a prayer for all the workers who died or were injured and their family and friends.

Safety standard have to start going before costs. I work in the power industry and safety has always been a huge part of my job. Sure it gets in the way, but if you saw how many marks I have on my hard hat alone, I'd say its worth it. I know this will fall on deaf ears but it disgusts me that big companies still outsource their work to companies who have lack-luster safety records or poor worker morale just to save some money. I hope that whatever the result is from this accident, Foxconn will take the necessary measures to improve worker safety, and just not get by with the bare minimum,

Apple factory or not, I hope everybody there is okay. Obviously if we're looking at fatalities and serious injuries then this was a pretty bad incident.

I just wanted to tip my cap to everyone who showed some human decency in their reaction, of course there are potential financial implications but there's some incredibly cold responses as well.

I'm a huge advocate of not taking things overly seriously (you'll live longer and smile more often), but people just died. Show a little respect for human life and give the sarcasm a rest for a minute.

I wonder how much of this is caused by the insane rush to meet the insane demand for iPads. Sooner or later, safety measures were going to be compromised.

Despite these comments have received negative numbers, they should be stripped of their logo under their name. This may be the downfall of Apple. Shouldnt really joke about that.
Downfall? I hardly think that will result, this isn't even an Apple facility, just a major supplier. Maybe something good* could come of it if there is enough international discussion/uproar. But honestly, this is a small event, per the reports so far. Nothing like the tsunami in Japan.

* safety reform is what I mean....although I have no idea of safety regs in China, they could be better or worse than people in this thread are assuming

When the damned bodies are STILL burning, yes, yes we ARE supposed to ONLY focus on the loss of life and injuries. Jesus Christ.

You have to keep in mind that different groups focus on different things, and we shouldn't only focus on what one group wants or thinks is appropriate.

Level I
The families of the victims are obviously the most concerned with the loss of life and injuries.
The coworkers are concerned for their safety.
Emergency personnel are concerned with stabilizing the incident. They have no time to mourn.

Level II
The insurance company is concerned about finding the cause, to see if they'll have to pay.
Logistics should be concerned with reestablishing production as soon as possible with minimal disruption.
Investors and traders need real time information to make a decision.

Those in level II have different things to focus on that are important to them. That doesn't make them immoral. It doesn't hurt those in Level I that those in Level II aren't focusing on loss of life and injuries. I may sound cold, but the dead will still be dead and the injured will still be injured. My feeling bad about it won't change a thing. I'm just being realistic.

The disruption of production is a valid concern.

Maybe they were using growth chemicals to speed up production
like the Chinese exploding watermelon farmers did. BOOM!!!

I find that curious myself, reports are still coming in though, so maybe that will be explained further... I personally thought some worker purposely planned this. Since the employees were in "transition" from work. Then the report about it possible being another explosion, sounds to random imo. But hey whatever the real story is, it's sad that people have been killed and injured due to this.

It's much more likely to have been an accident involving chemicals used on one of the production lines. That sort of thing doesn't happen very often (because dangerous/volatile chemicals are stored carefully), but it's not exactly unheard of.

Terrible news. Any accident in any industrial setting is never good.

The Foxconn runs what is called a sweatshop.

They push and pressure these poor people and as a result accidents always happen.

I sure hope its an accident and not something someone did intentionally, that would be even worse.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_3_3 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/533.17.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.0.2 Mobile/8J2 Safari/6533.18.5)

Best of luck to the victims and families. A human life is worth way more than any iPad, iPhone etc.

Some people here need to realize that we do NOT know what caused this accident yet. Do not jump to conclusions that this was due to being pressured/overworked/etc or something Apple is doing because of demand by the "greedy" West.

Sheesh...could have been an honest screwup with something totally unrelated to iPad 2 production...we just don't know. If you are going to cancel or "rethink" your Apple purchase over this...bye. Don't need people amongst this community who don't even wait for the details of a situation before making statements or decisions like this.

People love patting themselves on the back for stating the bleeding obvious here.

OBVIOUSLY lives are more important than Apple/tech products, Apple share prices and Apple production. OBVIOUSLY our main concern is with those directly effected by this.

If this were a non-Apple production plant in a muslim country, people in here would be rolling around with laughter.

I do give a toss because I own apple products. I know that in order to support our lifestyles trade-offs have to be made and a lot of people have to resign themselves to a life as assembly line workers. But if these people get killed in the making of stuff I use, non-essential stuff I might add, I might as well start asking myself questions. This is by no means self-righteousness. It's just a matter of not being completely indifferent.

By buying Apple products, you make sure that some people escape total poverty in some backward village in China and instead get a job as assembly line workers, which will pay a lot more than they could ever have made in their village. It's not the best job in the world by far, but a lot better than staying back home in that village.

They push and pressure these poor people and as a result accidents always happen.

In the USA, there is someone who pushes poor people down from ladders. Over 600 deaths at work in 1994 caused by "fall from elevated height". What an awful country. Yes, accidents always happen.

WSJ reports that at least 2 people were killed. What a sad day for the families of those killed and injured, and for all Foxconn employees.

The explosion apparently occurred in the polishing plant, so it is possible that some solvent or other chemical agent could be a causal factor here.

Seriously????

How about "it is obviously unclear at this point HOW MANY PEOPLE MIGHT HAVE BEEN MAIMED OR KILLED and our hearts go out to them and their families"

"While the potential human toll is obviously the primary concern at this time...it is ALSO..."

Learn to read the whole sentence.

So you're saying if it happened at the shoe factory that made your shoes, you'd be equally as upset and posting condolences on shoerumors.com?

Apple, build a new plant in the US! Some southern right to work state! We just moved productions of our sprinkle heads to Alabama from China. We are saving 5 percent because of this!! Quality is better too!!
