Yes, while occasionally some people have confused that small stripe as a Proximity Sensor, it is actually a recorder that pipes everything you say and do, along with your location (being detected and uploaded to Apple constantly) back to Steve Jobs who personally tracks each and every iPhone user on the planet. I've spent some time reaserching this and here is what I have found:

a. It is the proximity sensor (this one is highly unlikely, but I thought I would throw on here anyways).

b. It is a quarter slot

c. It's the unicorns butthole (seems like a good place for it)
