Facebook Announces $12/Month 'Meta Verified' Subscription Service

*** the badge, gimme a “no ads” package for the same price and I might seriously consider it. Lately, I have a feeling that ads to content ratio on FB and Insta is at least 2:1

Besides, ID verification should be mandatory for all users IMHO. Perhaps an unpopular opinion but hear me out: marketplace. Every shmok seems to be running schemes under a false name, so if Meta is any serious about safety or security, verification of users is bare minimum that they should’ve started requiring ages ago.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg over the weekend announced the upcoming launch of a new "Meta Verified" subscription service that's designed for Facebook users, which will provide verification for $11.99 per month on the web or $14.99 per month on the iPhone or the iPad.

Zuckerberg described Meta Verified as a subscription that lets individuals verify an account with a government ID, get a blue badge, and get "extra impersonation protection" against accounts that are "claiming to be you." It also comes with "direct access to customer support, exclusive stickers, and a news release describing the feature says that it will include "access to increased visibility and reach." A full list of announced features:
  • A verified badge, confirming you're the real you and that your account has been authenticated with a government ID.
  • More protection from impersonation with proactive account monitoring for impersonators who might target people with growing online audiences.
  • Help when you need it with access to a real person for common account issues.
  • Increased visibility and reach with prominence in some areas of the platform- like search, comments and recommendations.
  • Exclusive features to express yourself in unique ways.
The service is "about increasing authenticity and security" across Meta services, and it follows Twitter Blue, Twitter's $8 per month subscription service that provides a blue checkmark and provides access to features like Edit Tweet.

Meta also plans to make the same verification process available on Instagram, but separate subscriptions will be required for each platform, so an individual or business that wants to be verified on both Facebook and Instagram will need to pay separate subscription fees.

Instagram and Facebook are monetized through advertising at the current time, but changes like Apple's App Tracking Transparency can make ads an unreliable revenue stream. Subscription payments will give Facebook a steady monthly income.

Meta Verified will roll out in Australia and New Zealand this week before it expands to additional countries. Meta says that as it tests and learns, there will be no changes to accounts on Instagram and Facebook that were already verified, but the meaning of the verified badge is "expanding."

Well, if FB can accurately athenticate users, then they should fund the upgrade from their ad revenue rather than attempt to so transparently double dip.

It seems like Meta stole Elon Musk’s subscription-based business idea. Oh well, what else can you expect? 🤦‍♀️

Instead of this Meta subscription service. Why not work on building an Instagram App for the iPad?
I would honestly be surprised if they were not trying to find a way to make a subscription since the *aaS garbage started.
I will gladly sign up for it at even twice the price if the subscription gave me back ownership of whatever data they may have collected on me… even if it has probably been scrapped to hell and back - and then only for so long as it takes me to nuke it all.
I also like how they think this “service” is on par with a streaming provider based on the price.
I give them credit for this: just when I thought they could not be any worse at reading a room, they find a way to plunge ever deeper.

They screamed and raged when Musk started it on Twitter. Then when things died down you get it on Facebook and Instagram…

Next up: TikTok…

🤣

wait...You're supposed to PAY THEM to give them your ID, so they can sell your verified personal data? Imagine how much they'll make off of verified government IDs! How gullible can people be?

This was to be expected because Meta have lost a large revenue stream due to Apple implementing services that prevent Meta from not only obtaining users personal data but also prevents/limits Meta's ability to advertise on Apple devices.

it would almost be worth it if one of the features had been the removal of ads from every third or fourth position in the feed - but its isn't

Who will continue to use Zuck-Apps? All of you!
Who will pay? All of you!
Because you are addicted.
Elon did the heavy lifting, the tech-flock will follow.
Just like when apple ditched the headphone jack. Samsung said never. Apple received contempt. Now all of them have followed the lead. And you ... you consumer ... you kept buying the stuff. As you will with Zuck-Apps.

I remember when I was using Facebook decade ago or so, there was a joke made up by some troll probably which spread all around the Facebook like wildfire, it said that Facebook will be soon introducing the "Facebook Gold" accounts.

10 years later, there it is. Only the name is different.

Oh, yeah, btw, anyone remember this (picture)?

People still use Facebook ? Pathetic.
I believe Facebook averaged almost 3 billion active users last year.

Remember back when people said that Apple needed "core" apps like Facebook, Netflix, Spotify and Google services more than they needed Apple? Seems like you really just need to go after their revenue streams, not their users.

Oh so the green eyed monster now wants us to pay them to do what they should have been doing all along anyway, by building integrity into the product, and they also want folks to willingly upload identification documentation so that they can officially link it with all the data they vacuum from the bowels of our souls.

Get stuffed Zuckerberg.

It’s odd huh; it’s still free because nobody has to verify anything.
