I dont understand complaints about text sharpness cause text on the xr is much sharper than text on any normal printed book

Super small font and less sharp than the 8 Plus.

Which is why I use display zoom on my XR and stayed annoyed at Safari for not having a font increase option. I agree--the standard font size of the XR is too small for me. The display zoom is more like what I would expect standard display to be.

having just moved back over to iOS, apple really confuse me on font size and legibility given that they also pride themselves on accessibility. The font in safari is tiny and so many third party apps do not include dynamic font so have tiny thin font too which I struggle to read. What's strange is that on android the same apps scaled the font size but they don't on iOS which is a shame. the built in Zoom feature of iOS does help the shortcomings but it is no substitute to being able to set a larger font in the first place

can you not just increase the text size in under 'display & brightness'?

Edit - Just checked. no you can't :(

Well I finally gave up yesterday and returned the XR and went back to my 8+. Just like others have posted above, I tried everything and it's just not worth having a phone that hurts to look at, no matter how much I love it. The phone is awesome but I can use the 8+ all day with no issues.

The last four days I would use the XR one day and the 8+ the next. At the end of the XR day my eyes were tired and hurt behind both eyes and on top of the eyeballs inside the socket. After the 8+ day my eyes felt rested and great!!

It's just not worth it as frustrating as it is. Now I'm wondering if my iPhone days are over. Very sad about that!!
Very interesting. Did you try taping off FaceID?

But it is good to know, you are not alone. This is the exact same thing that happens to me on the XR, have no idea what causes it. It seems to be much more mild lately, but I am also not using my phone near as much as my iPad 2018 either.

I have also turned True Tone OFF and lowered the white balance, so that may be helping as well. Who the heck knows at this point. Not enough of us having the issue for any one to do any real studies.

So what? Even if it’s not as sharp as 8+ it’s still sharp and much sharper than any normal printed book. Also, if you cant read small text on the XR you must have problems with your eyes. I wear thick glasses and i can still read everything here on my xr:

On your XR with standard display? Those are some prescription lenses! I can't read the smallest text with my new lenses with my XR set on zoom display.

Without zoom and i wear glasses for myopia and astigmatism. For the smallest font i need to put my phone 10-15 cm from my nose; at that range i see better without glasses, normally

Yes, for the last 5 days I had FaceID off and played with all other settings. Nothing seemed to help. Did the same with True Tone and always had those two settings on Awareness and can't remember the name of the other one but it was off too. Very disappointing and now I'm wondering if I'll be able to use an iPhone after this 8+ finally bites the dust. At this point, it doesn't look good!!!

I don't think it has to do with the resolution (For me, at least), I've tested this by watching videos and looking at pictures for 10-15 mins, I still get the same eye strain regardless of whether or not there's text on the screen.

I really don't want to return this thing without figuring out why this is happening, it really doesn't make any sense.

So you had FaceID off, but did you try covering the Flood Illuminator physically? Heard from others here that it still flashes, even with FaceID turned off.

I'm really just throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks. I haven't yet covered the notch physically.

My myopia is pretty severe. I can read the smallest text in your attachment, just barely, without my glass but am hopeless with my glasses.

I just don't understand why such a helpful feature as dynamic text is not available with iOS Safari.

Am in exactly same position. I had severe headaches with iPhone X , could not figure out why for a long time. Wasted money on eye tests and paracetamols. In the end I sold it on eBay for a 45 percent loss and bought XR thinking lcd will cure. But still the same , headaches are back in evening again.

Looks like my only option is 8 plus. ‍♂️‍♂️‍♂️

Exactly, but this makes text slightly less sharp.

So?
I didn't say I couldn't read it, eyes are fine.
I said it's less sharp than on the 8 Plus, which is a fact.
The font is just annoyingly small. There's a reason they print newspapers and books in a certain font. If they wanted they could make those smaller as well.

Not sure what causes headaches.
With the X and XS Max I thought it was OLED.

After the first few days with the XR had major headache again on Sunday. Things got better after a week, but you only get 14 days to return so that's why I went back to the 8 Plus.
Just easier on the eyes and sharper, plus I like the hue of the 8 Plus better.

Maybe Faceid has something to do with it. My dad got the new iPad, so will give that a try tomorrow, see if it annoys me.

Please let us know if the iPad affects you, would be very, very interested. Thanks!

have you tried display zoom?

Think I found something helpful for those of us affected:
Try turning off display zoom and see if that helps. It may seem counterintuitive since it makes content smaller, but I've had minimal eye strain once I turned zoom off. I don't know if it's placebo or what, but it's very noticeably better.

No I didn’t tape. I saw some had tried that but I just don’t want it if I have to use tape on it.

Maybe the screen is just too tall? Try covering one forth of the screen and you’ll see how much softer is to your eyes.
...or try browsing in landscape mode

I thought it was pwm that was causing me problems with my X after I went to it from an 8 Plus. It it was the text size. Making the screen brighter helped but moving to the XS Max resolved all of my issues.

Old age and worsening eyesight was the true issue. Time to get a new prescription.
