I finally rearranged my OS X layout after having the Dock up in the upper-right corner for a few years. I'm still getting used to the change, but when I'm in single-monitor mode, I feel like my new Dock placement is reminiscent of the old Apple menu.

I've also used those graphite Agua folder/iconset for the longest time, so this new one is a transition. I'm happy with the change so far, though.

I've seen others do it before, but how do you manage to get dashboard widgets to appear on the desktop all the time?

i'm not sure if others use a 3rd-part app, but this website gives instructions for how to do it using Terminal and some dragging and dropping:

First, open up Terminal (Applications --> Utilities --> Terminal) and type in the following, exactly as you see here:

defaults write com.apple.dashboard devmode YES

You can just copy and paste from this Web page if you're concerned that you might type in something incorrectly, of course.

You'll get another regular system prompt within Terminal if it works, there's no other output to the defaults program.

Now log out of your account by choosing Apple --> Log Out, and log in again (You need to restart Dashboard).

Ready for the fun now? Press f12 to bring Dashboard up, then drag one of your Dashboard widgets around. While you're still dragging it around (that's critical: keep that mouse button down!) press f12 again.

Poof! Your Dashboard vanishes, but the widget's still visible. Move it to where-ever you want on your screen and it's there, running, fully functional, without the rest of Dashboard around!

edit: Amnesty Widget Browser is a 3rd-party app lets you do it - there's a free trial and the full version is $20.

I actually use this handy-dandy little free widget to turn it off and on, though, as you duly noted, Terminal or AppleScript is just as easy. :)

Thanx! Can I assume that when I want to put it back, I just drag and open dashboard? Or is there another code I need?

Yeah, moving them back into Dashboard works the same way as moving them out of Dashboard. You can also close them from the desktop by holding the opt key while hovering over them.

Thanks for the shout out. IMHO, the main cool reason for using Amnesty Widget Browser (over the "dev mode" trick) is that you can do all sorts of extra things to widgets: decide on which level the widget resides, give a widget opacity (great for screen shots), scale and rotate a widget, etc...

Can I get that wallpaper from you? What size is it? Thanks so much!
