Oh yes I do want a more rugged Apple Watch. Current Watch is fine for safe, controlled outdoor workouts. But one minor crash to the pavement and you can feel just how fragile the Watch really is.

I legit don't even need a new Apple Watch but I am so sick of these protective casings that I absolutely will be upgrading to this if it actually does come out.
People who put cases on their watch make me think of the plastic coverings on my grandma’s sofas.

I’ve used an Apple Watch every day for the past 7 years without any particular care, going on runs, swims in the ocean (before it was officially declared waterproof — it was even in Series 0), weightlifting, mountain biking and shooting rowdy events in crowded music festivals and none of my Watches ever got a scratch or a broken screen.

Live a little. Stop bubble wrapping your things.

P.S. I don’t even use a case on my iPhone. Apple Care is my case. Used it once, ever.

I think this has been a rumor going on 3 years. I have an AW6, and I think it’s interesting but for that money you’re close to Garmin Fenix Solar territory, and I’d def go that route before handing over $700+ for a AW. Basically endless battery life on the Solar if you’re actually outside and doing long days/weeks.

When running anything longer than a few hours or climbing outside of an overpriced, plastic-hold gym is considered an "extreme sport", ugh.

Type 2 Diabeetuhs has entered the chat...

The rumor doesn't make very much sense to me. If you're working out, like running, you want something lighter on your wrist, not bigger and heavier. That's why the Nike+ version is aluminum. You also don't have as much time to look down at it to see more things on the screen.

I think Apple has mastered the idea of selling just as much (if not more) an "aspirational" product (their "Pro" branding is a great example: while their ultra high end stuff is actually used by Pros, the iPhone "Pro" has nothing to do with "Professional", it is just "more").

Same here, you need not be Honnold, O'Neil, whomever to qualify for an Apple Watch (because that market is counted in single or double digits), but you have to "fashion yourself" one (and that's a powerful marketing thing: hook into people's aspirations and ego, not their reality and their wallets open!).

Considered through this lens, the product makes perfect sense, and it will mint money, engagement, and entry into the Apple ecosystem for times when people currently take off their Apple Watch and put on their Garmin Fenix, their Coros Vertix, etc, so Apple now has data, use, engagement, etc not just into new users but into their existing sold-in base at times the AW is not on their wrist.

Not saying it is "good", "right", "bad", or "wrong", it's just what a very successful for-profit company does: sell stuff that makes them money and progresses their hold on their market, and that involves some level of disassociated-from-reality marketing/branding, and understanding that human behavior is largely irrational.

Do you want a lighter watch while running? Yeah. But by that rationale Casio would not have sold millions of units of the G-Shock before the GPS/smart watch era, but they did.

You said you’re sick of the protective cases, but you will upgrade to this if they actually come out? You do realize thats all this new “rugged watch” is, right? A slightly larger regular Apple Watch in one of the cases you just said you‘re sick of?

FYI - There are many different flavors of “rugged” watch cases out here for existing Apple watches already out there that make them look just like the published picture of this “new” watch… truth is, there seemingly is nothing new here… at best its just a marketing gimmick… but to me, its more of the same thats starting to creep out of Apple - over priced hype to lure in those who blindly pay Apple for their logo on anything they put it on, regardless of its comparable value with like kind products…

I get your point, but there is a small difference between having the cheap cases vs apple making their screen more durable. That difference is simply the fact that the case has to go on the watch. Several issues result from this (at least from the cases I have tried). One being when you sweat too much the sweat gets in between the case and the watch and the touch screen on the watch doesn't work unless I take the case off and dry everything off. During a really good work out, I'm doing this A LOT. The other issue is over time the cases start to break and aren't as responsive in terms of when I'm trying to use the touch screen.

Regarding the marketing gimmick, I will obviously need to see exactly what the new type of watch actually is, but if it allows me to get rid of these cases I put on my watch, to me, it is worth spending the money.

I appreciate the input, but my first apple watch during weight lifting got a massive scratch across the entire screen. It was useable, but so annoying that the OCD got to me and I had to replace.

There is a fine line between live a little and my OCD with all my things that I manage on a daily basis. Not adequately protecting my apple watch face is one of those lessons learned the hard way.

Had to google around to even remember which series I have. Apparently S5. No reason to upgrade until they actually come up with a model that has a decent battery. The current one isn't that. I'd have to lug around the proprietary charger cable everywhere with me to be able to charge it twice a day so it wouldn't run out of juice, and I can't be arsed to do that. Plus my car doesn't even have those old USB-A ports so I'd also need an adapter. Yay.

I've no need for a larger watch nor do I need it to be any more "extreme" than it is, but a larger battery is a must. Give me actual >24h battery regardless of the time of year or other circumstances and we can start talking about separating me from my money. And if they don't come up with one of those before my current one dies completely, I'll rather live without one. Currently it's not worth the price.

I’m not sold yet. My S1, S2 and now S4 have all been stainless steel. Not even a scratch after almost 2 years each.
I tried the titanium for a week but returned due to it scratching like crazy without even having knocked it once on anything.
Stainless has been basically indestructible for having clipped nearly every man made material from brick to metal and no issues. More than enough for me so far. And honestly if it’s already 1.9’ and proposed is less than 2’, hardly a game changer at least from the size front.
I’ve said it before, Apple needs a round face!! Stop recycling everything and bring so damn safe it at least offer an option. There’s a lot of people who appreciated the iPhone mini despite it not being a best seller.

nailed it. Love my Garmin stuff but also eagerly awaiting the day Apple catches up.

count me as one.

Something that could help justify a ~$1,000 "extreme sports" version of an AW would be to incorporable PLB functionality.

Right now it seems the only watch product that does it is the Breitling Emergency, but I have no doubt Apple could bring the cost down.

When did running become an extreme sport?
Extreme Sports as quoted many times in the article and other articles, conjures up images of Mountain Bikers at Rampage, Motorcross Riders in the desert, Rally Drivers, Rock Climbers, Murderball players etc.
