I didn't get touch id until 3 generations in, were there this many complaints about it too? Not being sarcastic, I was actually expecting much worse reaction by vocal people.

I don't know how some of you are so pleased with FaceID.
Mine recognizes my face 99.9% of the time WHEN IT TRIES to scan my face. The implementation sucks. Sometimes I just want to see my lock screen notifications - in this scenario it often just sits there locked without even trying to scan. Of course if I swipe up it'll unlock instantly. I hate this. 🙂

Personally when it comes to going to bed and being in the office I’m using stand up chargers and sometimes I use them to just sit there without charging. That way you never need to pick the phone up to activate the device.
I am quite happy with Face ID. It is a little slow and inconsistent, true, but I think it works fairly well in general. Especially for a first gen implementation. It would have been better to keep Touch ID too, whose current implementation was really good in my opinion. But well... cutting corners... A few years down the line we may have both again ---hopefully with Touch ID under the glass--- in the next Apple's "revolution". All for a measly 1500$.

I haven't figured out how to make notifications work the way they did on the 7. I realize that what the X is doing is more secure but it's a heck of a lot less convenient.

I was planning on using a wireless charger on my bedside table but I still have my Apple listening charger which stands up. Maybe I’ll get a new one as that one is rose gold and my X is white.

Anyone used the face unlock on the note 8 and the S8 and Face ID? Please tell me that Face ID is better. Otherwise I’ll just have to disable it and use passcode like an animal lol

Apple definitely has to make improvements to face id for the next iPhone.

I must be one of the few people that don't have issues with Face ID. To be honest, I love it! I personally wouldn't go back to Touch ID. The X recognizes my face in the dark, bright sun, with prescription glasses on/off. I really am amazed at how seamlessly it works. I have had numerous iPhones & Samsung phones in the past. I like them both for different reasons. The Samsung face scan is pure garbage and never worked for me. I think the thing that impresses me the most is that in complete darkness, the screen light gives my face enough light to unlock each time.

No, on my iPhone 7 I get notifications on the lock screen. With the X I have to unlock the phone.

Another advantage, possibly, vs. Samsung retina detection is that I don't think FaceID is blasting your eyes with IR radiation.

Thank you. That is how it's set. I may not be doing a good job explaining it, or maybe I haven't figured out how to get the X to respond correctly.
With the 7, if I click the side button it doesn't unlock but it shows all the notifications.
With the X, I get only message notifications unless I unlock And that's actually another frustration (not a big one, but it's there): you're obviously looking at the phone when you do this, and quite frequently the X unlocks, and if that happens I need to get notifications with the downswipe from the upper LH corner, which is generally a two-handed task. Because, yet another friction point, reachability does not work consistently (didn't on the TouchID phones, either, for me - YMMV).
None of this is deal-breaker stuff, just UI/UX annoyances. 🙂 And the 7 and previous weren't perfect, either. Going back and forth between the two, trying to figure out if I'm going to keep the X or wait until the iPhone XI, I realize that there are some parts of each that I really like, and some parts that are meh or worse. Fortunately it's not going to ruin life, it's just a phone!

When I use the "Always" setting, it definitely doesn't need to be unlocked to show the notification content on the lock screen. Each individual application has a "Show on Lock Screen" option under the Notification settings. Maybe the Messages app has this turned off? You should be able to configure any and all notifications to show on the lock screen without unlocking, this is working for me on the X. It does shunt some notifications into the "Older Notifications" list at some point and you need to swipe down to see those, but I am not sure what its criteria is for that.

What are you doing to see email and message notifications without unlocking and swiping into the notifications screen?
My settings for mail and messages are the same (just double-checked), so I don't understand why they come up differently on the phone... %-/

Face ID is more secure, so it can be used for more serious stuff like purchases or unlocking locked notes in various apps.
Also works in the dark and can’t be fooled as easily.

Not sure what I could be doing differently. See my setting and my lock screen below. It is still locked, and the full notification preview is showing for me for all the apps that I allow to show notifications on the lock screen.
Face ID should work perfectly in the dark. In bright light it will falter. I am very satisfied, however with Face ID. Now lets focus more on that awful notch.

My experience it's far quicker and works well. I have a wireless charging stand i use for work and at home for my bed and it works perfectly in most angles.
