Apple really wants you to know that F1: The Movie is now playing in theaters everywhere.

The company has promoted its Brad Pitt racing film with advertisements across at least six iPhone apps leading up to today's wide release, including the App Store, Apple Wallet, Apple Sports, Apple Podcasts, iTunes Store, and of course the Apple TV app.

While it is fair game for Apple to promote the film in most of those apps, many iPhone users were unhappy about Apple's Wallet app notification promoting a discounted ticket offer. As noted by Daring Fireball's John Gruber, Apple has effectively convinced us to move the contents of our physical wallets to the iPhone, and now Apple has turned around and used the app as an advertising mechanism without permission.

As for the Apple Sports app, Apple's services chief Eddy Cue said that the company created the app to "give sports fans what they want," with a focus on simplicity. The last thing that most sports fans want to see is even more ads.

Based on early box office results and positive reviews, it looks like F1: The Movie has the potential to be a summer blockbuster, and likely Apple's most successful film ever. Apple has a hit on its hands, but it has seemingly gone a step or two too far with pushing the film on its customers. Hopefully, this is not the new norm.

While Brad was out promoting it ... this was happening to his house
😞

A very good point made by John.

I'm coming back around on him this year it would seem.

Good news! If this hyperventilated bit of cinematic pablum isn't your speed (get it?), the Apple Marketing Menace™ can't wait to tell you about Ted Lasso, Season 4: The World's Most Magical And Amazing television show ever created.

One wonders if Ted is in a crowd somewhere in the movie..

Perhaps walking around with a Vision Pro on ...
Ya know ... "the future" 🙄

Personally, my policy is to block or uninstall any service which feeds me ads unprompted. And it worked. I wouldn't have even heard about F1 if not for the news despite using half a dozen Apple devices daily.

Of course, this is only because I had already disabled notifications on Wallet the first time Apple did any kind of promotion in the app. Don't even remember what it was, but Apple has been toying with this kind of thing for years now. This is just the first time it really got people's attention.

The ad was bad and dumb, but Gruber’s two posts about this, and two posts about the finder icon, just can’t be taken seriously by me anymore.
it all has a very 2010 Gizmodo feel to it, sour grapes that apple didn’t accept his invitation.
and I didn’t like the ad either, I don’t understand why the toggle to not get these promotions is exclusive to iOS 26, that’s all bad and understandable why people are upset. Apple absolutely should not be sending ads like this in the wallet app, completely agree on that point.
but writing two blog posts about this?

“Sending this ad is completely destructive to all the hard work other teams at Apple have done to make Apple Wallet actually private. I try very seldom to call for anyone to be fired, but I think whoever authorized this movie ad through Wallet push notifications ought to be canned.”

oh, please, Gruber just four months ago you would have been defending this to the high heavens.

“Especially in the field of computers, no company can be a slave to tradition and history. But you ought to respect it. This new Finder icon doesn’t.”

again, Gruber, if this would have been announced last year, you would be drooling all over yourself to say “ Apple changing the Finder icon is just proof that we’re moving into the next generation of computing” or some Apple approved PR spin like that.
it’s just completely transparent how, Apple didn’t take his criticism the way he wanted, they were admittedly a bit petty, so he’s going to… Do the same thing?
it just feels disingenuous, it doesn’t feel real. I highly doubt that grouper himself actually cares that much about the finder icon, or this ad.

They are just so excited about their new movie, they want you to share their excitement.
