It sounds like the eyetv is a PVR for your mac and not your TV. Having to encode it into h.264 first doesn't sound enticing at all.

I think I'll just buy an old windows machine and build it into a true PVR so I can just watch it on my TV without having to encode it to h.264.

It's :apple:TV's fault for not supporting MPEG2. And EyeTV makes it really really easy... it's just slow. :(

Or how about a Mac Mini? Or even a dedicated PVR that with USB access to the hard drive (they do exist, I believe). Anything but a PC, please!

Seriously, I've been on the lookout for a Windows PVR solution for my girlfriend's Dell for some time now. I picked up an Hauppauge WinTV USB thing, expecting it to be like EyeTV but for a PC. But it's not... it's horrible to the point of being unusable. From what I read at the time, there's nothing else out there that's any better.
