Personally, I have used Apple email since the iTools days (2002), and never had any problem. Email always comes through, no disappearing mail, etc.

Yep... another thumbs down on iCloud here ....

As much as I like most of what Apple's doing with their products, I've *always* said their internet-based services were their weak spot. Long before the MobileME thing, I remember having problems with really poor performance just uploading/downloading files to an iDisk. Apple eventually did a band-aid type of "fix" for the issue by locally caching the iDisk contents, so they'd APPEAR to upload immediately, while OS X struggled to get the data uploaded in the background, invisibly to you the user.

We all know how poor the MobileME launch and subsequent service went ... and now iCloud is proving to be only marginally better.

I mean, pretty much ALL of the cloud based services have problems with outages occasionally, (Google just had one that lasted 2 hours or so, a couple days ago -- right when a client of mine was trying to migrate onto Gmail from their old email hosted by GoDaddy!) But even with Apple's new data center, I look at the sheer number of iPhones and other Apple devices out there that are all trying to synchronize with them, and I think that's "too little, too late"! Apple should have had a data center that size before the MobileME days, really -- and now they need much more than that!

I had problems a few weeks back, where mail were disappearing ... I couldn't retrieve my mail, password was rejected and so on.
This contiuened well after apple claimed all was 100% ok.

Luckily I somehow was able to contact apple and get into a next level operator who worked somehow with the cloud servers etc.

They called me back a week later to ask if all was ok.
By then it was allot bett ... But having lost some of my emails and having such long outages and contiuened issues. It really has made question the reliance and subsiquent value I have on such.

And the truth is, I just don't trust it any more.
I still have a .mac account .... So I have used the services for a good amount of time. But when such issues do happen so frequently and to such a degree it has left me looking for a suitable alternative.

And as for push mail ..... Well it's been up and down for more months than I can remember. (both on wifi and 3G)

Really wish apple outsourced its cloud to someone with a better track record.

I'm laughing at this thread. What, there is some 100% uptime e-mail system out there?

I don't use Apple for e-mail. But I've never used an e-mail system that didn't have occassional downtime.

That includes the system at my current employer, a Fortune 100 company that is a IT industry leader, known for making ultra-reliable technology, and which has a world-class, showcase IT department.

Louis CK is right.

Laugh all you want, but we're not just complaining about downtime, but sporadically disappearing emails as well. I have had at least 3 business emails just completely disappear forever. I have had the same thing happen to folks I have sent emails to. This problem has been occurring for several years and Apple has not fixed it. Of course 100% uptime is not expected, but even in that regard, Apple mail goes offline quite a lot more than any of the other email accounts that I use. It's almost expected at this point.

this is so not good for apple.

I stopped using icloud email after trying to log in at several different PC.

it said browser not supported..

Having problems with mail today. Anyone else?

I just sent myself a test message, to my .mac address, from my corporate email account. The message was available less than a minute later when I clicked the swirly arrow in the iOs app t connect/update.

Funny that they are shutting my MobileMe service down which is functioning perfectly and doesn't force me to upgrade my OS/hardware only to make me use a faulty iCloud. I'm very hesitant about switching over to iCloud.

You're implying that MobileMe and iCloud email servers are different?

I am implying nothing. I have no idea if they are or if they are not.

Well you said that the MobileMe service is running fine and you are hesitant about switching over to iCloud.

This whole topic is about email, so you were kind of implying that MobileMe email and iCloud email are on different servers. I was just curious if this was true or not (the upgrade from MobileMe to iCloud involves moving your account to the iCloud server or just giving it all a facelift?).

Yes, this is more the problem... Apple's whole attitude and approach to this aspect of their business (especially in contrast to other aspects of their business, which are the best anywhere). Apple has had not only downtime (for which they don't communicate well during, nor seem to see it as mission critical to fix in a timely manner), but also issues with things disappearing or not synching properly (and not just mail, but calendar, contacts, etc.)

For example, just today I was at an appointment and pulled up calendar on my iPad to schedule another appointment. Around a dozen items that I remembered scheduling (a couple days ago) where not there. I knew roughly where they were, so I knew they should be there. I had to make the appointment blindly and fortunately I didn't overlap or I'd have to be rescheduling. When I got back home, and launched calendar again, they showed up. Now, my desktop (OSX) and my iPad have been on the network nearly 24/7 over those couple of days. Why didn't these things sync over that time? If I can't trust things to sync, what good is syncing? And, if Apple can't make syncing in the background happen reliably... give me a friggin' sync button so I can make it happen and check the results right away. For others, I've heard of things like this just disappearing... so they would have missed the appointment.

This is CORE functionality stuff folks, not some game not working properly! Apple needs to get a bit more serious about this. If iCloud had only been out a couple months, as bad as it would be, I could understand. But, this has been the situation, as mentioned above, for YEARS now. All I can conclude is that Apple just has bigger fish to fry (like developing the next iPhone to sell, and selling music and movies) to really worry all that much about mundane things like calendar, contacts and email. Sheesh!

Im laughing at your post. Youre right all email isnt 100% robust but my mail client with Apple sucks. Simple. I seem to be more affected then others but its so spotty I dont use it for any verification, or even notification. My email was down with three weeks and more on and off. All I got was from Apple Care was its says its online, and simliar comment from a douchey genius at my local store. By the way nothing is free. iClous is a free service only usable by a bought OS or machine...

Login failures multiple times most everyday

iCloud is really unreliable. I get can not connect multiple time daily.
I did not have that with .mac or mobileme. I have another mac that can access iCloud on like but rejects authorization from the email client on the make mac.

If it was not such a problem changing email addresses, I would have switch to another service by now.
