I didn’t get the ad either, which at least reassures me Apple isn’t secretly targeting ads, as Apple DEFINITELY knows I’m into F1.

Maybe Apple Intelligence decided who to target?

People are always crying for discounts, coupons, freebies, etc.
Now Apple offers a $10 OFF discount for a Movie Ticket, and people crying and complain. If Apple didn’t, they would have complained about how greedy is Apple that don’t give their users a discount.

So they used the notification channel of the Apple Wallet app. They could have used the TV+ App, which not everyone has access to. Or the Apple Music app, but people would have complained that this is a Music App; also, not everybody uses it.
So the way to reach the most users is the Wallet app.

Please stop being crybabies; if you don’t want the discount just ignore it and trash it.

You lost me right here...

I'm pretty sure nobody would have been complaining and calling Apple "greedy" for not offering a discount to their F1 movie.

Nobody would have cared or even given a thought to "hey! why isn't Apple giving us a discount!".
(That's totally strange thinking)

This movie is going to fade into irrelevance very quickly.
It is getting MEGA PUMPED. Once the pump turns off, the hot air quickly escapes.

The complaint is that if any finance company with a card or pass in Apple Wallet had used the notification system to push an add they would have been in breach of the T&Cs that specifically prohibit this sort of misusing push notifications for adverts. It's intrusive and double standards ( and is the sort of thing that gets Apple investigated for anti-competitive practices by regulators, so it's doubly odd that they did it - though it seems to have been restricted to areas that don't have strong regulators...)

Totally agree, he was saying that apple not accepting his invitation was a 'Win' for him, but it wasn't and I think he knows that. While he may feel free to either express his real feelings or to now go at Apple, he's lost all credible no matter what.
it’s not just that, it’s also that he literally admits that the one single ad Apple has sent is annoying… And then writes multiple articles about it.
same with the Finder icon, Apple changes it, he writes an article how it’s bad, Apple changes it back and he writes an article about how it’s bad.
it’s just a blatant reversal of pretty much every opinion he’s ever held in the past, but he’s going to make sure everyone hears it because he’s going to publish the same stories over and over again.

but I feel like this would only get anywhere if other financial companies didn’t do the exact same things, which they do.
venmo sends me notifications for promos and ads every day, as does Uber, and all of my local retail stores. Amazon does the exact same thing.
so it’s clearly not in violation of the terms of service, or else pretty much every single company ever is violating it.
and by the way, I am not in favor of this at all, I thought the wallet ad was stupid.

I also got an Apple Music notification this morning that the F1 soundtrack is available. But Apple Music has been sending notifications since it launched.

Why is this movie 2.5 hrs long. That's too long watching cars go fast, interspersed with boring drama I won't care about

My physical wallet doesn’t feed me ads. Why the hell are they now appearing inside my digital one?
I mean, it probably kinda does if you get down to it. Any of your credit cards are advertising the network they run on. Any of your "punch cards", coupons, etc. are promotional items. Receipts often have ads on them or on the back. Tickets for events typically have coupons or other promotions on them. Even the wallet itself probably has a brand on it, effectively self-advertising.

Now you could say that's just stuff you put in your wallet, so it doesn't count. But your wallet was a one-time purchase and generally continues to function. A digital wallet requires some level of backend infrastructure to maintain. Apple Wallet, I'm sure, it's all negligible, and the argument could be made that they don't need to do ads to cover those expenses. However, let's say you had a third party wallet that was free but serves ads to maintain the backend.. are you more forgiving? If they can do it, why can't Apple?

Apple has done offers and promos in ads before. There have been Walgreens and other things show up. Maybe what people are up in arms about is that the "ad" was Apple advertising its own thing? Though, a Walgreens promo was still just advertising Apple Pay, an Apple product. Come to think of it, wasn't this a partnership with Fandango? Same thing?

I dunno.. I don't get it... and I happily saved $10.

At least Apple just didn't put a movie ticket directly in your wallet. We'd have another U2 incident on our hands!

every movie these days has to be at least 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours long, and every TV show, even the ones that advertise themselves as half hour comedies, all have to be at least 40 to 90 minutes an episode, if not two hours.
The days of a quick 90 minute movie or a quick 19-22 minute TV show episode are long gone.
I don’t get it, I thought attention spans were getting shorter?

This is really a stretch.

It’s a whole different deal on a digital device that can steal your attention when you don’t want it to.

There is a reason Apple are adding the opt-out toggle in iOS26, and why we have granular notifications settings.

These are not things users should be subjected to if they don't want to be.

I can't believe this is controversial to say.

To @surferfb's point earlier.

This is the sort of thing we would ROAST Samsung or Microsoft about.
Because Apple is doing it doesn't suddenly make it "ok".
