i was planning on buying a powersupport film.... but due to the wider black areas on either side of the screen, does this mean that screen protectors for the 3g are slightly wider also? currently, there is only one version of the power support films. i wonder if they will make a slightly wider version if the whole area of the front face is wider.

I emailed them about this and they said.

PowerSupport said:
Unfortunately our current film for the iPhone will not fit the 3G. We are working on getting the new films to the apple stores hopefully by next week.

Thank you,

Received that on 30th June.

I don't understand why you guys think the iPhone 3G back will be so fragile. Have you ever owned another phone besides the iPhone? Almost every other phone out there is made of plastic and when they do drop, they don't SHATTER or crack! You guys think Apple is really that cheap?

And macduke, don't worry about xploit. He is a known troll just let him do his thing but don't give him any attention. We have tried to explain to him numerous times of why the 3G is not 'budget' but he is as stubborn as a mule. Just don't feed the troll :)

I call the 3G budget because it has been made with less expensive parts. Even though the iPhone is costing Apple approx $100 per handset (down from $200 on the original) they have in fact raised the costs to consumers. So for more money you are getting less than what you got on the original. YES you get 3G speed and yes you get GPS but these are expected specs. I am not a troll. This is a forum and it is my opinion that this new iPhone is sub par. Sorry. Since you have no problems calling me a troll I will say that you are BUDGET! If Porsche made a $20,000.00 car you would probably be the first to buy one.

you got some bad info. the 8gb 3g costs over $170 to make and they are charging $199 for it. it is subsidized of course, but to the honest user that is not going to unlock this is a great deal that wasnt available on the first iphone. i understand the monthly rates have gone up, but its still a wash and most consumers would rather buy now and pay later. its a better phone without question and its cheaper to buy. who could complain about that? oh yea.......

If Porsche made a $20,000 car that was twice as fast as their GT1 I would buy it! I don't think I would care if the body panels were made of plastic, I just wouldn't crash it. ;)

i don't think we'll really notice that the screen has a thicker surround; it just seems noticeable in the apple renders but looks better in a still from the ad. not too sure about the plastic back though or these exposed screws i'm hearing about now.

Everyone who thinks this is a budget phone is dead wrong. Its $300 SUBSIDIZED! They are still making a hefty profit, especially after a year of technological advancements and lower costs on flash memory and the touch screen.

like the people who buy Porsche Boxters?

If you read the article just linked you would find it's cheaper because of

So much for your theory of cheap materials and connectors.

THEORY? Aluminum costs more than plastic and thats to say nothing of the adaptor and lack of dock. Let's see how the screen holds up at launch.

Not Apple. AT&T is the one from whom it costs more. Apple is no longer getting a cut of the monthly rates. It's not Apple's fault.

And I expect GPS to be in the next toaster I buy. Because you say that having it is expected. Which it isn't. Thus the joke.

Sometimes my wife gets upset about something and gets into ranting mode where she complains about everything except what she really is upset about, but if I wait long enough the real problem eventually slips out. I think that is what happened here with xploit today in the quote above. He doesn't really care about the utility or aesthetics of the new phone, he cares that now more people will have them because the initial cost is lower. Any rational person would buy the $20,000 dollar Porsche if it was pretty much the same as the full priced one. Especially if it just didn't come with the premium radio package and was a different color than the really expensive one, two things that are easy to change. Our friend xploit is actually concerned that he will no longer have the coolest most expensive gadget around so he has taken the stance of the elitist and mocks the new technology because it costs less. I think we should all be a little more sensitive to his feelings, after all he did just lose all of his clout.

(Sorry for feeding the troll ;))

Er, right. So what you're telling me is that some bunch of guys have worked out a production cost for a product they've never seen, based on the prices for components they don't even know are in there. Forgive me if I take that one with a pinch of salt, esp. as the later reports linked above give higher estimates. Still, keep on ranting and spamming the forums and if we're lucky you'll get a permanent ban this time.

Why does everyone keep feeding the troll? It's obvious xploit has buyers remorse and an inferiority complex. Let him enjoy his last gen iPhone, convinced that its partially metal back makes it superior to new and improved versions.

I remember when the 3rd gen iPod came out, there were a lot of 'xploit's in the mac forums as well saying physical buttons were better than touch, now look at how everyone loves touch. Eventually he will concede defeat and buy a new iPhone. Leave him be.

Its my first post on this forum so dont yell at me.... yet.

I was watching the local news (tmj4) last night here in milwaukee and they were interviewing the different artists at summerfest. They had Colbie Calliet or however u spell it on the news and she was talking about how she became a big name over the past year. Towards the end of the interview she takes out her iphone and shows the reporter pictures of her dogs. Low and behold it's the iPhone 3G. I laughed when I saw it because she got one before Jack Bauer. lol. Here's the link if anyone wants to check it out, http://www.todaystmj4.com/news/local/22847329.html and click on the video link below her picture, and its about 3/4 of the way through the video.

1. Tapered edge
2. Black border

And back to the original question, the border doesnt bother me all that much, i just hope the screen isnt plagued with negative black thats my only concern.

Edit: I believe u guys are right, i never really handled the ipod touch. I thought for sure it was the phone because in the video when she moved it the top right corner shined in the camera light, it looked glossy. sorry to jump to conclusions.

I think the wider black border looks good--more like a frame and better proportioned.

That actually looks like the iPod touch to me.

Edit: Yeah I watched the video and there is no chrome bezel. definitely the touch

I'm pretty sure that looks like an iPod touch, not an iPhone 3G.
