Cleardock is a good app to use. That is what i used on my old computer but so far have not changed my dock on this computer. It is very easy to use and as you wanted, it is free

Here's my current desktop for the iMac G4. I took it down at the local Marina... The wind chill was about 0 degrees.



(I just realized AppleWorks is in my dock. My mother must have recently put it there, seeing as she still doesn't like Pages after using AppleWorks - and before that, Clarris - since the early 1990s!)
