I tried embedding a GIF hosted on Imgur, and it just shows this icon:

Unknown.png

This is the GIF, and attempting to embed other GIFs works fine. Is there a limit to the size of a file embedded from a different site?

I think your issue is Imgur converts all GIF files to MP4 format and this forum does not appear to allow one to attach an MP4.

When I save the file, it saves as an MP4, then I get this error message when I try to attach it to my post.

There is a limit of about 5mb. We can increase it if necessary. How big is reasonable?

The reason we proxy images is its the only good way to do it when we transition to https.

Ah, the mp4 thing will also do it.

Yeah... it is a 1.9MB MP4, so I think it is the file type restriction and not a size issue.

I don't think that's it. As I said in the OP, other GIFs work fine. Here's the same GIF but slightly smaller:

N4NkyN2.gif

I use the original non-MP4 link in both cases, but only the smaller GIF loads correctly.

Oh, that makes sense! The image above is 4.7mb, and the erroneously loading GIF is a little over 8mb. 8mb would seem like a reasonable limit to me, but at least the 5mb limit is (I think) over twice as large as the upload limit.

Ah I see... that link in the GIF format is 7.9MB, so the size it likely the issue there.

Yeah, Imgur must've compressed it even further than Photoshop could manage. Sorry, I wouldn't normally make an entire thread about it, but there's just something fundamentally wrong with not being able to properly display cats on the internet! Anyway, thanks for the responses guys.
