I've had Apple Watches since the beginning and while I swim and hike, I don't do either at any "extreme" level. But the Apple Watch is a pretty fragile piece of technology due to a glass surface that has no protection at all from impact. My second Apple Watch's glass completely cracked simply because it fell out of my locker room locker onto a tiled floor. While my Apple Watch 4 avoided damage, my AW 6 has some pretty deep scratches on its surface - and I have no clue how they got there. I - or it - never fell and I didn't participate in any high-contact activities at all.

While scratches are alright with me, I wish Apple would find a better material for its watch glass. At one point, early on, Apple was going house sapphire glass, but the company it contracted with couldn't produce the material in large enough quantities (and, to my investment dismay, subsequently went bankrupt). I understand that a 'lip' isn't desirable on a touch-sensitive watch, but surely Apple could find a better substitute for Gorilla glass - I'd pay extra for something like sapphire. The frame of the watch almost never got scratched for me.
All Apple Watches except for the Sports models have been made with a Sapphire display since the beginning.

Wait - didn't Gurman say this about the s7 ahead of its launch? Regardless, I am all for this!

While I know the glass on the higher-end models are more scratch-resistant, all of the aluminum watches I have owned (s0, s5 & s7) had face scratches on them within the first two months of owning - and I am really careful with my tech (no case on my iPhones, computes, etc.). It's kind of wild, as the scratches are always random things that never struck me as overly aggressive (once, my dog pawed at my arm) where as super aggressive collisions (Watch face crushing into a marble counter corner) yielded nothing. 🤷🏻‍♂️ Anyway...

To date, what Watch offers, affords and how I use it, [for me] has yet to justify me moving to a higher tier than their A-lu-min-ee-um offerings. With a heaping pile of unknowns aside, a more rugged Watch could finally get me to move up from their Al offerings - especially if truly more durable. We'll see. Would like to see this rumor finally see the light of day. Feels like the platform is [over]due a more significant hardware update than the [albeit, nice] iterations we've seen to date.

Bring it.

They’ve sucked at naming things for a couple years now. Great products but cringeworthy naming. “Pro Max”. Honestly the word Max just sounds like 1990s marketing jargon. I shutter to think what this watch will be called.

All I want is a better (i.e. more reliable and easier) way of doing lap splits when trying to use this for sports like running when your fingers are all sweaty, or it's raining, etc.

I want the larger display but not the sports one, can’t the normal stainless steel one have the bigger screen

I recently (in the last two months) switched from Apple Watch to Garmin. I’ve had every iteration of the Apple Watch over the years so it was a significant change for me, but I was limited in my ability to get the analytics and battery life I needed as I transitioned from casual runner to full blown triathlon training. I’m guessing the “Extreme” moniker for this rumored product is swimming in hyperbole, but I definitely see an opportunity for Apple to be a more significant player for to those who are casual or serious about fitness and/or other activities requiring a bit more flexibility from their wearables.

Not sure why they have to keep making it bigger, it's going to take up half of a forearm here soon. I am all for a sport version, will be interesting to see what they price it.
because the large one now looks pathetic on anyone over 6'2"

I could maybe see this boosting sales of AW where some might want a 'rugged' version to beat up, and a more polished version to wear dressed up.
I think they could definitely boost sales by creating a round version for that crowd.

If this turns out to be successful, that will be all the proof needed that Jono missed the mark with his pursuit of the luxury market.

personally, I'm ready to trade up to a model with 25% less battery life and is 25% slimmer. Tired of these chonky boi's
Many luxury watches are larger than AW, and my disappointment with a "larger" AW is the modest size increase that is rumored. When cycling at my limit, often with sweat in my eyes and on my sunglasses, it can be difficult to read the puny AW display safely. I would appreciate an AW large enough to read easily — and one that doesn't look sadly small compared to my Omega.

More shatter resistant?

Read: softer with more scratches 🙄

Why not just make a plastic screen at this point? I hear plastic is “shatter resistant”.

My S6 can't last through a surf session longer than 2 hours. An extreme version with longer battery life and higher water resistance would be nice. Might be able to replace my dive watch.
