yes--more important to me is the fact that Face ID doesn't seem to work when in it sitting in my car cradle in landscape mode! not happy about that at all.

not at all--just hold the phone sideways and try to unlock it via Face ID. It doesn't work for me.

When lying sideways on your bed, just turn the phone vertical. It will work, even if your face is "sideways", in relation to the phone.

So if you're using Apple Maps in landscape mode while driving and your phone goes to sleep, how are you supposed to wake it up again without taking your hands off the wheel, say as you are approaching an exit?

I use Waze, so I don't know the answer to this. Your phone goes to sleep when using Apple Maps? What happened with pervious phones? Would you have to unlock them with Touch ID?

Apple Maps was just one example. My phone always sits in landscape mode in my car. Guess I will need to change my use of it. Very annoying, especially when it doesn't make sense why they don't allow it.

Maybe it's less of a case of not allowing it and more of a case of trying to get the software to allow it. With Waze there is a setting to prevent auto lock. Maybe the GPS apps need a setting to dim the screen if you're on the highway and there is no reason to alert you.

Its not that they dont want to allow it. Its that the hardware/software doesnt have the capability of scanning and verifying the face points unless its on straight up portrait mode.
If they could Im sure they would have enabled it and would gloat how it functions on either portrait and landscape orientation;)
Maybe on next years model.
It will be a perfect reason to upgrade for the updated and better FaceID detection:D
We all know how Apples works by now.

doesnt work when the phone is sitting on a flat surface either. i have it on my desk at work charging and it doesnt unlock unless i pick it up.

Eventually someone has answered this query that I had, this will effect a lot of people.

Really? I saw some reviews that said it did. I think Apple stated 10-20 degrees was about the max it could handle. Maybe you're too far away?

Maybe the laser array is in a vertical portrait orientation and can’t read your chin/forehead when the phone is turned. Seems like a square array would solve that.

not working in landscape is a strange thing to implement by design.

Probably not by design exactly, but more likely sensor-limited. Apple really needs to implement some of the Smart Unlock features that Samsung uses if they are going with a new or beta unlock mechanism.

Bad when the phone makes you change the way you want to use it.
