Also it keeps yelling at me. "7-1/2 hours until you wake up. 5-1/2 hours until you wake up."

You can turn off notifications, you know. I don't see the issue with auto-brightness, I never had problems with it being enabled while I use Flux.

The only gripe with f.lux for me is when I close my laptop and when I reopen it, weird colouring happens. But returns back to normal quickly. But still, that kind of bothers me. But other than that, my eyes are thanking the developers for f.lux.

I liked what I saw here about f.lux and decided to download it. But the page with the install directions listed a lot of warnings for use with El Capitan. Said you had to disable auto-brightness to avoid flashing. Said that occasional reboots may be required. Said to turn f.lux off before deleting any files or uninstalling any apps. Overall, enough warnings that I decided not to install it.

Too bad, as I was looking forward to trying it. Will wait until they offer a new version for El Capitan or Apples offers their own solution for OS-X.

you found the latest version? have been running it on el capitan since forever (well, since day one of 10.11), and no issues here (altho i don't use auto-brightness). make sure you DL the latest version.

The latest version (currently 36.6) can be dowloaded from here (it's the developer's website ): https://justgetflux.com/news/pages/mac/ and as several people here say it works really well in El Cap. The only thing you need to do is to disable the "Automatically adjust brightness" option in the display settings.

Automatic brightness is ON and i have no "fliashing".
The only thing I have is when computer goes out from sleep, it can take one second or 2 for Flux to reactivate - but then no flashing during use

Motivated by night shift on the iPhone, I just downloaded f.lux for my old macbook pro running El Capitan.

I can't decide if I like it yet. Certainly it seems to be easier on the eyes. When I switched back to regular mode, it felt very jarring to my eyes. Not sure if it helps sleep yet. I've had it only since yesterday evening.

However, if I want to watch a movie, then I have to disable it, or the colors in the movie look weird.

Do you use f.lux and what's your experience with it? I am especially curious if someone used it for a bit and then decided it's not working for them.

I use f.lux on both Windows and OS X and yes, if you're playing video the colours can get all "f.luxed up".

It has movie mode to temporarily disable, or you can manually disable for a bit if you're playing video.

That said, I do like it, it does help. You may need to tweak the colour temperature a bit to match your lighting, with my low-power fluro-incandescent bulb replacements its far too orange otherwise.

i've been running f.lux since forever, and it's running great on 10.11.4. can't see why it would affect battery life, it's a setting, not an active process.

first time u use it, it looks...odd. then, you realize, it's perfect. on a side note, great to see apple implementing this on ios 9.3 ("night shift"), so, am sure we'll see it as part of the OS on the mac (at some point).

Well, it IS a process but it doesn't do a lot, other than wake up occasionally and alter your colour profile.

I haven't noticed any impact to battery life.

I think the auto-brightness thing may be hardware dependent, i have noticed some odd things occasionally on my 2011 machine, my 2015 is fine.

Used it for several years. I had it installed on our old MacMini with SVGA monitor running Lion, my wife hated it and so did my youngest son. I hadn't initially adjusted the preferences for the 'At Night' to compensate for the monitor so it really did look pretty orange. My older son has it on his MacBook Pro on El Capitan and loves it, students being semi-nocternal and all that...
Have it running on my everyday MacBook Air on El Capitan, it really does help and has been a stable application.

What do you mean by adjusting for your monitor?

I've installed it on a MBP and ran it in the middle of the night and it was very orange. Adjusted the colour to little past candle.

Have not used it too much, need to install the app on my desktop as I tend to use that more.

If you have the colour temperature on your monitor already set to something "warm" f.lux will make it even warmer.

If it looks really orange maybe tweak the f.lux setting a bit, if you're running fluros or low power replacement bulbs then the ambient light in your house may be more white than what flux is configured for.

I tried f.lux on my 5k iMac.

Actually, I perceive the orange MORE strenuous to the eyes than the usual bluish tint of the screen.

Since I've slept very well so far, despite using the computer until late at night on most days, I cannot comment on the positive effects on sleep.

But the orange tint, even in reduced intensity, is more exhausting to my eyes than the normal color settings of the screen.

Weird.

A couple of things..

You need to perhaps adjust f.lux. if it is looking too orange, then it's not matching your ambient lighting colour temperature. It should look "warmer", but if its looking really very orange tinted, it's not adjusted right. I found the default colour temp to be too "warm", i have mine set to 4200K which is the approximate colour temp of fluorescent lighting, which is what i have at home. If you have incandescent bulbs, you may want it to be "warmer" (and that's the default).

Also, make sure you haven't started it up at night, because the effect happens gradually, if you go from full daytime colour to instantly set up for 9pm, the transition will be severe.
