Assuming the sensor can work 360, I guess it would be a simple software update allowing a few FaceIDs like adding different fingers on touchID.

Maybe it's less of a case of not allowing it and more of a case of trying to get the software to allow it. With Waze there is a setting to prevent auto lock. Maybe the GPS apps need a setting to dim the screen if you're on the highway and there is no reason to alert you.
I use Apple maps and NAVIGON, pretty much interchangeably. Neither of them go to sleep while leading you somewhere.

Having to wake an iPhone while actively using a sat-nav isn’t an issue.

Unreal that you barely use Face ID in bed.
I’m in bed right now. I simply tilted my head a few degrees, and used the phone vertically. It unlocked immediately.

My head didn’t need to be parallel with the phone to work.

What about if the phone is orientation locked in portrait mode... can you unlock with FaceID if you and the phone are both laying sideways then?

Yes. I just woke up and I tried unlocking my iPhone multiple times while laying down and I had to raise my head to unlock it.

Even though I like face id, this is one of the reasons why I still prefer touch id. It's just easier to use your finger.

This may be the worst part of the X.
In bed, and it denies it. So have to enter passcode. I miss Touch ID.

Uhhhh... works totally fine for me in landscape. I tried it ten times. As soon as it unlocks, if it opens to safari, it opens in landscape. Doesn’t even rotate after it unlocks.

touch id is complete garbage compared to face id. damn it works so well and it's so fast. feels like it makes using the phone way more natural and fluent.

laying flat and being too close are the only 2 problems i've had with face id.

I thought it was supposed to work at an angle but I've found that not to be. Have to look right at it. you also can't be closer than an arms length from the phone.

In bed I had to pick it up and hold it out with my arm to get it to work

This is so weird because it works for me when I’m laying in bed with half my face all squashed by my pillow lol

Secure in bed. Who you in there with. Could always set always on in settings. Takes all of five seconds.

It does. Re-do your face scan and on the second pass put it on your desk or hold it at a similar height/angle.
Also can improve off angle recognition if you disable the attention function. Touch less secure but still more so than finger print ID.

Have to call “mostly” BS on this...

Shortly after setup of my new X...I tried FaceID while laying in multiple positions. No issues...period. With reading glasses on!

That’s what I want! Do you have attention aware off?
Same for me laying in bed head on pillow and it jumps open. Didn’t turn off attention aware.

Have you tried retracting face from lying position? Take like a minute.see how that works?

You do know Face ID won’t work in landscape position. Phone has to be in portrait position notch up top.

It works fine for me on my side if the iPhone is also on its side (lazy bed reading position).

Perhaps gravity distorts the OP’s face enough to cause a failure? I would try a rescan.

So if you're using Apple Maps in landscape mode while driving and your phone goes to sleep, how are you supposed to wake it up again without taking your hands off the wheel, say as you are approaching an exit?
If you’re using maps wouldn’t you turn off sleep mode???

No I don’t have it off, so weird that some people are experiencing this issue when mine works so well!

Obviously the phone has to be at an angle to match your face being horizontal but it works everytime for me.

I use my iPhone XR in landscape mode in the car. Navigation may work but if you ask Siri for Music you are required to login but you can’t do that if Face Id does not work in that mode.
