I know the SSD is in good shape, because I sent it away to a data recover company and they wanted $900 to recover the data...

I've since discovered I can by a cheap usb to sata cable to recover the data myself however myself I'm not sure what sata my drive takes.

Target disk mode won't work as the mac won't power on....

Picture of the drive above, any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Its <NOT> any form of SATA, its PCIe - a completely different interface.

TBH your best hope is to buy another one new, swap the SSD, recover your data, return the MBP within the refund period.

Sorry but if Apple use such an interface there currently aren't many other options...

That explains it.

Nope, see above - it isn't a SATA SSD.

No, understand that now, see my suggestion above...

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

And theres no USB to PCIe cables on the market or caddies anywhere that I could use?

Hmmm.. THAT is the point.. Different nomenclature..

What Sata is this SSD drive? Image attached

They are exactly that.. the 'old style' had SATA ratings which increased over time with Speed and Data throughput, up to the point where a PCIe has taken over to The Next Step.. There is no 'SATA' description or connect-ability accordingly.. ** Think of asking what sort of Pistons you would put in an TESLA car' >> they simply don't exist in The Quest.. Sorry to say :apple:

The only way I had thought of this for another person's quest once was to have another rMBP 'from an understanding friend' and SWAP the Drives, and then connect an EXT Drive via USB to 'clone it via CCC' or other as you wish to.. I suspect one day I will do that if needed, unless an EXT Caddy/Enclosure becomes a reality.. Again, Good Luck there!!

Looking at the image of the pinouts in the above ebay sale page, and comparing it against the pinouts in the image you posted in post #25 above -- the pinouts don't seem to be anywhere close to matching.

My guess is that it won't work.
I could be wrong.

No.. not really.. I agree as Fishrrman..

No.. not really.. I agree as Fishrrman says above, the 'pin structure' seems discombobulated to me.. and WHO knows if What You See is What You Get even.. Putting improper Voltage via 'mixed up pins' would most surely WIPE the drive in a hurry.. ZAP!!

** if an Authorized Apple Repair Depot cannot point you at an easier solution, I think SSD SWAP would be the only solution I would attempt.. maybe you could Rent a computer if needed even, if the DATA is worth 'the cost' then just do it.. Safely.. :apple:
