Yup, tiny crappy text I can't see. No thank you. Plus, not even retina is scaled to 1080p you still only get 1280x800 or a bit more. I get that it's retina but it is nicely scaled. I just see PCs selling you this gimmick while leaving you with 72DPI on a tiny screen. It is so pathetic.

I haven't personally experienced eye strain on my Air, but I did experience it when using my cMBP for very long periods of time (which I expect at that point). If anything, I find the Airs to be easier on the eyes than my cMBP.
I have Mountain Lion running on my 2011 13" Macbook Air. You can use the available HiDpi resolution. It is low at 720 x 450 but almost everything is super crisp and everything is large and easy to read. I use multiple desktops with only one window hogging each. Fullscreen helps too with making the most of the resolution.
Since 98% of my usage is browser-based, I set my minimum default text size within my browser (Firefox) to 16, which I find is perfect for my eyes. I also use reading glasses. No eyestrain here.
True Apple has some of the best scaling in the industry. But, I don't see it happening for 1080p. It will require a separate solution altogether. Plus 1400x900 is already pushing the limits of what proper scaling can do. And there is retina so I guess the problem has already been solved.
